The tragedy lies in something completely different - that they fell into delusion. That is, into a state of spiritual delusion, which threatens them with eternal death if they do not abandon it.

As Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov) wrote, “delusion is the assimilation by a person of a lie that he accepts as the truth. Charm acts initially on the way of thinking; Having been accepted and perverting the way of thinking, it is immediately communicated to the heart, perverting the heart’s sensations; Having mastered the essence of a person, it spills over into all his activities... The state of delusion is a state of destruction or eternal death” (On delusion, 1).

The charm in this case is expressed, firstly, in the fact that they, calling themselves Orthodox Christians, trusted the false prophecy of their leader, who appointed the end of the world for March 2008, and thereby rejected Christ, who said: “About that day and hour no one neither the heavenly angels know, but only My Father alone” (Matthew 24:36); and at another time: “It is not your business to know the times or seasons which the Father has appointed in His authority” (Acts 1:7).

And secondly, this was manifested in the promise of the “Penza inmates” to commit suicide if they tried to evacuate them from this cave. Any Orthodox Christian knows that suicide is the gravest of sins, an insult to God’s gift. And the fact that for these people it is easier to commit a sin against God than to refuse to do the will of their leader means that they fall under the word of the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes the flesh his support, and whose heart departs from the Lord.” (Jer. 17:5).

What is prophecy

Prophecy is a special gift from God. The prophet announces the future. And this is proof of his true connection with God. As we know, time is a property of our created world. We all exist in time, perceiving the present, past and future. We don't know what will actually happen. Only He who is outside of time and for whom our past, present, and future is clearly visible knows this for sure. And outside of time and the world there is only the One who created the world and time - God. It is on this basis that the Bible instructs to distinguish a false prophet from a true one: “And the Lord said... the prophet who dares to speak in My name what I did not command him to say, and who speaks in the name of other gods, such a prophet shall you put to death. And if you say in your heart: “How can we know a word that the Lord has not spoken?” If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, but the word does not come true and is not fulfilled, then it was not the Lord who spoke this word, but the prophet who spoke this out of his boldness, do not be afraid of him” (Deut. 18: 17, 20-22).

Any of the readers can pronounce a formal "prophecy". For example, he will say: tomorrow I will write a letter and, indeed, he will write the next day. But we understand perfectly well that this has nothing to do with the real prophecy. Because he doesn’t know the real future, and tomorrow something may well happen that we won’t have time to write at all.

By the way, false prophets and fortune-tellers “work” on the same principle, as well as the devil who broadcasts through them - partly a forecast, and partly a plan for our own actions. But the devil also does not know the future; he, just like a created being, is “inside” time. That is why the devil’s predictions, like human forecasts, are always given for the short term. And this is understandable. It’s easy to say: tomorrow I’ll write a letter and write. But to say: in a year I will write a letter - and doing this is already more difficult. The likelihood of fulfilling even your own plan becomes much less. And say: in thirty years I will write a letter?.. Will we be alive by then? And to say: in a hundred years my descendant will write such and such a letter?.. Well, here everyone will wave his hand, considering it a pure invention.

You can, of course, in the manner of Nostradamus, indulge in vague word-weaving: “Time will pass and the great king will write a letter to another king,” and under such a “prophecy” even 500 years later, idle onlookers will be able to sum up the events of their time after the fact: here, President Bush sent a letter President Sarkozy, congratulating him on taking office - it means that the ancient prophecy has come true!

But in the Bible there are specific prophecies that were fulfilled in detail centuries after they were spoken and written down. And this is one of the evidence of her divine origin.

The most important and striking example is the Old Testament prophecies about the suffering and death of Christ.

The very fact: “Christ will be put to death” (Dan. 9: 26) and its purpose: “He was wounded for our sins and tormented for our iniquities; the chastisement of the world was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5). Betrayal from a friend is so predicted: “The man who was at peace with Me, in whom I trusted, who ate My bread, lifted up his heel against Me” (Ps. 40:10); The prophet even names the price: “And I will say to them: if it pleases you, then give Me My wages... and they will weigh out thirty pieces of silver to pay Me” (Zech. 11: 12).

False accusations: “False witnesses have risen up against Me and breathe malice” (Ps. 26:12), silence before the accusers: “But I am like a deaf man who does not hear, and like a dumb man who does not open his mouth” (Ps. 37: 14); ridicule and mockery: “all who see Me mock Me; They say with their mouths, nodding their heads: “He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver Him, if He pleases Him”” (Ps. 21: 8-9); scourging, beating and spitting: “I have given My back to the smiters, and My cheeks to the smiters; I did not hide My face from mocking and spitting” (Isa. 50: 6) and in Micah - they will beat the Judge of Israel on the cheek with a cane (see: Mic. 5: 1).

Crucifixion: “dogs surrounded Me, a crowd of evil ones surrounded Me, they pierced My hands and My feet” (Ps. 21:17); “and they gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink” (Ps. 68:22); “they divide My garments among themselves and cast lots for My clothing” (Ps. 21:19), “all My bones could be numbered, but they look and make a spectacle of Me” (Ps. 21:18), “for love They are hostile to Me, but I pray” (Ps. 109:4): “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me? (Ps. 21:2).

Death with the evildoers: “he gave up his soul to death, and was numbered with the evildoers” (Is. 53:12), witnessed by a solar eclipse: “the sun and the moon will darken and the stars will lose their shine” (Joel 3:15); piercing of the heart and grief of the disciples: “and My heart is wounded in Me” (Ps. 109: 22), “they will look at Him whom they have pierced, and will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only begotten son, and grieves, as one mourns for the firstborn.” (Zechariah 12:10); burial with a rich man: “He was assigned a grave with evildoers, but He was buried with a rich man” (Is. 53:9).

With the coming of Christ, the prophecies concerning Him were fulfilled, but not all, because part of the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah refers to His second, glorious coming, which will take place before the end of the world. And our Lord Jesus Christ Himself made predictions about the fate of Jerusalem - its conquest by Roman troops, and about other events.

For example, one woman with an alabaster vessel poured incense on the head of Jesus, and when the apostles were indignant at the waste of such precious incense, they heard: “Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, it will be said in her memory that what she did” (Matthew 26:13). These words are contained in manuscript p-64, dating from the 2nd century A.D., when Christianity was still a persecuted and very small group, so that by all human standards there was no guarantee that their Scripture would even survive, not to mention already about being preached throughout the world. Moreover, if we remember how at the beginning of the 4th century, Emperor Diocletian decided to confiscate and destroy Christian books throughout the Roman Empire. He really intended to put an end to Christianity: “Let the name of Christians perish,” was written in his decree. And yet we are all witnesses that the word of the Lord Jesus Christ came true exactly, in all details, and many centuries later - when all parts of the world on Earth were discovered.

And now the Bible is the most widespread book in the world, it is read on all five continents, it has been translated into 2426 languages, published in a total circulation of about 6 billion copies, and wherever the Gospel is read, the woman with the alabaster vessel is remembered. A specific example of an accurate prophecy, which is not written down retroactively, but is in manuscripts older than its fulfillment, and anyone can be convinced of this exact fulfillment.

We find examples of true prophecies both in the book of Acts and in the apostolic epistles; finally, in the New Testament there is an entirely prophetic book - the Apocalypse, which consists entirely of prophecies about future events.

It was already easier in many ways for the next generations of Christians, and people began to work less and less spiritually, and where there is less spiritual work, there are, naturally, less spiritual fruits. However, the gift of prophecy, like other gifts of God, has never left the Orthodox Church, and it still exists today.

Prophecy is an extraordinary gift. It is quite natural that those who undertake extraordinary spiritual feats are honored with it. The feat of monasticism or foolishness for the sake of Christ is just one of these, therefore, even from the lives of the saints, we can notice that this gift is more common among the saints and blessed than among the laity, glorified in the rank of righteous people.

As for how to distinguish a true prophecy from a false one, one biblical criterion is obvious, we have already mentioned it: does the prophecy come true? For example, sometimes some people who consider themselves Orthodox spread various rumors: “Such and such an “elder” predicted that then such and such a cataclysm would happen.” And then the appointed time comes, but there is no cataclysm. And then these people, in order to justify the embarrassment, say: “The elder prayed for it” - or something else in the same spirit. But Scripture teaches us something else: if someone predicted it and it didn’t come true, then he is a false prophet, worthy not of veneration, but of death. And those who transmitted these false prophecies must repent as sowing deception and lies, introducing temptation. Will the “Penza inmates” do this after May 2008? Very doubtful.

The second criterion that Holy Scripture offers us is contained in the Apostle Paul: “Even if we or an angel from heaven preached to you a gospel other than what we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8). So if any prophecy contradicts Scripture and the faith of the Church, then you don’t even have to wait: this is obviously a word not from God.

And here the “Penza inmates,” if they really were Orthodox Christians, might not even have waited for May 2008, since the very fact that Peter Kuznetsov set the date for the “end of the world” contradicts the teachings of Christ transmitted by the apostles.

But people, alas, are very susceptible to all kinds of prophecies. A passion for all kinds of predictions, just like a passion for miracles, is a sign of unhealthy spiritual life of a person.

“The desire to be in communication and interaction with the world, to constantly talk and recklessly talk idle, to always look for news and even false prophecies, to promise much beyond one’s strength - this is the essence of spiritual temptation” (Rev. Isaac the Syrian. Homily 79).

Why is the prophecy contained in Scripture not enough for a person, and he begins to look for others? Because he wants to find out in advance what awaits him and the people of his area, in order to rush in time: if they predict an earthquake, then leave the city; if they predict the coming of the Antichrist, then run in advance to the mountains, forests, or, at worst, to the Penza cave and there, as in a bunker, “to wait out the apocalypse.” As the Russian proverb says, “If I had known where I would fall, I would have laid out straws.” Here, too, is the same desire to “lay out the straws” in advance. Of course, this all stems from lack of faith and unwillingness to accept the will of God.

A true Christian trusts God like a child trusts his father and is not afraid of the future, for he knows that the Lord will allow only what is useful to happen and will always be there and that He is able to deliver from any trouble better than anyone else. The one who wants to “spread straws” shows that he has more hope in his actions; he only needs information about the future from God. This is a serious misconception, and the Lord warned against being carried away by research into the future - “it is not your business to know the times or dates that the Father has appointed in His authority” (Acts 1: 7).

What kind of prophecies can you trust?

You need to believe all the prophecies of the Bible. At the same time, we must also remember the words of the apostles: “No prophecy in Scripture can be explained by oneself” (2 Pet. 1:20). Therefore, Canon 19 of the VI Ecumenical Council instructs all Christians to interpret the Bible “no differently than as the luminaries and teachers of the Church have set forth in their writings.” So the prophecies of Scripture as interpreted by the holy fathers of the Church - that is, the great teachers glorified by her - are what we must completely trust.

As for the predictions attributed to various saints, they should be treated with extreme caution. The overwhelming majority of the currently popular predictions of saints have come down to us in the retelling of other persons. Before trusting, it is worth finding out: were there any mistakes or even outright forgeries made in the retellings? Unfortunately, this happens quite often. It has long been known, for example, that not everything that is attributed to St. Seraphim of Sarov was actually spoken by the elder, especially with regard to prophecies. And back in 1908, followers of the Johannite sect spread false prophecies in the name of St. John of Kronstadt that the end of the world would supposedly happen in 1910. Yes, even in the example of our contemporary elders, we see such sad phenomena when people begin to speak their own inventions on their behalf. The same thing, alas, happened in ancient times, as the Lord testified to the prophet Jeremiah: “The prophets prophesy falsely in My name; I did not send them, nor command them, nor speak to them; They tell you false visions and fortune-telling, and empty things and the dreams of their hearts” (Jer. 14:14).

However, when a prediction is contained in a reliable work of a saint, attention should be paid to it. For example, many people testified that the predictions of Saint Cosmas of Aetolia were exactly fulfilled. There is also reliable evidence of the lifetime predictions of St. John of Kronstadt to private individuals, which came true.

I am reminded of the prophecy of St. Anthony the Great about the times “when people will go mad, and if they see someone who is not mad, they will rise up against him and say: “You are going mad,” because he is not like them.” It was in the second half of the twentieth century that there was a general erosion of traditional moral values, which remained so from the time of St. Anthony until the time of our grandfathers, such as marriage, family, fidelity, home, work, children, unfeigned faith, self-sacrifice. And now a person who sincerely embodies them in his life is perceived by modern “enlightened” society as a madman, an outcast. However, it must be borne in mind that some saints expressed their assumptions about the future not as prophecies they received directly from the Lord, but rather as their own reflections.

And you need to be especially careful regarding the “prophecies” circulating among the people, attributed to vague elders or even to some specific contemporaries of ours. I’ll give just one example: once a Romanian monk came to Athos on a pilgrimage. And he had a dream that there was an earthquake in Russia. The next morning he told the Russian pilgrims who were in the same monastery about his dream. They told their friends, they told someone else, and as a result, a month later, thousands of Russian people heard that, supposedly, “the Athonite elders predicted that on such and such a date (a specific date was named) there would be a terrible earthquake in Russia.” Hundreds of people succumbed to mass psychosis, abandoning their businesses, leaving, taking out property... Of course, no earthquake happened.
