Materials

Before you make a mini gun, prepare everything necessary materials for work:

  • Piezoelectric element from a lighter;
  • A small piece of any thin wire;

Making a cannon

Follow these instructions:

  1. Make a hole in the lid of the jar with a diameter equal to the diameter of your tube.
  2. Make two small holes in the side of the jar itself.
  3. Insert the wire from the piezoelectric element into one of the holes.
  4. Insert a piece of wire into the second hole and connect it to the end of the wire from the piezoelectric element.
  5. Insert the tube and wrap everything tightly with tape.
  6. Fill the combustion chamber with any highly flammable substance.
  7. Insert what you will shoot into the tube and press the piezo element button.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the assembly process, and such simple entertainment will help pass the time at home or at work, as well as amuse those around you or your own son.

Therefore, if you are hunting, you can make a cannon with your own hands and design it to look like any antique weapon you like. In addition, such a gun can be used even in theatrical productions. Of course, building a real combat cannon at home is impractical, but making a small gun for fireworks will not be difficult. But in this case, you also need to be careful, since even a homemade gun can shoot no worse than its factory prototype. It is for this reason that when showing off or showing off your new invention, it is recommended to remember safety precautions.

So, first of all, you should get a tractor cylinder, which is considered a completely ready-made base for a salute gun. If it is not there, any other small cylinder with one plugged end and an oil pipe outlet will do. It is necessary to make a cleaning rod. To create it, a wooden rod with the appropriate diameter is used, which is clearly adjusted to the outer diameter of the trunk. As for the length of the ramrod, it must certainly be 0.5 meters longer than the length of the barrel. A metal can is filled with a powder mixture. Using a wooden shelf (for example, a branch), the oil pipe hole at the beginning of the cylinder is clogged. Next, the cylinder is installed in vertical position so that its “barrel” faces upward. You need to pour the powder mixture into it a centimeter above the level of the hole in the oil pipe. Using a cleaning rod, be sure to compact the mixture well.

Next, the material is taken and rolled up in several layers and, together with a cleaning rod, is pushed into the barrel until it stops. It is recommended to compact the charge at all costs. A couple of good and well-aimed blows on the ramrod will help to do this. In this situation, a piece of fabric will act as a so-called wad. Now you need to remove the wood plug from the oil pipe. The gun is rightfully considered fully loaded. Picking up a piece steel wire, you need to make a bracket that looks like L-shape, the short side of which should be approximately a couple of times longer than the height of the oil pipe. This edge is slightly sharpened into a cone shape. The entry of the bracket into the recess of the pipe must be completely free. If we talk about the long side, equal to about 100 centimeters, then it is optionally equipped with a handle in its outline resembling a loop made of the same wire.

Already before firing the shot, you need to safely install the cylinder in an inclined position. It is recommended to do this at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizon so that the direction of the fire does not touch living objects or anything that can easily ignite. The gun is fixed on a special “slingshot” made of wood, which is thoroughly driven into the ground, which will provide the breech of the gun with excellent support on a wooden stake driven into the ground. After that, using a fire, you should heat the edge of the metal bracket, which is sharpened. It is very important to act quickly here. The already heated bracket is inserted into the hole in the pipe. At the time of the first checks of a homemade weapon this procedure It's best to do it from cover. As soon as the gun is fired, it is necessary to give some time so that the barrel can become cold. It is also worth carefully examining it for chips, cracks and other defects.

If there are no shortcomings, you can move on to the decorative design of the gun. Initially, its trunk is completely cleaned and degreased. As a rule, the most original appearance Such a weapon is considered to be in the antique style. To give the gun a historical look, the hydraulic cylinder is wrapped with rope, which is first held in epoxy resin. Thanks to this method, decorative tides or thickenings are created. As soon as the resin has completely hardened, the resulting structure is treated with sandpaper, and then bronze paint is applied. In this case, you can use bitumen varnish or bronze enamel intended for cars. The gun carriage can be made of wood. If it is planned to create a carriage, then in the process of wrapping the hydraulic cylinder with a rope, it is necessary to immediately fix and wrap an additional intersecting metal tube that serves as the axis of rotation.

Since this gun is intended solely for launching fireworks, it must be loaded correctly. For example, using any destructive elements to load a weapon is strictly prohibited. This is due to the fact that the gun barrel is not designed for such a charge. If this rule is neglected, the cannon will simply burst and all the work to create it will be in vain. Also, experts strongly do not recommend using so-called smokeless gunpowder and all kinds of mixtures based on Berthollet salt in guns of this type. Typically, this can cause a fairly powerful explosion. But during decoration, you need to carefully ensure that even the slightest drop epoxy resin did not hit the barrel and the hole sank. And finally, it is worth mentioning that if the model of the future homemade cannon is small in size, the wad for it can be made not from a piece of fabric, but from ordinary paper.

Sometimes, for historical reconstructions or just for fun, you may need a more serious weapon than a sword or bow. If you wish, you can even create a cannon with your own hands, and decorate it to match almost any historical weapon. Of course, it is impractical to make a real fire fighting cannon in an apartment, but making a small fireworks part or element from paper is quite possible.

Preparing tools

In the course of creating a military weapon, you will need materials such as:

  1. Hydraulic cylinder (automotive or tractor) Not large sizes with one plugged end and an outlet for the oil pipeline.
  2. Epoxy resin.
  3. A piece of rope and
  4. Wooden rod.
  5. Pliers.
  6. Black powder or a homemade mixture based on saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal.
  7. A piece of thick cotton or linen fabric.

How to make a cannon? Let's get started

In fact, a tractor or car cylinder will be a ready-made barrel for our homemade gun. Therefore, there is no need to perform any additional actions (welding, soldering, etc.) with it. It is better to make an additional cleaning rod. To do this, you need to take a wooden rod and cut it along the length of the trunk, exceeding it by 50 centimeters, precisely adjusting it to internal diameter guns.

The powder mixture is poured into a separate tin can. Using a branch or some other wooden stick, the hole in the oil pipe is closed at the base of the cylinder, and the barrel itself is installed vertically with the muzzle up. The powder mixture is poured inside it one centimeter above the level of the nozzle hole. The homemade “TNT” is then compacted with a ramrod.

But that is not all. How to make a cannon next? After this, you will need to roll up several pieces and push it into the barrel until it stops. This is done using the same cleaning rod. They should also compact the charge by giving the mixture several blows. In this case, the piece of fabric will serve as a wad. After this, a wooden plug is pulled out from the oil pipe of the hydraulic cylinder.

The next step is to bend an L-shaped bracket from metal wire. As for the dimensions, the short part of this element at the outlet should be 2 times longer than the oil pipe and slightly sharpened to a cone. Ideally, the staple fits into the hole without any problems.

The long part of the wire (700-1000 millimeters) is additionally equipped with a handle. It can be made in the form of a loop from the same wire.

Getting ready to shoot

Before firing, the cylinder is set at an angle of 45 degrees to the horizon in a direction that is safe for people. Remember that there should be no other flammable objects in the line of fire. The cannon itself is mounted on a wooden “slingshot”, previously driven into the ground so that the device rests against the stake when fired.

The pointed end of the metal bracket must be heated over a fire and quickly inserted into the hole in the pipe. If the gun is launched for the first time, then it is best to do it from cover - although the device is homemade, it shoots no worse than its factory-made counterparts. Therefore, before making a dynamite cannon, always follow the safety rules. After the shot is fired, inspect the barrel for cracks and other defects. If none are found, you can safely proceed to decorative design guns. In this case, the barrel must be cleaned and degreased in advance.

Additional decorations

To make the gun look more natural, wrap a rope soaked in water around the hydraulic cylinder.

Even when decorating, you can create various thickenings or tides. After the resin has hardened finished design processed with coarse sandpaper and painted bronze. This can be done with regular or bronze enamel.

How to make a paper cannon?

Before we make a cannon, we first need to make a carriage. To do this, you need to take several pieces of paper, and it is best to use thin cardboard. The layout of the carriage should be drawn on it. The resulting pattern is carefully cut out with scissors and glued together.

The roller is inserted between the side wall of the upper part of the carriage. Next, we will need to secure it - to do this, take two nails and drive them into both sides of the device. Thanks to this, you can aim the weapon up and down yourself.

A coil is installed to the lower side elements of the carriage. It is important to remember that the edges of this part must be jagged. An elastic band is threaded through the spool. This way you will not only aim the gun barrel yourself, but also set the wheels in motion.

A match is placed under the rubber band. Since it will turn, secure it with pins. The second end of the rubber band is passed through the hole in the spool, and then through a wax ring. Then it is threaded into the side hole of the carriage. Before you make a paper cannon, think about the lever that will turn the reel. To do this, a wooden pin is placed under the elastic band, and a nail is installed at the end of the coil where the pins were inserted.

A trunk is made from a hollow tube. An elastic band is attached to the front and sides. The barrel is mounted on a bolster.

About the trigger

For the manufacture of trigger mechanism take a thin twig and thread it into the trunk. Make a cutout at one end and add an elastic band. A pea is placed in the trunk. To make the gun fire, insert a notch into the elastic band, pull it tight and release it.

To set the device in motion, wind the threaded rubber band through the spool.

Hello. Today we will build a Gauss cannon at home using parts that can easily be found in local stores. Using capacitors, a switch and a few other parts, we will create a launcher that can use electromagnetism to launch small nails up to a distance of about 3 meters. Let's get started!

Step 1: Watch the video

Step 2: Gathering the necessary materials

For the project you will need:

  1. 8 large capacitors. I used 3,300uF 40V. The key point The point here is that the lower the voltage, the less danger, so look for options in the region of 30 - 50 Volts. As for capacity, the more the better.
  2. One high current circuit breaker
  3. One coil of 20 turns (I twisted mine from 18awg wire)
  4. Copper sheet and/or thick copper wire

Step 3: Glue the capacitors together

Take the capacitors and glue them together so that the positive terminals are closer to the center of the glue. First glue them into 4 groups of 2 pieces. Then glue two groups together, resulting in 2 groups of 4 capacitors. Then place one group on top of the other.

Step 4: Assembling a group of capacitors

Now take the positive terminals and connect them to each other and then solder them to the copper pad. The overlay can serve as a thick copper wire or leaf.

Step 5: Solder the copper pads

Use directed heat if necessary (slight industrial dryer), heat the copper strips and solder the capacitor terminals to them.

Step 6: Solder the Negative Terminals of the Capacitors

Take another thick conductor, I used an insulated copper lead with a large cross-section, removing it in in the right places isolation.

Bend the wire so that it covers the entire distance of our group of capacitors as efficiently as possible.

Solder it in the right places.

Step 7: Prepare the projectile

Next you need to prepare a suitable projectile for the reel. I wound my reel around the bobbin. I used a small straw as a muzzle. Therefore, my projectile must fit into the straw. I took the nail and cut it to about 3cm long, leaving the sharp part.

Step 8: Find a suitable switch

I then needed to find a way to dump the charge from the capacitors onto the coil. Most people use rectifiers (SCRs) for such needs. I decided to take a simpler approach and found a switch that worked when high strength current.

There are three current ratings on the switch: 14.2A, 15A, and 500A. My calculations showed a maximum force of about 40A at a peak lasting about a millisecond, so it should have worked.

THE NOTE. Do not use my switching method if your capacitors are larger. I pushed my luck and it all worked out fine, but you don't want a breaker to blow because you ran 300A through a breaker rated for 1A.

Step 9: Winding the Reel

We're almost done collecting electromagnetic gun. Time to wind the reel.

I tried three different coils and found that about 20 turns insulated wire 16 or 18 awg standards work best. I used an old bobbin, wrapped some wire around it and threaded a plastic straw through it, sealing one end of the straw with hot glue.

Now that you have all the pieces ready, put them together. If you have any problems, follow the diagram.

Step 11: Fire Safety


Congratulations! We made the Grasse cannon with our own hands. Use a charger to charge your capacitors to near maximum voltage. I charged my 40V setup to 38V.

Load the projectile into the tube and press the button. The current will flow to the coil and it will shoot a nail.
