Metal limiter for plastic windows. Selecting and installing a window opening limiter. Floor Mounting Clamps

Plastic windows have long proven their practicality and functionality. One of their main advantages is ensuring tightness. However, this can also be considered a certain disadvantage, because the air in the room must be periodically renewed. So you have to open the windows for ventilation. In winter this is not very convenient, and at other times of the year too. To facilitate this task, the opening limiter of plastic windows is intended, which allows you to open the hinged sash only to a certain angle. This will achieve a normal level of ventilation in the room.

Purpose of the limiter

You can define the device in question. Plastic window limiter This is an element of fittings that allows you to install and fix the window sash in a certain open position. Structurally, this mechanism is a bar with slots, as well as a sash position lock. It allows you to change the position of the open window sash, usually within 1-10 cm. The strips that regulate the degree of opening of the sash are also called combs.

When such a device is installed on a window, the sash will not slam shut due to a draft and will not open completely due to a gust of wind.

Types of combs for windows

The comb for PVC windows may vary depending on the material of manufacture:

Window stops also differ in the installation method: under the sash handle and in the overlap (end) of the sash.

Handle combs

This limiter for opening a plastic window consists of a comb and a pin (clamp), which is secured under the window handle. The comb itself is mounted on a fixed frame. Depending on the design, the comb can be lowered or raised, taking up minimal space in the lowered position. This is the most convenient option. There are also combs that cannot be fully raised or lowered, pressed tightly to the frame. They are less convenient, as they constantly cling to the curtains and create obstacles near the window.

It is better to choose a metal lock for windows, since a plastic product can break very quickly. When choosing a clamp, you must ensure that its holes coincide with the holes for the screws in the handle.

Combs with fastening into the sash overlap

A sash lock of this type is not attached to the handle, but to the end of the sash. The comb itself is traditionally mounted on a fixed frame. The mounting location of such a limiter does not depend on the location of the handle. This makes it possible to place it anywhere. For example, sometimes there is some element of fittings just opposite the handle, so it is impossible to attach the latch under the handle.

The pin is fastened with a long self-tapping screw, which must pass through both internal jumpers of the sash overlap. Only in this case will the fastening be sufficiently reliable.

Important: This opening clamp for plastic windows cannot be installed on wooden sashes. The forces generated on the pin are such that they can damage the wood along its grain.

Setting the limiter

You can install a window stop at any time, including on plastic windows that have been in use for a long time. The design of the limiter provides for this. Especially such a simple mechanism as a comb.

Tools required for work

To ensure that the protection against opening or closing plastic windows is installed correctly, before installing the comb, you must prepare the following tools and materials for work:

  • limiter (comb) with pin;
  • marking tool (pencil);
  • drill with drills;
  • a “Cross” screwdriver or a screwdriver with a corresponding bit;
  • self-tapping screws up to 13 mm long. Longer screws cannot be used, as they can damage the window profile.

Tip: If you are installing a limiter in the overlap of a window sash, then additionally look for a self-tapping screw, the length of which would exceed the size of the latch by 3 cm. Having passed through the latch, the self-tapping screw will firmly fix it on the end of the sash.

Installation of a limiter with fastening under the handle

Installation of a limiter with fastening into the sash overlap

  1. The installation location of the limiter is pre-selected. Since the handle is not involved, the comb can be installed anywhere on the sash.
  2. A comb is screwed to the frame. For this, self-tapping screws up to 13 mm long are used.
  3. When the sash is in a closed position, mark with a pencil the position of the latch on the flap of the sash. The latch should be located exactly opposite the comb, but at the same time so as not to interfere with closing the window.
  4. A latch is screwed to the end of the sash (a hole is first drilled for it).
  5. The operation of the limiter is checked.

Disadvantages of combs compared to valves

The plastic window opening regulator, in addition to its undeniable advantages, is not without some disadvantages. They must be taken into account in the decision-making process for installing a limiter if there is a choice between them and inlet window valves:

  • This device is not a barrier for small children. It can be easily opened, after which access to the open window will be unlocked;
  • If the home is on the ground floor, intruders can take advantage of the opportunity to enter through a half-open window. The comb is easily removed from the clamp, and the window sash opens from the outside;
  • If you forget about the slightly open window in the cold season, then there is a high probability of overcooling the room;
  • When attaching the sash to the clamp, the noise-proof properties of the plastic window will not be ensured;

Compared to combs, window supply valves do not have these disadvantages. Fresh air enters in moderate quantities, and the window itself remains closed.

If you decide to install a sash opening limiter on your window, then follow the recommendations listed above and take into account all the installation nuances. In this case, the stopper will serve you well for a long time, and you will not be disappointed.

To prevent the door from slamming or opening/closing spontaneously, so that it can be fixed at any angle, there is a door opening limiter. There are many types of limiters. They differ from each other structurally, in location, in design. You can choose an element that will match the rest of the door fittings.

Varieties

1. The simplest floor door stop is a wedge with a non-slip base. Designed to limit the door so that it does not open wider than necessary.

2. Another floor stopper is placed on the door at the bottom. It is equipped with non-slip feet that rest on the floor. When opened, the door is released from the groove and set in motion.

3. Magnetic door stop. It consists of a clamp with a magnet located on the floor and a counter plate on the canvas. When opened, the parts connect and hold the door in a certain position.

4. Wall-mounted door stop (swing stop) - an element that is installed on screws in the place on the wall where the door should stop swinging. When opened, the door rests against it and does not hit the wall. This door opening limiter can be conventional or magnetic.

5. A clamp that is attached to the platband at the top of the box. When turning down at a right angle, an obstacle is installed to prevent the door from slamming. To avoid damaging the canvas, wall stops are equipped with rubber gaskets or made of soft materials.

6. A C-shaped plastic clamp is placed on the end of the leaf and thereby prevents the door from slamming.

7. Opening angle limiter. A metal device that is installed on the door. The brake pad is equipped with a pedal. The pedal is pressed to fix the blade. To set it in motion, the block is raised using a lever.

8. Latch limiters. Inside apartments they are most often used in bathrooms and kitchens. Usually this is a tongue, which, when fixed, fits into the corresponding groove of the strike plate. There are also magnetic varieties.

9. Entrance door latches. When installed, the door cannot be opened from the outside with a key. Magnetic latches prevent the door from slamming shut when you enter the stairwell.

The choice of door opening limiter is determined by the intended purpose, ease of use, design and features of the room (for example, if the apartment has a heated floor or expensive flooring, preference is given to wall clamps).

Window sash opening limiter (aka “comb”, aka “crocodile”)- window ventilator. It consists of two parts - a comb (a small bar with indentations) and a retainer. The clamp is attached to the movable window sash, and the comb itself is fixed to the frame. Please note that the window comb simply secures, but does not lock, the window.

Combs are used for controlled ventilation of rooms on rotary PVC or wooden windows. They provide the ability to fix the sash in 2 planes: vertical and horizontal.

You can buy a window comb in our store in white or brown.

Does the door constantly hit walls and furniture or slam shut at the most inopportune moment? Install a door opener and solve this problem once and for all. In this article I will look at the most popular product options and tell you how to install them correctly.

Types of products and their features

I will talk about three product options:

  • Floor opening limiters;
  • Wall products;
  • Over-the-door options.

Floor type limiters

This is the most common and popular option and has several advantages:

  • Huge variety. There are a lot of design options, they can have different sizes, colors, etc. This allows you to choose the optimal solution for any interior;

  • Versatility. The floor-mounted door opening limiter can be installed both indoors and outdoors. You can install an element that will limit the opening of the front door;
  • Low cost. The price of such products starts from 40 rubles. It's much cheaper than any other option. At the same time, even cheap options do an excellent job of their functions;

  • Easy to install. The floor is always strong, so attaching a stopper to it is not difficult. The limiter is always supplied with fasteners, which further simplifies and speeds up the work process.

Types of products:

Illustration Description of the option

Compact fasteners. They usually have a height of 5-7 cm, take up little space and are installed near the wall. The design can be different: from a cylinder with a rubber ring to a ball. They are made of metal and can have different coatings to match the color of the door hardware.

Flat Side Stoppers. Their main difference is the presence of a flat rubber spacer, which cushions the door leaf and prevents damage.

When installing this option, it is very important to position it at the correct angle so that the plane of the door lies flat against the latch.

Magnetic limiter. This option allows you to lock the doors in the open position. There is a magnet on the stopper itself, and a metal counterpart is attached to the door leaf, which is attracted and securely fixed in the desired position.

Cork products. A cork door stop is cheap and does not damage the door when impacted. Another important advantage is that if the working part wears out, it can be quickly replaced by removing it from the bracket and installing a new one.

Lockable limiter. Used if you need to limit the door opening angle. If necessary, the lock can be easily removed after unlocking the lock.

Mobile door lock. Such products can have a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They are placed on the floor only if necessary and fix the door leaf due to the wedge-shaped working part.

The main advantage of this option is its simplicity and convenience; you do not need to drill holes to secure the product, it is simply placed on the floor in the required place.

Spring retainer. It is a steel plate with two anti-slip stops. It is placed under the canvas and securely fixes it in a certain position.

A very simple solution for cases when the door needs to be fixed not constantly, but from time to time.

Burglary stops. This option is used not as a limiter, but as a means of protection against penetration into the house. The system is a battery-powered stop.

When the blade is pressed against the metal platform, the device makes a very loud sound. Thanks to its wedge-shaped design, it also serves as a stop, preventing the door from opening wide.

Installation instructions for floor options look like this:

Illustration Description of the stage

The door must be installed in its place. It is not worth working without a door leaf, as it will be difficult to set all the required distances.

The desired door position is set. To prevent the canvas from hitting the wall or furniture, it is necessary that the handle does not reach the surface by at least 1 cm. I usually set it with my finger, this is just the right distance from the surface.

Draw a line along the bottom edge of the canvas with a pencil. The door is held in the desired position. The line will help determine the location of the stop part of the latch and will tell you the angle of rotation of the plane if you have a version with a smooth edge.

Mark the drilling point for the protrusion on the stop. To do this, it is placed in the required place at the desired angle. To make precise markings, you can cut a template out of paper, or you can apply chalk or another compound to the end of the pin, which will leave a mark on the floor.

A hole is being drilled. The diameter of the drill should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the pin on the clamp. Typically the 5.5-5.8 mm option is used. The depth is no less than the length of the protruding part.

The emphasis is set to the desired position. The pin is inserted into the hole, after which it is worth checking whether the latch is positioned correctly, whether the handle is not hitting the walls or furniture, and whether the stop fits well to the surface.

Mark the location for drilling the hole for the dowel. A point is drawn with a pencil, after which the latch is removed, and a hole for the dowel is drilled in the right place.

Most often, fasteners with a diameter of 6 or 8 mm and a length of 30-40 mm are used. The drilling depth should be 5 mm greater than the length of the chop.

The emphasis is finally fixed. First, the dowel is inserted, then the stop is placed. The structure is fixed with a self-tapping screw, which is included in the kit. After this, you can use the door without fear of damaging the walls.

If you have a magnetic lock, then in addition to all the work described above, you will need to secure the counter part to the door leaf. Here it is important to accurately determine the position of the element, and then simply tighten two small screws.

Wall stops

Door stops of this type have the following features:

  • The main unit is mounted on the wall. This is very convenient for those rooms where it is not possible to fix the limiter in the floor. This option is also great if you don’t want to spoil your expensive flooring;

  • Wide range of options. You can choose a retainer to suit any design style. The designs also differ in length; it can range from 50 to 150 mm. It all depends on the position in which the door leaf should stop;
  • High requirements for foundation strength. If the door opens abruptly, very high loads will be placed on the limiter. Therefore, it is extremely undesirable to fix the structure, since you can simply break through the wall;

The cost of such limiters starts from 150 rubles. This is not much, but floor-standing options are still much cheaper.

Let's look at the main types of products:

Illustration Product Description

Standard wall stop. It is a rigid bracket, on one side of which there is a shock-absorbing rubber spacer, and on the other - a fastening unit for 3 self-tapping screws. The design is simple and very reliable.

Limiter with magnetic lock. Used if you need to fix the door in the open position. In addition to the bracket itself, the kit includes a counter part that is attached to the door.

Stopper for door handle. Often, when installing interior doors, there is simply nowhere to put the stopper, and over time, marks from the rubber part of the striker remain on the door leaf. In this case, a limiter that is mounted on the wall opposite the handle is perfect.

Wall stop with latch. This option is a clamp with a spring that is attached to the bottom of the wall.

A plate with a protrusion is attached to the lower end of the door leaf, to which the latch clings. This type of product is suitable where you need to securely fix the door in the open position.

There is no point in disassembling the installation process, since it is similar to the option described above. The only difference is that the structure needs to be fastened not to the floor, but to the wall. And remember that if you have a plasterboard finish, then you need to either additionally strengthen the frame in a certain place at the stage of constructing the supporting system, or attach it to the base under external materials.

Over-door clamps

This type of product has the following features:

  • Fastening is carried out on the door leaf. You don't need to drill into the walls or floors as the unit locks onto the door. There are options that do not require fastening at all; they are designed to prevent the door from slamming;

  • Easy to install. You can fasten it to the door with self-tapping screws without a drill or drill bit, you can even get by with a screwdriver, 2-3 fasteners can be tightened by hand;
  • Variety of options. You can choose different solutions depending on your goals and means. Below is an overview listing the most common types of products.

Product types

Illustration Description

Hinged latches. These are stops with a rubber spacer that can be folded back due to a spring mechanism.

A very convenient option for places where doors need to be fixed from time to time.

The length can be different, so you can choose an option for both rooms and entrance systems.

Tape stop. The simplest and cheapest option, which is a piece of durable tape made of synthetic materials, onto which fastening units are sewn on both sides. Great for cottages and other rooms where appearance is not particularly important.

Retractable clamp. This option is mounted on the bottom of the door and is a brake pad that is lowered by pressing your foot.

The stop can be raised just as easily by pressing the plate from the side. Very convenient design that takes up very little space.

Sliding stop. It is attached to the leaf and door frame and determines the maximum opening of the door.

With it you can set any angle, which is very convenient. In the fully open position, the blade is fixed by a notch in the groove.

Soft limiters. Used to prevent the door from slamming. They are especially useful in children's rooms, where it is important to prevent the child's fingers from getting caught in the door leaf.

These products are very easy to use: just put them on the door approximately in the middle of the leaf, as shown in the photo.

The installation process depends on the type of limiter you are using. The main steps are always the same:

  • Marking the locations of elements;
  • Drilling holes for fasteners;
  • Fixation of the structure;
  • Checking the system operation.

Remember that the use of over-door stops creates a large load on the door leaf. Therefore, they are not suitable for flimsy doors made of MDF or fiberboard; the structure must have good rigidity.

Conclusion

I’m sure you can easily choose a door stop and install it yourself. The video in this article will help you understand some of the nuances of the topic even better, and if something is unclear, ask in the comments.

Today, plastic windows are installed almost everywhere. They are durable, functional, and provide reliable heat and sound insulation. Window stops allow you to increase the comfort of PVC double-glazed windows, while simultaneously making them safe for children and pets.

Peculiarities

A window stop is a design that allows you to open a window slightly, leaving a small gap and fixing the window sash in a given position. The device received the name “comb” for its external resemblance to a comb. It has several grooves. A rod can be placed in any of them, which allows you to hold the slightly open window in one position, and prevent household members and pets from getting too close to the window opening.

The comb is installed on turning windows, that is, on those where the sash opens exclusively in the horizontal direction. In essence, the limiter allows, if necessary, to open the sash like a window. However, nothing prevents you from installing a comb on windows with a tilt-and-turn mechanism. Its use will reduce the gap formed when the sash opens in the vertical direction.

The design consists of a strip with slots and a window sash position lock (rod). The strip is mounted to the frame, the clamp is installed in the window sash. By installing the latch in one or another groove, it is possible to open the window within 1-10 cm. The opening angle depends on the length of the strip with grooves and the number of them.

The more grooves the strip has, the more precise adjustment of the sash position can be achieved. The standard plank is 10-12 cm in size with 4 grooves.

Manufacturers of limiters usually indicate 2 main functions of the comb:

  • ventilation premises (especially relevant for windows that do not have supply valves, sashes that open exclusively horizontally);
  • protection double-glazed windows from damage due to sudden slamming of the sash due to a draft or strong wind.

Ensuring the safety of children and pets is another advantage of the limiter.

By adjusting the position of the comb, the user has the opportunity to open the sash wider or narrower. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve an optimal microclimate in the room, prevent the formation of condensation on the plastic double-glazed window, without overcooling the room.

You can leave the window in this position even for the whole day (which is especially important in the warm season). By opening the window literally 5-15 cm and using a limiter, you will ensure optimal air circulation in the room. However, it is important to understand that the comb only fixes the window, but in no case is a locking device. Residents of the first floors should not leave their windows open and secured with limiters when leaving the house.

In addition to the obvious advantages, the design also has disadvantages, which are best learned about before purchasing and installing the comb. Installation of the device requires the presence of additional perforations in the profile, which slightly reduces the thermal insulation properties of the glass unit. The sound insulation coefficient is also reduced by 2-3 dB. Finally, the presence of holes leads to a decrease in the strength of the profile and possible violations of the geometry.

If we compare supply valves with limiters, then the latter, of course, are inferior to them in terms of safety and functionality. The operation of double-glazed windows with valves is more convenient, but such products are more expensive.

Kinds

The limiting elements may differ in the number of grooves. Standard models have 4 slots, but there are also options with 5 slots. In addition, there are several types of combs.

Outdoor

Designed for folding window sashes (for example, vents). It has 3-4 grooves, fixes the sash while ventilating the room.

Built-in

Invisible to the eye analogue of the external comb. In terms of its functioning and number of grooves, this option is identical to the one described above. The difference is the greater aesthetics of the window, since the built-in limiter is invisible.

Constant brake

Perhaps such a name will seem unknown to many, although, perhaps, everyone has come across such mechanisms for sashes. A permanent brake is usually installed on the doors of shops and offices. All a person needs to do is pull the door towards him and open it. No need to close. Thanks to the built-in mechanism, the door will close smoothly automatically.

A similar system is mounted on a window, preventing the sash from spontaneously closing or swinging open excessively. Such a mechanism should not be pulled by force when trying to cover the window, as it may break.

Cable limiter

Structurally, it consists of 2 elements, one of which is fixed on the frame, and the second on the profile. They are connected to each other by a metal-based cable (sometimes in a plastic braid). There are models where the cable is replaced with a thin chain. The micro-ventilation function is realized thanks to the short (up to 20 cm) length of the cable.

Unlike a standard comb, it does not allow you to fix the sash, but only holds it, preventing further opening of the window. At the same time, the cable stop is stronger than the comb and can withstand a breaking force of up to 550 kg (depending on the model).

For protection against children and unauthorized entry from the outside, a cable stopper is more suitable than a comb. For ventilation it is better to choose the latter.

When installed on swing sashes, the limiter can be mounted anywhere in the profile and frame; when mounted on tilt-and-turn structures, only in the upper part.

Handle-lock

This is the most effective limiter that provides protection against children opening the window. It is a metal handle with shut-off valves. There is a lock on its outer part. Opening is done with a key.

Using the key, you can securely close the sash or give it a folding position. In appearance, such designs are indistinguishable from ordinary handles. The inconvenience is the need to keep the key safe. To do this, find a place inaccessible to children. The use of a key also includes overhead and mortise locks installed on a double-glazed window, as well as a stopper and blockers for sliding windows.

Depending on the material used, there are also several types of combs.

Plastic

This is the most accessible type. It can have several color finishes and goes well with PVC structures. The base is ABS (impact-resistant) plastic. The standard number of grooves is 3-4.

The disadvantages include the lowest strength indicator and, accordingly, a shorter service life. It is not recommended to install such products on windows facing the windy side, since under heavy loads they can become deformed and burst.

Metal

Metal combs are stronger and more durable, and therefore have a higher cost. It is important to note that the metal of the product must have anti-corrosion protection. The best material for making the structure is considered to be brass. To protect it from corrosion, a zinc layer is required. Typically such products have 4-5 teeth. The color range is very wide (copper, gold, silver, gray shades).

Combined

Such a device includes 2 materials at once - plastic and metal. As a rule, the latter serves as the basis for the retainer, while the comb is made of plastic. The number of teeth can vary from 3 to 5. White products of this type are most often produced. Sometimes you can find brown combs designed for windows with a wood profile. Colored options are usually made to order.

Depending on the type of installation, there are limiters mounted under the sash handle, as well as analogues installed at the end of the window sash.

How to choose?

You can purchase products in specialized stores, departments of household accessories, as well as from specialists involved in the production and installation of windows. It is better to give preference to designs made of durable materials with simple shapes. This will increase the durability of the limiter and reduce the risk of its individual elements breaking off.

It is important that the limiter matches the design features of the double-glazed window and operating conditions.

For example, it is better to install activated brake mechanisms on balcony doors. For large windows, as well as attic double-glazed windows that open upward, you should choose only high-strength metal stops.

If you plan to actively use the double-glazed window and frequently open/close it, it is better to give preference to a mechanism with a lock and key rather than a conventional comb. Then the device will last longer.

The cost of products ranges from 100-500 rubles. It depends on the material of manufacture, manufacturer, number of grooves. The most affordable are plastic models, the more expensive are metal and combined. Also, combs with more grooves usually have a higher price.

How to install?

Installing the comb will take literally 5 minutes. The process does not require professional skills; all the work can be done with your own hands. You will need the following tools and materials:

  • directly the window stop, the kit of which includes the comb itself, the clamp and brackets;
  • self-tapping screws, which are usually also included in the kit (you can select them yourself, the main thing is not to take fasteners whose length is more than 12 mm, otherwise it will damage the profile);
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • a knife (construction knife or regular kitchen knife), with which you will need to pick up the plug;
  • pencil or washable marker for marking;
  • drill.

You can install a limiter in several stages.

  • After preparing everything you need for work, drill several holes in the window using a drill. With this tool you will get perforations without damaging the plastic of the profile. If you neglect this stage and try to screw in the screws right away, you will not be able to avoid cracking of the profile material.
  • Turn the plug at a right angle. To do this, find a special groove on its surface, pick it up with a knife and turn it 90 degrees. Once the procedure is completed, 2 bolts will be found under the plug. They need to be unscrewed.
  • Remember what position the window handle is in, then remove it. To avoid confusion, giving the handle the same position as when the window is open will help, that is, the handle should be perpendicular to the vertical of the window.

  • Place the stop bracket in the profile space so that it will later be under the window handle. Perforations for screws should be visible in the holes of the bracket. After this, the handle is installed on the bracket, that is, it returns to its original place.
  • Take the latch and align it with the axis of the bracket (it should fit into the grooves correctly). Having determined the optimal position of the latch, you should make the appropriate marks on the profile.
  • In the marked places, use a drill with a thin gimlet to make 2 holes. Then you can attach the limiter using self-tapping screws. After this, the installation is considered complete.

The installation of the latch at the end of the sash is carried out somewhat differently. This type of installation allows the comb to be located anywhere in the fixed part of the frame. To attach the latch, you should use a long self-tapping screw so that it can pierce both internal jumpers of the end part of the sash (it is also called overlay). Only in this case can you count on the reliability of the fastening. As with the previous method, it is important to pre-drill holes for the screws and then screw the fasteners into them.

Installing a stopper at the end of the sash is usually an alternative option. They resort to it if there is fittings under the window handle or opposite it, due to which it is impossible to secure the latch.

It is important to note that the window stop installed in the sash overlap can only be used for plastic windows. Its use in a wooden profile threatens to crack the wood in the direction of its grain.

With this installation method, the risks of breaking the tightness of the double-glazed window and deforming the frame are minimized.

Manufacturers

  • Among manufacturers of window limiters, the products enjoy the trust of buyers Penkid. These are steel cable restraints, the strength characteristics of which are admirable - they can withstand pressure up to 550 kg. They cannot be broken, cut with a knife or cut with pliers. The cable length is 200 mm.
  • Roto limiters demonstrate unsurpassed German quality. The manufacturer gives a 10-year warranty for some of them. Plastic restraints of this brand are completely safe from an environmental point of view, and metal ones have multi-layer protection against corrosion.
  • Fittings from another German brand are characterized by high reliability. Reha u.
