Which electric impact drill is better? Characteristics of impact drills, models. What types of drills are there?

Choosing a drill is difficult: there are many types, a lot of features, a sea of technical characteristics. If you don’t want to waste your money, you’ll have to delve into all this. I’m sure we can handle it together, since we’ve already developed some consumer tricks.

How the drill was hardened

Any master will tell you that a drill is the most important tool. Even those construction specialists who (seemingly) do not use it do not argue with this, although in fact some mixers, electric screwdrivers, and screwdrivers are called drills by many manufacturers. Even hammer drills can easily be considered direct relatives of machines for drilling holes. Hand drills powered by muscle power (at least their real prototypes) have been known since the Renaissance, and the simplest devices for drilling work have been used for several thousand years and take pride of place in many archaeological museums around the world.

It was possible to mechanize, or rather, electrify the process (steam drives already existed) at the end of the 19th century, then more or less compact electric motors appeared, which once again turned the world upside down. In 1889, Arthur James Arnot (a future employee of Black & Decker) from Melbourne for the first time transferred electrical energy to a drill; the task was to optimize the process of drilling stone and coal - the industrial version, so to speak. In 1895, brothers Karl and Wilhelm Fein from Stuttgart distinguished themselves. They managed to create a drill that you can hold in your hands - a construction and household option. Two years later, AEG released the first production machine, similar to its modern counterparts. Further, almost nothing fundamentally changed, work was carried out only to improve the drill - ergonomics, performance, safety, additional functions.

The first electric drill from Fine, 1895.

Now, probably every man has a drill, well, at least almost all of us have thought about purchasing one at least once. This is the best-selling instrument in any country in the world. Popular recognition is not at all accidental. The drill allows you to drill a variety of materials, drill with impact, screw fasteners, clean and grind surfaces, mix heterogeneous solutions, and cut threads. Some manufacturers offer a lot of special attachments that make it possible to use the drill as a jigsaw, milling cutter, plane... The usefulness of such functionality is very controversial, but there is the possibility itself, and it’s warming.

If earlier in our country you had to “get out” a drill, now you just need to go to any specialized store or market, and you will be presented with a simply huge assortment. There are so many models and entire classes that not only those who like to make things at home, but also seasoned craftsmen can get confused in the instrumental diversity - demand creates supply. Our common task is to understand all the nuances of electric drills and make the selection process as informed and comfortable as possible.

What is a household drill

Many people wonder about the “professional suitability” of a household tool. What kind of cars are these that are several times cheaper than their older brothers? What is the difference? What are they for? Why do companies with almost space-age technologies make simplified versions of their products? Everything is extremely simple: not everyone needs a drill to work with it around the clock, there are people who have it peacefully resting in their closet/garage until they urgently need to hang a picture or repair a stool. Hobby class machines were created for the home craftsman. Cheap Chinese brands and outright fakes should not be included here - they are often unsuitable for work and unsafe. And, on the contrary, domestic units (some specialists indiscriminately classify them as household ones) are also not from this series - they are quite competitive for commercial use. The amateur class is a special line of tools or products of individual divisions of reputable global companies that are ready and able to make a special offer to a special consumer (in terms of “price/quality/functionality”).

It may seem that companies are “stifling” professional copies, but this is not entirely true, they create completely different machines. The main feature of a household drill is that they can be used for no more than 4 hours a day, according to the “one to one” scheme (we work for fifteen/twenty minutes, rest for the same amount). Why is that? A simple design, less resistant materials, and weaker engines are usually used here. Professional drills have more powerful motors, wear-resistant parts, and better protection from aggressive influences (dust, moisture, vibration). What do the developers of a household drill give us in return, besides a favorable price:

  1. Expanded functionality - as an illustration, an impact tool, and even with reverse (drill, drill, screw), for example, let's take the Bosch PSB 500 RE. Professional machines have a much narrower specialization.
  2. Good ergonomics. We are lightweight due to the use of less powerful motors, the absence of a metal gearbox casing, and lightweight parts. The case is replete with soft inserts and pads. The machine is equipped with a quick-release chuck. Original product design (Black&Decker KR753).
  3. Protection from inexperienced users. Power performance is limited and operator safety is improved.
  4. Wide range of equipment. In the suitcase you can find a set of drills, a spare cartridge, and a bit holder.
  5. Long warranty period. Some manufacturers offer 2 years, instead of one, as for professional models.

Next, we will remember more than once about the division of drills into “pro/hobby”, but for now let’s summarize what has been said. A household tool definitely has a right to exist; it will cope with all tasks perfectly, provided that the loads are moderate. The commercial or amateur purpose of a particular drill is always indicated in the passport. Another trouble-free feature is the continuous operation time of a professional drill (at least 45 minutes), and it must also withstand a work shift of at least 7-8 hours.

Special purpose drills

A drill is a multifunctional tool in principle, but in order to comfortably perform specific tasks, some models have a special design and a set of unique characteristics. Let's take a closer look at them.

Hammer drill

A hammer drill can help drill into lightweight concrete or brickwork; for working on soft materials, the function is disabled. Let's say right away that this is not a hammer drill: the impact power here is tens of times less (joules are not even indicated in the manual) and the operating principle of the striking mechanism is different. In an impact drill, the main work is done by a ratchet, which consists of toothed couplings, which are disconnected under load (one of them slides off the other) and the shaft moves forward.

In a hammer drill, the impact is obtained from the work of a special “drunk” bearing and pneumatic elements. If the drilling function for a rotary hammer is the main one, then for a drill the impact mode is just an auxiliary function. Firstly, it can only take light concrete and brick, and, secondly, such a mechanism only lasts for a very short time, and thirdly, other parameters of the tool suffer a little (the weight increases, there are spindle plays, the accuracy of hammerless drilling deteriorates).

The impact force of the drill and its resource directly depends on the pressure applied by the tool, on the strength and geometric characteristics of the gears, on the location of the ratchet (the farther from the chuck, the weaker the drilling).

So, an impact drill is a good solution for rare drilling jobs “10 minutes a year”, an amateur option. These units will in no way be able to replace a rotary hammer, and you will have to pay for the well-known versatility by reducing some standard characteristics. There are no rules without exceptions; impact drills can also be found in professional lines (Bosch GSB 16 RE, Makita HP2071).

Drill for screwing fasteners

Working with fasteners is one of the most important functions of a drill; you can clamp a bit into the chuck of any of them and twist the screws, but some machines are better suited for this than others:

  1. The presence of reverse is a very important point, since the screws periodically have to be unscrewed during operation; fortunately, this function is available in almost all modern drills.
  2. Variable speed. It is impossible to work with self-tapping screws at high speed - you need to go down. There are preset options, a sensitive button, and a multi-position gearbox (several speeds) are used.
  3. Pulse mode (short-term shocks). It is good for dismantling consumables.
  4. A removable chuck sometimes allows the bit shank to be installed directly into the spindle (Kress 650 BS). The dimensions of the machine are reduced, its weight is reduced.
  5. Adjustment of tightening force. This function is considered very specific; it is typical for a tool that is classified into a special class (screwdriver). Read more about cordless screwdrivers in the article “How to choose a cordless screwdriver”.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning drills and screwdrivers with automatic cassette feeding of screws, a very convenient device for large-scale fastening work (for example, Makita 6844).

Drill mixer

Many drills (not to mention “clean” mixers with a whisk chuck) with a power of 1000 watts or more are capable of mixing viscous solutions. For such work, they are often equipped with elongated additional and D-shaped main handles (Makita 6300-4). In addition to this, powerful drills have a multi-speed gearbox that allows you to reduce gears with increasing torque (Bosch GRW 11 E). The high power of such machines and the presence of several protection systems make it possible to install large equipment in them: large-diameter drills, crowns (including for diamond drilling). Many of these drills have a breakaway clutch that protects the worker and the machine from damage if it jams (Makita DBM080).

Bosch GRW 11E

Angle drill

Typically these are lightweight, compact machines designed to work in hard-to-reach places. They are equipped with an angular gearbox, so the spindle and equipment are located at a right angle to the body axis (as in an angle grinder), for example, Makita DA3011F. Otherwise, an angle drill does not have any special differences, well, except that their power is generally low and there cannot be an impact function. A real alternative to a highly specialized angle drill are angle attachments for standard models, which allow you to solve special problems.

Choosing the right drill

Power characteristics

On average, the power of drills is in the range of 500-900 watts; stronger machines also exist, but their specialty is very large drilling or mixing viscous solutions (Metabo B32/3 - 1.8 kW). We always mention that excess motor power affects the dimensions and weight of the product, but in the case of a drill, these points are not so critical, unless, of course, it is purchased as a screwdriver. Only a sufficiently powerful power plant will be able to provide the necessary torque, the reserve of which is simply necessary for drilling large and deep holes, for frequent manipulations with durable materials.

Spindle speed. The data sheets indicate the nominal no-load speed; the higher it is, the cleaner the hole and the more capabilities a low-power tool has (this scheme is often used in household models). It also makes sense to select a high speed for an impact drill, and if the device will be periodically used for grinding/polishing. For work with fasteners, a high rotation speed is not needed (400-500 rpm will be fine), so you should definitely check the functionality of the speed controllers.

The power/frequency/torque indicators are tightly interconnected: when one of them changes, the others inevitably change - you need to choose as a whole. Better yet, concentrate on the maximum tool diameters for various materials; these characteristics speak much more eloquently about the tool.

Design features and auxiliary systems of drills

Reverse makes it possible to unscrew fasteners and free stuck equipment. By using a flag, a through button or turning the brush block 90° (Metabo UHE 2850) relative to the commutator (allows you to save power during reverse movement), the activation of the electric motor is changed. A good reverse is located at hand and can be easily transferred to various positions, but it is even better if it is connected to the start button, so that there is no possibility of switching while the engine is running. Ideal reverse provides equal rotational force in both directions (usually the twisting motion is much weaker).

Multi-position gearbox designed to downshift and increase torque. The first speed is low frequency and high torque, the second/third speed is high frequency and low torque. Obviously, machines with this design are much more functional than others, since the output power does not change when changing speeds (Makita HP 2070).

Characteristics of the cartridge. There are essentially two types of chucks: key chucks and keyless chucks. The first type for changing equipment will require the use of a special key, but it is not unreasonably considered more reliable, therefore it is used for powerful devices and impact drills.

Keyless chucks (KLC) are operated only by hand; no additional tools are needed. A quick-release chuck with one clutch is tightened with one hand, this can be done even with gloves, and is used only with a spindle locking mechanism (button or automatically), for example, as in the Kress 850 SB-2 model. The two-sleeve cartridge must be twisted with both hands. BZP is a very convenient thing (you don’t have to constantly look for the elusive key and wind it to the cord, your hands don’t get injured on the corrugations of the ring-gear mechanism), but sometimes users have complaints about their reliability and durability. High-quality keyless chucks cost a lot of money, and sooner or later the chuck will have to be replaced.

It is worth paying special attention to the maximum mounting diameter of the cartridge. The minimum is usually not limited (sometimes the cams converge almost to zero, more often to 1.5 mm), but there is always an upper limit. This is traditionally 10, 13 or 16 mm. Naturally, such restrictions depend on the power characteristics of the machine and are subject to them. The “ten” chuck is placed on a light-class tool, the 16th drill can only be pulled by a powerful drill, 13 is the diameter of the average drill.

Metal gear housing directly indicates that the instrument belongs to the professional class. Thanks to this design, heat is better removed from moving parts, ensuring high stability of the unit, although the weight of the drill inevitably increases.

Electronic speed control. This is something different than changing gearbox speeds. In this case, using a thyristor or rheostat. Full-wave adjustment is ensured by the degree of pressing on the sensitive start key; press harder - the speed is higher. The rotation speed can be set in steps; for this, a special wheel (Hitachi D10VC2) or a slide switch is used - this control is usually located on the body.

Note that with electronic adjustment we limit the output power of the instrument, which does not happen with mechanical preset.

Advanced models have frequency maintenance system under load(constant electronics), thanks to which the machine monitors the load and maintains the set parameters using the power reserves of the motor. It turns out that we can not only clearly adjust the tool to a specific material, but also avoid jamming when there is a sharp change in density or an increase in pressure (AEG SB 22 2E).

I have high-tech drills winding temperature sensors, which eliminates the possibility of damage to the motor due to overloads. In critical cases, the power is automatically turned off or the LED indication is activated.

It will be very relevant for powerful drills "soft start" system, which slowly accelerates the equipment to optimal speed (it is easier to start drilling exactly at the mark), eliminating starting jerks (increases the durability of transmission elements) and overloading of electrical networks (AEG SB2E 1200 RST).

Pulse drill operation helps to unscrew stuck fasteners, start drilling without punching, and “defeat” too hard material. Interestingly, such a system works on the principle of a load surge, as with inrush currents (Metabo SBE 900 IMPULS). Using this function within reasonable limits will allow you to solve a number of complex problems, but you should understand that in this mode the tool works extremely, and the wear of the most important components increases.

Another point is the possibility fixing the power button in the on state(SPARKY BUR 150CET). What does this give? Firstly, while working, you can release the key and change the grip of the instrument, simply relax your hand. Secondly, only such drills can be installed permanently on a tripod or in a magnetic stand (Metabo B 7532/4), resulting in a lightweight drilling machine.

The most important little things

  • When choosing a specific model, it is not enough just to understand the technical characteristics of the tool; you also need to find your own, the most convenient one.
  • We always recommend shaking the machine thoroughly in your hands, paying special attention to the configuration and type of handles, both main and auxiliary. Some people will prefer thin handles, others more voluminous ones. Feel the pads; it is better if they have a grooved and non-slip surface.
  • Try to feel the weight distribution of the drill; there are very interesting options in this regard, for example, with a pistol grip shifted forward (DeWalt DWD215G).
  • Be sure to evaluate the accessibility of all controls, their informativeness and ease of switching.
  • Take a look at the length of the power cord and the material it is made from. A soft, long cable will significantly increase comfort when working “on site”.
  • Check how well the chuck holds the drill, how easy/difficult it is to change, what is its real minimum and maximum (drill diameter).
  • Feel the machine for spindle play.
  • Run the drill in various modes, try to determine possible beats, noise, and power loss under load.
  • Please note that permanent installation is possible. Typically, the size of the tripod seat is 43 mm in diameter.
  • Compare the contents of competing products. A case, drills, a metal depth stop, a spare cartridge - all these things, if they are branded (!), cost a lot.

Once again I would like to say, choose a tool based on the predicted loads. Focus on the maximum allowable size of equipment. Don’t chase after additional bells and whistles just to make it happen. Keep in mind that the only part in the tool that does not break is the part that is not included in the design.

Among hand-held power tools, probably the most common is the corded hammerless drill. With its help you can cope with drilling metal, plastic, wood and other materials. For drilling holes in masonry or concrete, there are impact drills, which in their properties resemble hammer drills, but are more inexpensive, allowing these units to be used as a tool for the home.

Our review includes the best models of different levels, including price. For convenience, drills have been divided into popular categories. Nowadays, the issue of selecting power tools for home use is closely related to quality, manufacturer, performance and price. The problem of saving personal funds is becoming increasingly urgent. Therefore, today an important criterion is the price-quality ratio. How to choose an electric drill? How is a drill different from a hammer drill? A competent approach to choosing a model in accordance with the necessary requirements will help to replenish your arsenal of tools with a reliable assistant without causing damage to your wallet.

What is a drill, what types of work does the tool perform?

An electric drill, or electric drill, is a tool for household and industrial use for drilling holes in various materials: wood, metal, stone, plastic and others. The tool acquires new abilities if you use special attachments: grinding discs, polishing wheels, roughening brushes.

For household electric drills on the market, the minimum and maximum diameters of the drilled holes are 1.5–14 mm, this diameter is determined by the grip width of the chuck jaws. If you need to drill larger holes, there are drills with a thin shank (10 mm) clamped in a standard chuck. When using such drills, remember that the drill drive motor receives excess load. Do not allow the motor to overheat.

What is the difference between a drill and a hammer drill?

The differences between a drill and a hammer drill are not noticeable at first glance, but they are significant. A drill is intended for drilling holes, and a hammer drill is a tool that breaks holes in any solid material or crushes it. Although many modern drills have an impact function, impact power (the energy transferred to the drill) is very low. A hammer drill differs from a drill in that impact is its main mode of operation - the energy with which the drill cuts into the material reaches tens of joules.

Types of drills

Electric drills vary in available functions (impact/non-impact) and type of power supply (corded/cordless).

Shocked or unstressed

As the name suggests, a simple hammerless drill performs one function - drilling holes. Often an electric drill has an impact mechanism. An impact drill can drill holes in concrete or brick by hitting the rotating drill bit in an axial direction. On models of this design, there is a drilling mode switch for hammer drilling mode: usually an icon with a drill image indicates a simple drilling mode, a picture with a hammer activates the hammer mode.

An impact drill cannot compete with a hammer drill when chiseling deep holes or grooves; only a hammer drill is suitable for this.

Mains or battery

A corded drill is a tool with a cable and a plug for connecting to a 220 V power supply. This drill is used permanently, within one workplace, mobility is limited by the length of the cable. Battery models make the range of applications wider and can be used in rooms with no power supply or outdoors. But at the same time, there remains a need to connect the charger for the drill battery to the mains. Both mains-powered and battery-powered models are suitable for home and garden use.

Power tools from different manufacturers differ in price levels. The more expensive the device, the higher the build quality, the better the materials used in its manufacture. Professional tools that can work a full shift cost 2–3 times more than household ones. You shouldn't overpay for industrial drills if you drill holes occasionally.

How to choose an electric drill for your home

To choose the right electric drill for your household, you must consider the following criteria:

  • presence of a striking mechanism;
  • mains or battery version;
  • electric drill power;
  • shaft rotation speed;
  • drilling diameter;
  • cartridge type;
  • equipment.

For home use, a drill with an impact mechanism is preferable. In everyday life there is a need to drill walls to attach various building elements, furniture, paintings, lamp brackets and other things. There is no need for a drill with a battery as such. A network model is also quite suitable for home use. In some cases, you may need an extension cable for connection.

Electric drill power

Electric drills intended for use at home have a power from 500 W to 1 thousand W. This amount of power makes it possible to drill holes in wood, metal, concrete and other materials that are found in everyday life. It is unlikely that at home there will be a need to drill metal more than 3 mm thick. When selecting a drill based on power, it is worth taking into account the intensity of the planned work. Household use involves short-term drilling modes. Long-term continuous drilling can lead to overheating of the armature and failure of the winding. The electric drill must be allowed to cool, especially if you can clearly feel heat emanating from the body of the tool or the characteristic smell of burnt electrical insulating material.

Shaft speed

The rotation speed of the drill shaft is 500–1500 rpm. To process different materials, modern electric drills have rotation speed regulators. The quality of drilling depends on the correctly selected cutting mode. High rotation speed is required for smooth and precise holes. When drilling metal, monitor the heating temperature of the drill and the force of pressure on the drill. If the drill is overheated, it can be damaged - the metal will anneal and lose strength. For metal work, medium rotation speeds are suitable. When drilling concrete or brick with a pobedit-tipped drill, switch the drill to impact mode and set the rotation speed to high.

To replace mortar or tighten a screw, medium or low rotation speed is suitable. To perform work with special grinding or stripping attachments, a high-speed mode is required.

Drilling diameter

The power tool data sheet indicates the maximum diameter of the holes to be drilled. Minimum values are usually not noted (about 1.5 mm). The product passport provides information on the maximum diameters of holes drilled in various materials: wood, concrete, metal.

Chuck type

Modern models of electric drills are equipped with two types of chucks.

For home use, a drill with a metal key chuck is preferable.

The disadvantage of a key cartridge is that the key can get lost. It is recommended to secure the wrench to the drill cord.

Equipment

Drills on sale can be presented as a separate tool, or supplemented with components. The main components for an electric drill are drills of various diameters and purposes. Additional components:

  • reserve cartridge;
  • grinding attachments;
  • core drills;
  • scans;
  • mixers.

It is very convenient if the drill is placed in a plastic case.

Drills are divided according to the material being processed:

  • metal - steel drills with a spiral groove;
  • wood - spiral drills with a centering tip, feather and beam - for drilling large diameter holes;
  • concrete - twist drills with a special carbide tip and crowns;
  • glass - spear-shaped drills with an abrasive or diamond coating for making holes in ceramics and glass.

When choosing a drill, the equipment is important. Buying different devices is subsequently more expensive than buying them as a single set.

The manufacturer bears warranty responsibility not only for the tool, but also for the quality of the equipment.

Additional functions

Drilling holes is not the only useful function of the tool in question. Using an electric drill you can perform the following work:

  • tightening fasteners (screws, self-tapping screws);
  • grinding and cleaning surfaces of various materials;
  • preparation of construction mixtures.

All of the above types of work require the necessary equipment: metal brushes, mixers, extension cords, angle attachments.

Other important criteria

When choosing a drill, you should pay attention to the presence of a quality certificate and the manufacturer’s warranty period. Today, the country of origin of the product is not significant. The build quality of Chinese products depends on the brand of the manufacturer. Many European and American tool companies locate production in China and other Asian countries to reduce the cost of production due to cheap labor. However, the requirements for build quality do not change.

Rating of models for home use

The manufacturer's brand, power and build quality of the tool are of great importance for determining the price. From the existing offers on the market, you can select a reliable and high-quality tool worth up to 3 thousand rubles, suitable for the necessary selection criteria. For products from leading companies in this industry, you will have to pay about 6–7 thousand rubles.

Definitely, the choice depends on the budget, but do not forget about the quality of the materials used in the manufacture of power tool parts. During operation, the drill is subjected to physical stress, vibration, overheating, and wear of the rubbing parts in the gearbox, so the quality of the assembly matters. Some models are presented on the market both with a key chuck and with a quick-release chuck.
