Bookshelves: drawings, photos. How to make bookshelves: step-by-step DIY

Modern bookshelves not only fulfill their intended purpose, but are also part of the interior, adding zest and emphasizing the design of the room.

You can make bookshelves with your own hands from scrap materials; you just need to use your imagination and have minimal skills in working with wood.

How to make bookshelves.

To make a wooden shelf you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Chipboard, board or MDF.
  • Fiberboard or plywood (if the shelf has a back wall).
  • Furniture screws.
  • Plastic plugs for furniture screws.
  • Edge tape (if chipboard or MDF is used).
  • Sandpaper.
  • Drill with drill (the diameter of the drill is slightly smaller than the thickness of the screws).
  • Knob key for furniture screws.
  • Square, tape measure, pencil.
  • Fine-toothed hacksaw.

Furniture screws, plugs and key.

Drawing of a bookshelf.

The photo shows several drawings of bookshelves.

Making a bookshelf step by step.

The first step is to make a sketch of the future bookshelf and make drawings. Next, the shelf manufacturing process is as follows:

According to the drawings, you need to cut the material; this can be done with an ordinary wood hacksaw with fine teeth. If boards are used as the material, then sawing them will not be difficult; if the shelves are made of chipboard or MDF, then sawing such material is much more difficult. Things will go faster if you cut with an electric jigsaw, but if you have never held a jigsaw in your hands, it will be quite difficult to saw off smoothly.

Using a tape measure and a square, we measure and mark the cutting lines with a pencil, sawing off strictly along the line. The ends of the cuts must be even.

When all the parts of the shelf are ready, you need to make holes in the side boards for fastening with furniture screws. From the ends of the side parts you need to measure a distance of half the thickness of the board and draw a line with a pencil.

Now you need to make marks on the lines for the holes, retreating 50 mm from the edges of the board for screws. We apply the ends of the boards to the joints, take a drill with a drill, the diameter of the drill should be slightly less than the thickness of the furniture screw, and make holes the length of the furniture screw. We attach the ends of the main boards and drill.

We assemble the shelves with furniture screws, screw in the screws with a multi-faceted wrench, and cover the screw heads with plastic covers to match the color of the wood.

If you used chipboard to make the shelves, then the edges need to be sealed with self-adhesive edge tape to match the color of the chipboard.

If you need to make a back wall for a bookshelf, you will need a piece of chipboard or thin plywood. You need to attach the shelf to a sheet of chipboard, outline the contours of the shelf, cut out the chipboard with a hacksaw and secure it to the shelf with small nails.

As you can see, making bookshelves with your own hands is not at all difficult, and with a creative approach you can make a truly exclusive thing for your interior.

The modern world with future technologies and high-speed Internet allows us to devote less and less time to such an important activity as reading books. If you consider yourself to be a fan of real paper publications, you have probably thought more than once about setting up a space where you could store all your books. And it’s much nicer when this shelf is created by you personally. Making a bookshelf with your own hands is a simple task, but it requires minimal tool skills. We will give you some tips on how you can create such a stand for your collection.

Some tips on how to make a bookshelf with your own hands

Where to begin

Many will say that the easiest way is to go and buy a ready-made book shelf for yourself. But this way you lose part of its exclusivity, because you yourself will become a designer. If you are immediately stumped when choosing a shape or color, answer yourself a few questions:

  • what do you need the shelf for? To change the interior? To fit all your books? To list only books of a certain series or author? Or just to let your guests see the entire collection?
  • How many “floors” will the book shelf have? Here you need to carefully consider the size of the floors and the thickness of the base itself.
  • How many books do you plan to place on the shelf? The answer to this question determines the material from which you will create the shelf. After all, if you plan to pile a lot of publications on it, you need to create a solid foundation.
  • Where will the shelf be attached? There are two options - against the wall or. Will you need additional accessories and mechanisms?
  • And the last thing is the final design of the shelf. You've probably already imagined it more than once, so you can confidently make a choice.

As in any business, here you will need materials and tools. As for the source materials, it all depends on what kind of shelf you decide to make.

Fabric shelf

To have such a wall shelf in your apartment, you will need:

  • a pair of small radius pipes (useful);
  • mounting brackets;
  • textile;
  • seamstress tools.

First, sew the edges of the fabric using a sewing machine. Install brackets on the wall and attach pipes to them. All you have to do is roll the ends of the fabric into a ring, the diameter of which will be sufficient to thread the pipe into it. You put the fabric on the pipes and that’s it - the shelf is ready.

For such an unusual shelf you will need:

  • thick rope or rope (several pieces of different lengths);
  • wooden boards;
  • fastenings with which installation will be carried out;
  • drill, drill bits;
  • paint, varnish or polish.

Take your boards that will later become wall shelves and make holes at equal distances from the edges. Secure a rope or thick rope to the ceiling, then thread the ends through the holes in the board. Fix the board temporarily and tie a knot under each hole. That's all. Make a few more and you will have original exclusive decorative elements.

Classic wooden shelf

Let's take a closer look at the process of creating a standard book shelf. To do this you will need:

  • board (width - 20 cm, thickness - 2 cm);
  • plywood (fibreboard, thickness - up to 5 mm);
  • drill, drill bits;
  • jigsaw (preferably electric);
  • hacksaw;
  • screwdriver, self-tapping screws;
  • level or square;
  • screws for furniture, plugs for them.

As you understand, instead of wooden boards, you can use any materials, such as chipboard or plastic.

Let's get started

First of all, clear your workspace of all unnecessary things. It is better that there is nothing left in the work area except tools and material.

Take the necessary measurements and sketch out a drawing of the future shelf. Try to be as accurate as possible in your calculations. After this, you can begin sawing the base material. Here you will need a jigsaw. If you are not sure that you will do everything correctly with your own hands, you can order such a service at places where wood is sold. If you decide, then use a square to outline the cut line. First, attach it to one side of the board and draw a perpendicular line to the opposite end. This procedure must be done on all sides of the board.

Make sure that the jigsaw or hacksaw moves strictly along the line, since this part will be the end of the shelf. Next, measure a distance from it equal to the height of the shelf - this will be its side wall. All cuts must be cleaned with sandpaper. This way you will eliminate their roughness and unevenness.

Next you need to make holes to attach the side boards to the base. To do this, measure a distance from the edge of the side board that is equal to half its thickness, step back 5 cm from the perpendicular edge and drill a through hole. Do the same on the other side. Use a drill bit that has a smaller diameter than the screws.

To determine the hole depth for the top and bottom bookshelves, subtract the thickness of the board from the length of the screw. Now measure the centers of the holes on these boards and follow the procedure. Next, it’s just a matter of small things - using a screwdriver, assemble all the parts of the shelf into one structure.

If you want to create a shelf with a back wall, use plywood or fiberboard for this. For aesthetic reasons, it is better to cover it from the inside with film or self-adhesive paper. You can install such a book shelf on the wall using self-tapping screws or small nails.

Treat your new shelf with mastic or varnish. Try making decoupage or craquelure. You can also decorate the shelf with doors. They are usually made of wood, plastic or glass. They will also protect books from moisture and dust.

After the first attempt, try to make a more complex shelf - a large multi-tiered, corner or asymmetrical shelf will become an original element of the interior of any room.

You should not buy into the low cost of modern chipboards. When they are created, toxic elements are used that are harmful to the human body. If you have no other choice, then treat the ends of the shelf with melamine edge. To do this, warm up the wood, apply an edge to it and run a hot iron over it. After this, excess parts of the edge can be easily removed with scissors or a knife. This way you will save yourself from the harmful effects of toxins, and the shelf will become more neat in appearance.

If you are making a book shelf in, choose only natural wood, as it is environmentally friendly. The finished design can be decorated with animal figures or cartoon characters. This process can be a great leisure time for you and your baby. Try decorating a shelf together. To do this, take cardboard, acrylic paints and double-sided tape.

From all of the above, we can conclude how to make a bookshelf with your own hands. To do this you only need to have imagination and desire. If you have ever tried to create such a shelf yourself, share your comments under this article.
