In 1936, Friedrich Grohe acquired the brass manufacturing company Berkenhoff & Paschedag, founded in 1911 in the German city of Hemer. In those days, bathrooms were very modest in size and were a luxury that only the wealthiest people could afford. Friedrich Grohe's company produced products according to German standards and only in 1938 received its first export order for bathroom fittings.

Due to martial law and the rationing system for the distribution of goods in the early forties, the bathroom remained strictly functional room for washing, and there was no need to think about any luxury or comfort.
