How to update a wooden entrance door. How to update a door: original ideas. Wallpaper with moldings

Replacing old doors with new ones is quite expensive, since interior doors to the toilet and bathroom are mostly made in the same style, that is, if they are replaced, then all at once.

Therefore, we offer 4 master classes on how to update wooden doors with your own hands, with photos and detailed instructions. And not just paint, but implement interesting design solutions!

The simplest and easiest method of updating is to make beautiful geometric door stickers. To do this, you will need a self-adhesive film, preferably contrasting with the color of the door.

  1. Make a preliminary marking of the pattern on the surface with a pencil.
  2. Apply the film and press and rub the air under the film with a rag.
  3. This method does not require removing the door leaf from its hinges; it can also be done in a vertical position.

ATTENTION: Just please do not completely cover the doors with wood-grain film! It looks terrible and old fashioned! It’s better to take a plain film and geometry.

You can cover the doors with a one-color film for chalk drawing; it is not cheap, but it looks impressive. And change the inscriptions every day!

Painting wooden doors

Also, this method is not labor-intensive and requires minimal costs! You can paint your interior doors in absolutely any color! Here we will discuss in detail how to do this. But Painting requires removal of the doors with hinges.

What kind of paint do we use:

  • Any for interior and interior woodwork, water and acrylic based— it is absolutely odorless! Alkyd paint is of no use to you!
  • Take matte, not glossy. Glyantseva will highlight all the irregularities on your surface.
  • Paint in a can is dangerous because if you are painting for the first time, you are unlikely to paint it evenly!! Also, if you are planning to paint directly in the apartment, keep in mind that it “flies” in all directions. Therefore, it is better for beginners to start with regular paint and a roller.

What we paint and the technique for painting a door:

  • Solid and smooth doors - only wide roller! We paint in 2-3 layers with a very thin coating.
  • If the doors have panels, then first we paint all the recesses with a thin brush, and then we do a full coating with a roller.

Door with overlay strips

A door with embossed overlays looks much more original and interesting than a regular flat one. Making such changes is quite simple and does not take much time. In terms of money, the cost will be only a little more than just painting, and much cheaper than buying a new door.

Necessary materials:

  • Door
    Overlay wooden planks
    Roulette
    Long ruler and construction angle
    Pencil
    Saw
  • Miter box
    Liquid nails or other wood glue
    Scotch
  • Paint (white here)
    Building level (not necessary, but very helpful for checking how level you are installing the trim strips)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: Paint the door. First you need to repaint the old wooden door in the chosen color, in this case white. Leave to dry.

On top of the dried paint you need to mark the fastening of the overhead wooden planks. To do this, draw lines with a pencil (without pressing it too hard) and a ruler, to get perpendicular lines, use a construction corner.

In this case, the drawing consists of two rectangles located one above the other.

  • In the photo below you can see all the calculations that show how much to retreat: 5" (about 13 cm) everywhere except the bottom of the door, where the distance from the edge to the line is 6" (about 15 cm).
  • You can make other indentations, depending on the size of the door (for example, if you decide to update the cabinet doors in the same way, you need to indent clearly less).

Step 3: Cut out the strips

Now you need to cut the strips of the appropriate size (measure the length of the outlined lines). If you don't have the necessary tools at home, this can be done directly at a hardware store for a small additional fee. If you do it yourself, you will need not only a saw, but also a miter box to cut out the ends of the planks are at an angle of 45 degrees.

Step 4: Attach the planks

Place all the planks on the marked lines. Make sure they are all the right length and meet evenly at the corners.

  1. Now lift each plank in turn, apply glue to it and put it back in place. If excess glue suddenly leaks out from under the plank, you can remove it with a damp paper towel.
  2. Glue must dry for about 24 hours. To ensure that the planks stick evenly and reliably, attach them with tape while drying, fixing the position and pressing down.
  3. A larger amount of tape ensures secure fastening.

Note: you can glue already painted planks, or glue and then paint; You can also not paint the door at first (skip step 1), but do it together with the glued strips.

Step 5: Install the door

After the glue has dried, you need to carefully peel the tape off the door; it is better to use masking tape that does not leave marks.

Now all that remains is to put the remodeled door in place and attach the handle. And everything is ready!

Door with overlay panels

This master class differs from the previous one in that here we will not only attach the planks, but also fill the inside of the doors has overlay panels.

Necessary materials:

  • Plastic panels (we make these here, but wooden panels can also be used)
  • Roulette
  • Pencil
  • Building level
  • Construction adhesive
  • Latex paint
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Hand saw
  • Screws
  • Safety glasses and earmuffs
  • Putty for plastic
  • Putty knife
  • Sander (or sandpaper)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: Correct the door defects. If the door is very old and has some defects that cannot be hidden by painting (for example, the top coating has chipped off in places, or there are deep scratches), then initially you need to remove them and make the surface smooth.

  • To do this, apply wood putty and let it dry,
  • then level it surface with a grinding machine or sandpaper.

Step 2: Outlining the location of the planks

We will do the marking here the same as in the previous case, that is, we will retreat 5" (about 13 cm) everywhere except the bottom of the door, where we leave 6" (about 15 cm).

ADVICE: If there is no long ruler, lines can be drawn using a building level.

Step 3: Attach the panel

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the plastic panels.

Place the panels on the door and check that they are positioned correctly using a level. The sides of the panels should be clearly parallel to the edges of the door.

Press down on the panel until it presses firmly against the door and sticks securely. Secure this entire structure around the perimeter with small screws using a screwdriver.

Step 4: Attach the planks

Again, you can either cut the planks to size at a shop, or do it yourself using a saw and miter box. The strips should surround the panels around the perimeter, fitting tightly to them.

Note: The planks can initially be glued with construction adhesive and then secured with screws.

This is what should happen at this stage:

Step 5: Paint the door. Now all that remains is to paint the door and leave it until completely dry.

Now compare the door before and after repair:

The applied relief makes the door more stylish and affects the appearance of the entire room as a whole:

Don't be afraid to change up old items and give them a different look. Give them the opportunity to serve you again, but in a new guise!

  3. Method 4: Vinyl Stickers
  4. Method 5: overhead facades
  5. Method 6: Canvas Update
  6. Decor accessories
  7. Repair is easy

When repairing a solid wood door, it often requires restoration rather than replacement. This measure will allow you to save on updating the canvas and keep a quality product in its place. In addition, restoration of wooden doors helps to adapt them to different styles, which periodically change during the renovation of premises.

Restore or change?

When the question of replacing a door arises, few people think that it can be restored. In what cases is this really the best measure:

When repairing wooden doors is impractical and it is rational to choose reinstallation of the block:

  • The old door leaf and frame, which have become unusable: have dried out, cracked, the integrity of the structure has been compromised;
  • The door is made of cheap materials: fiberboard, MDF, etc.

The decision to update the entrance or interior door should not cause concerns about the work; it can be done independently. Next, we provide detailed instructions on how to update doors, and consider methods for restoring panels and door frames.

What tool is useful for the job?

To update or restore an old wooden door, you need to prepare the door leaf for work. To do this you will need the following tools:

They will be useful for the restoration process itself.:

  • Spatulas for leveling depressions and irregularities on the surface of the canvas;
  • Wood putty, close to the natural color of the base;
  • Stain, varnish, paint depending on the chosen type of restoration;
  • Brushes, sponges and rollers for uniform application of coloring compounds on solid wood.

Preparing the canvas for updating

Before you begin repairing old wooden doors, you need to take a number of measures to prepare the door leaf and frame:

In cases where there are significant potholes on the door, you can place a piece of wood in them and rub it with a spatula. This method will save on materials - the cork will be securely fixed in a small amount of solution.

How to repair?

When the preparatory work is over and the plaster has dried, you can begin decorating the canvases. There are several ways to restore a wooden door:

  1. Sanding with painting and varnishing;
  2. Wallpapering;
  3. Drawing from a stencil;
  4. Vinyl stickers;
  5. Overlay facades;
  6. Canvas update.

All methods are used in modern restoration work. Each process requires an individual approach.

Option 1: sanding and painting

This is an ideal way to restore veneered surfaces. A correctly selected composition of the dye may not hide, but rather emphasize the wood pattern on the door. After all the preparatory work, the canvas is evenly painted in the desired color. For deep color saturation, place enamel in 2 – 3 rows. Veneering is difficult without special equipment, but updating the pattern and color is easier than ever. By painting you can also preserve the antique decor of the door.

Before coating with varnish, you should go over the surface with stain to prevent the development of fungi and mold.

Option 2: wallpapering

Repairing a door block with wallpaper is another interesting idea that completely combines all the objects and structures in the interior. You can update this method at least every year during repairs and outside of this event: it is easy to do and the cost of coverage is quite small.

How to update wooden doors with wallpaper:

  • It is necessary to apply one layer of primer to the prepared canvas and wait until it dries completely;
  • The wallpaper is pre-cut to the size of the door. This must be done carefully so that the cut out outline then coincides with the door. Ideally, make a paper overlay with allowance for folding.
  • Now apply glue to the wood and attach the paper sheet. If the wallpaper is non-woven, spread glue onto the roll and glue it to the base.. Smooth out well and remove excess glue. After drying, attach the fittings and hang the canvas.

Option 3: Stencil painting

Do-it-yourself restoration of wooden doors can be done using stencils. They are sold ready-made or made independently on a large sheet of paper or wallpaper.

To apply the finished drawing, follow the instructions:

  1. The prepared base is coated with paint or varnish and allowed to dry;
  2. A stencil is glued onto a dry surface;
  3. Cover free space inside or outside;
  4. Tear off the template and wait for the paint to dry.

Method 4: Vinyl Stickers

A modern option for interior decoration. Vinyl stickers are not afraid of moisture and water, the sun, they are easy to wash and clean if necessary. It is very simple to paste them over a door: apply the sticker and smooth it out. The advantage of modern interior stickers is their reusability and versatility. They are easily removed from the surface without leaving a mark; if desired, the location of the stickers can be changed. Suitable for decorating plastic balcony doors.

Method 5: overhead facades

Repairing interior wooden doors using conventional methods may sometimes not give the expected effect and the process will require drastic measures. When you need not to restore, but to completely renew the facade of a door, overhead facades will come to the rescue. They are made from different materials; it is advisable to purchase an MDF overlay:

A door restored in this way radically changes its appearance.

  1. Purchase a canvas of the appropriate size;
  2. Place the overhead façade on the prepared base;
  3. Attach it with self-tapping screws or PVA glue.

Method 6: Canvas Update

How to update an old interior door if you want to add or change the arrangement of glass in the leaves? To do this you will have to work:

Decor accessories

If the door is antique, it is probably equipped with fittings made in ancient times, which are a real crime to throw away. When handles and hinges wear out, it is better to restore them rather than throw them away.

To breathe life into the fittings, treat the products with sandpaper to prevent possible corrosion, and cover with a layer of primer-enamel. It will not hide the ornament applied to the handles, but will only emphasize it favorably. After drying, the handles and loops can be attached back to the canvas and hung in the opening.

Repair is easy

We told you how to make a new one out of an old door without replacing its main parts. These processes may seem difficult, but in fact even an inexperienced master can cope with them. The main thing is to start. You can change the appearance of any door:

  • Input;
  • Interior;
  • Leading to the balcony.

You can come up with your own method of restoration: coating with acrylic paints, painting, etc. The main thing is to properly organize the preparatory stage to create a working foundation, and then everything will go like clockwork. The main thing is not to be afraid and start.

If you look with horror at your interior doors with peeling paint that no longer hides imperfections with adhesive film, chips and cracks, but your budget is down to the last penny, it’s time to start restoration. It is this measure that will allow you to quickly and efficiently restore the canvas without resorting to purchasing new doors.

Typically made from plastic, glass, wood and its derivatives. And there are a lot of different restoration methods, but the most important stage is cleaning and preparing the canvas. It is important to carefully remove all traces of paint, grease, old seals, and level the door so that the door looks like new in the future.

We are preparing a wooden door for restoration. Removing fittings and paint

The first thing to do is to carefully remove the door from its hinges and place it on the floor or four stools.

Hinges can be invisible, mortise, screw-in, card removable or non-removable. Since the entire door leaf will be restored, the hinges must be temporarily completely dismantled. To do this, unscrew all the bolts and caps, pry the door from below with a crowbar, lift it, remove it and set it aside.

In addition to the hinges, you should remove all other fittings that will interfere with further work.

How to remove paint. Method one - grinding

If the door is flat and there are a lot of layers of paint, you should take the canvas outside and try to clean it with a sanding machine. The work is quite dusty, the grinding wheels quickly become clogged, but the result will not be long in coming.

The second method is the use of chemistry

You can find various solvents and old paint destroyers on sale. One of them is B52. Operating principle: wetting the surface, waiting, cleaning the peeled coatings with a spatula.

In addition to the fact that this work is very difficult and harmful (solvent vapors are unsafe for health), it is worth noting that chemicals cannot cope with a large number of layers of old coating. Therefore, this method is only suitable for cleaning small areas of the door with a thin layer of old paint.

You can make your own paint remover mixture by mixing caustic soda, water and oatmeal to a thick consistency. This slurry should be distributed over the canvas, and after 30-50 minutes, cleaned off with a metal spatula along with the swollen paint layer.

It is important to use gloves and a respirator!

Method three - using a gas burner

For fire safety reasons, work should only be carried out outdoors. Paint heated by a torch comes off easily, but at the same time it can smoke and emit pungent odors.

This method is applicable only if you know how to handle a burner, have prepared a sufficient supply of cylinders and are ready to warn your neighbors about the upcoming work.

Method four - using a hair dryer

This method is the most productive and safe. Even if there are layers of paint on the door that were applied several decades ago, they will peel off easily, and there will be no burning or chemical smells during operation.

Heat the paint and scrape it off with a sharp spatula. Be careful not to damage the wood. Do not lean over the door, as the air temperature is about 600 degrees.

Method five - soft blasting

The method involves gentle, careful removal of complex contaminants and old paint and varnish coatings from metal, glass, and wood. In this case, the door leaf will not be damaged. When working in conjunction with a jet of compressed air, Armex biodegradable cleaner will be applied to the surface of the door.

The main disadvantage of this seemingly ideal method is the inability to perform work at home, the need to deliver the door to a workshop and the associated costs.

Method six - Using a drill and attachment

Stores sell special abrasive brush attachments that fit onto the drill. Metal fibers will remove old paint, but may damage the wood of the canvas. To process the entire door, you may need not one, but several replacement nozzles, the cost of which is 120-170 rubles per piece.

Plastering a wooden door

After all layers of old paint have been removed, you should take sandpaper, secure it to the holder and carefully sand the door, making movements along the grain line. This measure will allow you to remove paint from hard-to-reach areas, smooth out scratches and chips.

After sanding, vacuum the door and wipe it with white spirit, degreasing it.

Open the can of primer, mix and apply a thin layer of the mixture to the door. will extend the life of the wood and serve as the basis for a new paint coating. The average primer consumption is 100 grams per 1 square meter of canvas. The average price of a package weighing 2.5 kg is 280-350 rubles.

Using a narrow spatula, apply the mixed wood putty. Distribute it and leave to dry. After this, you will have to sand the entire door again with fine-grained sandpaper to eliminate all the smallest defects.

If there is a large, deep crack on the door, it can be eliminated by selecting a piece of wood that is suitable in size and color. We coat the sliver with wood glue and firmly drive it into the crack. After about a day, the glue will dry and the door will be ready for priming, puttying and painting.

Strengthening the door

If your door has dried out from age and is no longer strong enough, it is recommended to strengthen the door leaf and frame. And this must be done immediately after the preparation, but before the staining process.

If the blade is deformed, a plane will help correct the geometry. We remove excess wood with a tool, simultaneously checking the accuracy of the corners with a carpenter's metal square.

If the door had dried out and closed very loosely, a large gap was visible between the door leaf and the frame, it is necessary to cut a thin strip from plywood or board and nail it to the end of the door being restored. Then we process the rail with a file or plane, precisely adjusting the dimensions.

You can strengthen the door leaf with metal corners. But so that the door does not lose its attractiveness, you should pay attention to the decorative carved corners and install them (nail them with thin nails or fix them with self-tapping screws) after painting the canvas. Don't forget to purchase a new door handle that stylistically matches the curly corners.

Replacing cracked glass

Cracked or simply outdated cloudy glass is not difficult to replace with your own hands. In its place, you can install a new one, for example, matte or transparent, tinted or with a sandblasted pattern, embossed or smooth, colored or plain.

Note! If the glass has a thickness of 10 mm (triplex), then replacing it is impractical. Firstly, it is very expensive, and secondly, it is almost impossible for an inexperienced person to cope with such a task on their own.

Case 1. Glass fixed with glazing beads

The easiest way is to replace glass secured with glazing beads. It is enough to dismantle them and then remove the glass by hand. We arm ourselves with pliers and a metal spatula. We pry up the glazing bead with a spatula, and use pliers to carefully pull out the nails.

Use a chisel or knife to clean the glass bed. We take measurements. If the opening is non-standard, we make a figured pattern from cardboard. At the same time, we take into account that the size of the glass should be slightly smaller than the opening. We wipe the glass with a soapy sponge, dry it with a clean rag, transfer the design from the pattern and cut it.

Attention! Wear gloves to avoid cutting your hands. Carry out work on a flat surface with a working glass cutter.

We treat the perimeter of the glass opening with sealant, after which we insert the cut piece, saw new glazing beads with a jigsaw and fasten them with thin nails.

Case 2. The glass has a hidden fixation

If the glass has a hidden fixation, you will have to disassemble the door, unscrewing the bolts, removing the old glass and inserting the new one. Silicone cannot be used in this case, since it will be impossible to replace it later. A significant disadvantage of replacing glass in such doors is that after assembly, the panel may lose its geometry and will require editing with a plane.

By the way, instead of glass, you can use an acrylic unbreakable mirror. It is quite light, durable, highly decorative and easy to cut.

Painting the door

A door prepared in accordance with all the rules can be painted. We carry out the work in two stages - applying a base layer of white paint and tinting.

We choose matte paint for wood, apply it with a spray gun or brush, moving the brush along the grain. Apply one layer, making sure that no smudges appear.

Important! If there is a glass insert, be sure to seal it with masking tape so as not to stain the surface with paint.

For tinting, choose glossy or matte paint of any color, for example, dark brown. We paint the canvas in the same way. If necessary, apply another layer, but only after the previous one has dried. The more layers of paint, the more saturated the shade will be. But don’t get carried away and create too thick a coating.

Important! Be sure to prepare and restore the door frame. Otherwise, the updated door will contrast unfavorably with the adjacent wooden surfaces.

When the paint has dried, you can apply a layer of glossy varnish or begin installing door handles.

Video - Master class on restoration of an interior door with a glass insert. Glass replacement

You can restore not only wooden ones, but also. Before work, it is advisable to remove the canvas and lay it horizontally. This will make the job easier.

Step 1. We dismantle or cover the door handle, peephole, and other fittings with masking tape.

Step 2. Use a wire brush or drill with an attachment to remove all traces of corrosion. Sand the surface with sandpaper (grit 80-150). We vacuum the canvas and treat it with a solvent.

Step 3. Treat the door with car polish. It is not recommended to use wood fillers as they do not adhere well to metal. Car polish will hide all dents and micro-scratches formed after cleaning the rust. Smooth out the applied polish with a spatula. The drying time of the composition is about 30-40 minutes.

Step 4. Polish the entire surface of the door with 400-grit sandpaper. Wipe the door with a clean damp cloth, and then degrease using a grease remover.

Step 5. Apply an anti-corrosion primer for metal to the door. It is convenient to use a roller and a narrow brush. After the primer layer has completely dried, we sand the canvas again with fine-grained sandpaper.

Step 6. Paint the door with metal paint. There can be several layers, but each subsequent layer is applied only after the previous ones have dried. To apply paint we use a roller and brushes or a spray gun. Don't forget about gloves and a respirator.

Similarly, we clean and paint the door frame, then remove the masking tape, install the fittings and hang the door in its rightful place.

In this way, you can not restore the entire surface of the door, but only a small area, but it is important to choose tone-on-tone paint.

How to laminate an interior door with film

To cover doors, it is better not to use cheap PVC film, but to give preference to the durable “self-adhesive” D-C-FIX. This film is guaranteed to last more than 10 years, will not fade in the sun and will not wear out.

The film is sold in rolls with a width of 45, 90 and 67.5 cm. The length of the roll is 15 m. The average retail price of this German film is 1,700 rubles. From a huge assortment, it’s not difficult to choose an option with imitation wood, stone, abstract or other patterns that suit a specific interior.

The film should be glued carefully, with someone's help. It is advisable to cut according to patterns, and immediately remove small bubbles with a wide plastic spatula. If the bubble does not go away, you can puncture it with a thin needle. For better plasticity, the film can be heated with a hairdryer.

Note! can be restored using adhesive-based veneer. We press the material to the canvas and heat it with an iron. We cut off the excess. We leave the restored door leaf for a while, pressing the glued veneer with sandbags.

Doors sooner or later lose their original appearance. Therefore, in order to return them to their former luster, the least expensive option would be - door restoration. We can not make all doors “new”, because... Some don’t make sense to restore at all – it’s cheaper to buy new ones.

Price

from 5000 rub.

Price door restoration in the workshop depends on the amount of relief on the canvas, the color you want to paint it and the type of varnish you choose.

Price door restoration "at home" depends on the amount of damage - chips and scratches and their size

We would like to immediately note that only minor cosmetic repairs of the door can be done on site; complete restoration can only be done in the workshop.

Send a request and we will call you back This does not oblige you to anything.

Which doors are subject to restoration?

You can make new ones out of old doors only if:

  • wooden doors– they are heavy because made from real solid wood;
  • veneered– these are doors whose base (solid or MDF) is lined with a thin cut of wood (veneer). These doors have a very beautiful wood pattern;

The listed door options, no matter how old they are, can be converted from old to new.

Modern hollow doors, laminated or covered with a film with an imitation of wood pattern - there is no point in restoring them! It can be done - but it's cheaper to buy new ones.

The exception is more expensive interior doors with a relief coating such as eco-veneer, but they are subject to only partial restoration - if there are small chips or scratches. This can be done at home, read on…

Making doors at home " so that they are like new" - it is forbidden. You can eliminate a couple of scratches and chips. If the entire door is scratched and worn, go to the workshop!

You send photos of the door and damage. We assess its condition and give you an answer with the cost of the work.

The price for such work is from 5,000 rubles, because Otherwise, it is simply not profitable for the master to work on the road, but it is easier to work in the workshop. This is due to the fact that not everyone is capable of performing such work.

Therefore, if you accidentally damaged the door (chip, scratch), but in general the doors look good, this option for cosmetic door repair is yours.

We updated the paintwork on these doors and made glazing from several sections instead of large glass. And they installed them.

Restoring doors in a workshop

Only in a workshop can you put old wooden doors, door frames and trim in order. This is due to several reasons:

  1. Removing old paintwork and sanding. Without this work, it is impossible to turn old doors into new ones - the old coating is removed, chips and cracks are repaired, and the surface is carefully sanded. This, respectively, is dust and noise.
  2. Painting– for high-quality painting of a door, a compressor and a spray gun are required. It is unlikely that your neighbors will be happy if the compressor starts working behind the wall. I don’t think we need to mention the smell of varnish and paint.
  3. Time. When performing the above stages of work, a certain amount of time must pass. For example, a door has been sanded and primed - it dries before painting, and each layer of varnish must dry before applying the next.
  4. Tool– I think you will agree that bringing home all the necessary tools and consumables for restoration is not the best idea.

When the doors are cleared of the old coating, chips and cracks are repaired, and the geometry is restored, we prime the door leaf before painting.

A door, wooden or veneered, can be repainted in any color, which is what our customers often order. Therefore, we tried to describe this process in as much detail as possible, because... It depends on him what result you get in the end.

You choose the color of the future coating with a specialist in a paint store, because... It is very important that you choose and approve the color. This is the only way you will get what you want.

Why can't you choose a color in the workshop?

  • Because stain or enamel is purchased specifically for a specific order in a specialized store.
  • It is tinted in the desired color using professional equipment.
  • After which the paint and varnish materials are used for specific doors.
  • There is no point in leaving it - because... there is an expiration date and it is not a fact that it can be used for another order.

Painting doors white and custom colors (green, blue)

The most expensive option.

If painting doors with stains of various wood colors costs the same, then painting “white”, “cafe with milk”, “ivory” costs 30% more than the total cost and there are several reasons for this:

  1. It is very difficult to paint in light colors, because... any speck of dust will be visible on the surface.
  2. Doors are painted with enamel, and it costs 2-2.5 times more than stain.
  3. Stains of non-standard colors (green, blue, red, etc.) are rarely used - that’s why they are more expensive.

When painting, we use only Italian stains and Renner and SayerLack enamel.

Varnishing of doors

After the doors are painted, the surface must be protected from external influences and the doors must be given a finished decorative look. To do this, we use varnish - which one depends on you:

  • matte, semi-matte, etc.;
  • glossy (according to gloss levels);
  • wear-resistant;

To obtain gloss, the surface must be polished and this is additional work.

Doors can be coated with regular varnish, but wear-resistant varnish will resist damage more effectively - it costs more.

We apply the varnish in 3 layers to obtain a high-quality coating. In restoration work we use only Italian varnishes Renner and SayerLack.

Special effects on the doors

Most popular:

  1. Brushing– using a metal brush to remove soft wood fibers from the door leaf. As a result, we get a beautiful relief surface and a clear wood grain.
  2. Patina– a different color is used on the panel and other relief parts to emphasize the relief of the door.

Restoration of door frames and trims

Be sure to do this!

Firstly, a beautiful new door is unlikely to look good with an old, shabby door frame and peeling trim.

Secondly, it is impossible to perfectly match the new color and shade of the door leaf to the old paint on the door frame and trim. They will still be slightly different.

Dismantling, delivery and installation

Many people forget about this point when they ask about the cost of door restoration.

Of course, you can remove the doors yourself, dismantle the door frame and bring it to our workshop, and then pick it up and install it. In this case, the price for restoration of the door frame and trim will be 15000 rub. per set.

If it is necessary to carry out all the listed work (dismantling, delivery, installation), i.e. " turnkey door restoration» - 18000 rub/door set.

What does the price consist of?

If you have a “standard paneled door” without a bunch of carved elements in the form of angels, grapes and other curlicues, the cost of restoring the door set (leaf, frame, trim) is – 15000 rub.

Turnkey restoration work including dismantling, delivery to the workshop and back + installation of doors in place – 18000 rub/door set.

At first glance, the price is quite high, but everyone forgets about:

  1. Cost of consumables - chemicals for removing old paint, sandpaper for sanding, primer, paint and varnish are about half the cost!
  2. Workers who perform installation/dismantling, delivery and other unskilled work such as sanding also want to eat.
  3. The work of a master to eliminate chips, cracks and paint.

Isn't it easier to buy new wooden doors?

Simpler - maybe, but the price difference is almost 2 times!

A door set of wooden doors made of solid pine starts from 25,000. Exactly the kit! Therefore, when you are offered wooden doors at a price of 20,000 rubles, ask whether the price includes the door frame, extensions and platbands.

Add (from 2500 rub.) and you will get about 30,000 for 1 set.

Where to order

Despite their unlimited service life, they wear out quite quickly. The material suffers from deformation and drying out, coatings wear off or become faded.

You can replace such canvases with new ones, but this is a big expense, a waste of time for replacement, and subsequent repair work after their installation.

Therefore, the easiest way is to put these structures in order yourself, that is, give them a second life by updating their coating and eliminating defects. How to restore old doors? More details later in the article.

In order to restore doors correctly and efficiently, you need to know how it is done.

Typically, interior fabrics suffer from mechanical stress and moisture.

Plastic varieties are more prone to scratches.

To make them invisible, they must be gently polished.

  • Painting. A wooden door or one with veneer inserts is easiest to varnish or paint. It is better to paint a wooden surface using a special brush or spray. A wooden surface should be painted and varnished by brushing along the fibers, then the material will lie smoothly, filling all the unevenness, chips and other defects.
  • Decoration. To give the updated canvas brightness, you can use other shades to create a new image. You can paint the canvas with one color, and the protruding parts with another, contrasting with the main selected shade. If the surface is smooth, then it is recommended to use carved slats made of wood or polyurethane, gluing them to the surface to be treated, after painting them in a suitable color.
  • Pasting using rolled wallpaper, colored paper or fabric. They often offer to stick special photo wallpapers onto a smooth canvas, which are sold in stores or can be easily purchased online. The design can be styled to match the room. For the nursery, drawings and reproductions from children's magazines are selected. For the kitchen, choose pages with dishes or vegetables and fruits. Before gluing paper sheets, they must be kept in water, then PVA glue is applied to the entire sheet and glued to the canvas, smoothed thoroughly. After the paper and glue have dried, the surface is coated with colorless varnish to preserve the work longer. In the same way, you can cover the surface of the old material with fabric.
  • Vinyl stickers. When gluing with vinyl stickers, it is not necessary to clean the canvas of old paint and eliminate irregularities. The stickers will hide all the defects, and you can paint them after that. They must be glued onto a degreased surface, after cleaning the area with an alcohol cleaner. Remove the backing from the sticker and apply it to the work area, smooth it out thoroughly. Only after this can you remove the film protecting the front side.
  • Cereal decorations. An original way to decorate an old door is to depict drawings made from bulk materials. Rice and buckwheat are ideal for this. The grains should be glued using PVA glue or standard wallpaper. After the drawing has dried well, the canvas is covered with several layers of colorless varnish. Dry cereal, and even under a layer of varnish, is stored for a very long time.

With a little effort and imagination, there will be no need to figure out how to restore old doors at home. Updated interior doors will add warmth and comfort to your home, and also improve the interior of the apartment.

Updating an old door with glass

How to restore old doors with glass is not an idle question at all.

Glass becomes cloudy over time, acquires scratches, and therefore when updating it must be restored or replaced with a new one.

To remove old glass, you need to carefully remove the glazing beads that hold it in place.

You can replace the glass with a modern one: frosted, corrugated, colored, with a pattern or photo printing.

To correctly insert new glass into the door leaf, you must do the following:

  • Measure the parameters of the opening in the door leaf where the glass will be inserted.
  • Cut the glass to the required size so that it can fit securely into the opening, for which it must be 5 mm shorter than the required size on each side. To cut out a piece you will need a glass cutter and a metal ruler.
  • Insert the glass into the opening, previously treated with sealant, and secure it with glazing beads, securing them with thin nails.

Glass with hidden fixation is more difficult to insert; it will require complete disassembly with unscrewing the bolts in order to remove the old part and also insert the new one. The negative aspect of such a replacement is the possibility of losing the correct dimensions of the canvas. In this case, it is necessary to straighten it using a plane.

If you insert old glass, it must be brought back to normal. Clean the old one with a scraper, acetone or blade. Polish small scratches using toothpaste.

Renew the glass with a film with a pattern, paint it or make a stained glass window on it. It is necessary to use fresh glazing beads and replace the fittings with new parts.

Instead of glass, you can insert an acrylic unbreakable mirror. It is light and durable, easy to cut and highly decorative. Then the door will look like new and will delight residents for a long time.

Fiberboard canvases

This canvas is slightly different from working with wooden surfaces. The thickness of the fiberboard surface reaches only 4 mm, so it is necessary to remove paint from it with extreme caution.

You cannot use a blowtorch for this - you can use an iron, wrapping it in a towel if you don’t have a hair dryer.

After sanding, the canvas is either varnished or painted with new paint. But there is a restoration method that allows you to turn a thin canvas into a natural wooden door - this is veneering the canvas.

Veneer parts are sold in special stores. You can glue it using an iron, heating the surface, because it already has an adhesive base.

You should act carefully so as not to overheat and burn. The glued parts can be treated with stain and varnished. You can decorate a simple door by gluing relief strips onto its surface.

We should not forget about the restoration of the door frame - it must correspond to the updated canvas. By replacing the fittings with new, more modern ones, you can increase the service life of the door.

Plastic products

Most assume that it will last forever and its dazzling snow-white appearance will not fade. However, even plastic products will eventually require replacement or restoration.

An old plastic door can be restored in several ways:

  • Painting the door. First you need to remove the old protective film from the plastic. Then wash the surface well using special products. The main difficulty in applying paint to plastic is that the liquid cannot be applied in its pure form. You should add a little hardener to the paint and then filter it. Paint is applied to the surface of plastic products using a spray gun in one layer. Next, let the paint dry and install the door in place.
  • Vinyl film sticker. If you don’t have the opportunity or desire to paint, you can stick vinyl film on the old door by choosing the appropriate pattern and color. To ensure high-quality gluing of the film, the surface of the plastic must be degreased and then washed with soapy water. Apply the film to a clean and dry surface and smooth it, after a few seconds you can remove the white base.
  • Veneer covering. Also treat the surface of the door and glue the veneer parts onto it using a hot iron. This option is acceptable and reliable. Natural material lasts longer than artificial panels.

Don’t forget to update the door frame, because it cannot be replaced; gaps may form between the frame and the door leaf. The fittings also need to be replaced and the door will be like new.

What about metal?

You can update not only the interior doors, but also the entrance doors made of metal. To do this, it should be removed and placed on a horizontal, flat surface, this will make it more convenient to work. Then execute in the following sequence:

  • Remove or cover with construction tape the fittings: peephole, handle and other components.
  • Use a drill or wire brush to clean areas damaged by corrosion. Sand the surface of the canvas with coarse sandpaper, remove dust with a vacuum cleaner and treat the canvas with a solvent.
  • Treat the surface with a special polish compound, but intended for cars. Putty cannot be used for wooden products - it gives poor adhesion to the metal surface. Car polish will repair all dents and scratches that occurred during the rust removal process. Give a smooth surface using a spatula and let the canvas dry for 30-40 minutes.
  • Polish the restored surface with fine sandpaper, wipe with a damp cloth and degrease using a special construction grease remover.
  • Prime the surface with a metal primer designed to combat corrosion. It is convenient to apply it with a roller or narrow brush. Let it dry and sand again with fine-grit sandpaper.
  • Paint the surface with the chosen paint in 2-3 layers - it is important to achieve the desired rich result. Each new layer is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. For painting it is recommended to use a roller, brush or spray gun. You should protect yourself from paint exposure by wearing gloves and a respirator.

The door frame should be restored in the same way.

Then remove the fittings from the tape or reinstall them and hang the door in its place.

If only a section of the canvas has been damaged, you can renew only that area, although this will require careful selection of paint according to tone.

Restoring old doors with your own hands is an interesting and exciting job.

You can choose an acceptable canvas, choose the appropriate material and get creative with the decor.

In addition, you can save significantly on replacing doors, and this is an important fact for the family budget.
