Prayers for the coming sleep with interpretation

Tropari

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; Because everyone is perplexed by the answer, we offer this prayer to the Master of sin: have mercy on us.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us. Finding no justification for ourselves, we sinners offer this prayer to You, as the Lord, have mercy on us.

Glory:

Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You; Do not be angry with us, do not remember our iniquities, but look upon us now as if you are gracious, and deliver us from our enemies; For Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; all works are done by Thy hand, and we call on Thy name.

Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You. Do not be very angry with us and do not remember our iniquities; but look down now, as the Merciful One, and deliver us from our enemies, for You are our God and we are Your people; We are all the work of Your hands and we call on Your name.

And now: Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who trust in You, so that we may not perish, but may be delivered from troubles by You: for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

And now: Open the doors of Mercy to us, Blessed Mother of God, so that we who hope in You will not perish, but through You we will be delivered from troubles, for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Prayer 1, St. Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and King of every creature, who has vouchsafed me even at this hour to come, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And grant me, Lord, to pass through this dream in peace at night, so that, rising from my humble bed, I will please Your most holy name all the days of my life, and will trample the enemies of the flesh and the incorporeal that fight me. And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Eternal God and King of all creatures, who has deigned me to live to see this hour! Forgive me the sins that I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, Lord, my poor soul from all impurity of body and soul. And help me, Lord, to spend the coming night calmly, so that, getting up from my wretched bed, I can do what is pleasing to Your most holy name all the days of my life and defeat the physical and incorporeal enemies who attack me. And deliver me, Lord, from empty thoughts that defile me and evil passions. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever.
Amen.

In this prayer, we thank God for a well-spent day, asking Him for forgiveness of sins, saving us from all evil and good night. This prayer ends with the glorification of the Holy Trinity.

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ

To the Almighty, the Word of the Father, who is perfect himself, Jesus Christ, for the sake of Thy mercy, never be absent from me, Thy servant, but always in me
rest. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to the sedition of the serpent, and do not leave me to the desires of Satan, for the seed of aphids is in me. Thou, O Lord God worshiped, the Holy King, Jesus Christ, preserve me as I sleep with an unflickering light, Thy Holy Spirit, with whom Thou didst sanctify Thy disciples. Grant, O Lord, to me, Thy unworthy servant, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of reason of Thy Holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy passionless passion, preserve my thought with Thy humility, and uplift I am in time like Your praise. For Thou art glorified with Thy Beginningless Father and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Almighty, Word of the Father, Jesus Christ, being Himself perfect, according to Your great mercy, never leave me, Your servant, but always abide in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not give me over to the rebellious serpent and do not leave me to the will of Satan, for in me is the seed of destruction. You, Lord God, Whom you worship, Holy King, Jesus Christ, protect me during sleep with unfading light, Your Holy Spirit, with which You sanctified Your disciples. Grant, Lord, to me, Thy unworthy servant, too, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of understanding of Thy Holy Gospel, my soul with love for Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy suffering, alien to passion, preserve my thought with Thy humility . And raise me up at the proper time to glorify You. For You are glorified together with Your Father who has no beginning and the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Thy sinful servant, and forgive me the unworthy, and forgive me all that You have sinned today as a man, and moreover, not as a man, but also worse than cattle, my free sins and involuntary, known and unknown: those who are evil from youth and science, and those who are evil from impudence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or whom I will reproach; or slandered someone with my anger, or saddened someone, or became angry about something; either he lied, or he slept in vain, or he came to me as a beggar and despised him; or made my brother sad, or married, or whom I condemned; or became proud, or became proud, or became angry; or standing in prayer, my mind is moved by the wickedness of this world, or I think about corruption; either overeated, or drunk, or laughing madly; either I thought evil, or saw someone else’s kindness, and my heart was wounded by it; or dissimilar verbs, or laughed at my brother’s sin, but mine are countless sins; Either I didn’t pray for the sake of it, or I didn’t remember what other evil things I did, because I did more and more of these things. Have mercy on me, my Creator Master, Thy sad and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of Mankind, so that I may lie down in peace, sleep and rest, the prodigal, sinful and damned one, and I will bow and sing , and I will glorify Your most honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Your sinful servant, release and forgive me, unworthy, everything that I have sinned against You today as a man, and, moreover, not only as a man, but also worse livestock; and forgive me, the unworthy, all my sins, voluntary and involuntary, conscious and unconscious, committed since youth from evil deceit, hot temper and carelessness, and if I swore by Your name or blasphemed Him in my thoughts, or whom I reproached or slandered in my anger, or made me sad, or got angry because of something, or lied, or slept untimely, or despised the beggar who came to me, or saddened my brother, or stirred up quarrels, or condemned someone, or grew arrogant, or became proud, or became angry, or during prayer my mind strove for evil worldly thoughts, or had cunning thoughts, or overeated, or got drunk, or laughed madly, or thought evil, or, seeing someone else’s good, was wounded in my heart, or spoke obscene things, or laughed at my brother’s sin, while my sins are countless, or I was negligent in prayer, or I forgot everything else that I did that was evil, for my iniquities exceed those listed. Have mercy on me, my Creator and Master, Thy sad and unworthy servant, and resolve, and free, and forgive me, as the Good and Humane One, so that I, prodigal, sinful and unhappy, may lie down in peace, fall asleep and rest, bowing, singing and having glorified Your most honorable name with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and always and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 4, Saint Macarius the Great

What will I bring to Thee, or what will I repay to Thee, O most gifted Immortal King, generous and humane-loving Lord, since Thou hast brought me to the end of this past day, the conversion and salvation of my soul, by being lazy to please You, and having done nothing good? Be merciful to me, a sinner and naked of every good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and take away from me all the evil thoughts of this visible life. Forgive my sins, O One Sinless One, even those who have sinned this day, in knowledge and ignorance, in word, and deed, and thought, and with all my feelings. You Yourself, covering me, save me from every opposing situation with Your Divine power, and ineffable love for mankind, and strength.
Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Deign, Lord, to deliver me from the snare of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and overshadow me with the light of Your face, when You come in glory, and now make me sleep without condemnation, and keep the thoughts of Your servant without dreaming, and untroubled, and all the work of Satan take me away from me, and enlighten the intelligent eyes of my heart, so that I may not fall asleep. And send me an Angel of peace, guardian and mentor of my soul and body, that he may deliver me from my enemies; Yes, rising from my bed, I will bring you prayers of gratitude. Yes, Lord, hear me, Thy sinful and wretched servant, with your will and conscience; Grant that I have risen to learn from Thy words, and the despondency of demons is driven away from me, to be made by Thy Angels; may I bless Your holy name, and glorify, and glorify the Most Pure Mother of God Mary, Who hast given us sinners intercession, and accept this one praying for us; We see that He imitates Your love for mankind, and never ceases to pray. By that intercession, and the sign of the Honest Cross, and for the sake of all Thy saints, keep my poor soul, Jesus Christ our God, for Thou art holy and glorified forever.
Amen.

What will I bring to You or what will I reward You, Greatly Gifted Immortal King, Generous and Humane-loving Lord, for the fact that You, lazy in Your service and having done nothing good, brought me to the end of this past day, directing my soul to obedience and salvation. Be merciful to me, a sinner who has no good deed. Restore my fallen soul, defiled by countless sins, and turn away from me earthly sinful thoughts. You alone are sinless, forgive my sins committed before You on this day, consciously and unconsciously, in word, deed and thought and with all my feelings. You Yourself preserve me from every enemy attack, protecting me with Your Divine power, ineffable love for mankind and strength; God, blot out and forgive the multitude of my sins, have mercy on me, Lord, free me from the snares of the devil, save my suffering soul and shine upon me with the light of Your face when You come in Your glory. And now let me sleep in a sleep uncondemned and protect the thoughts of Your servant from dreams and confusion. Drive away the satanic action from me, enlighten the mental eyes of my heart, so that I do not fall asleep in the sleep of death. Send me an Angel of peace, a guardian and mentor to my soul and body, who delivers me from my enemies, so that when I get up from my bed, I offer you prayers of thanks. O Lord, hear me, Thy sinful and wretched servant. Grant me upon awakening with a clear conscience to learn Thy law, remove from me through Thy Angels demonic carelessness, in order to bless Thy holy name and glorify and praise the Most Pure Mother of God Mary, given to us sinners for protection; accept Her praying for us, for I know that She, imitating Your love for mankind, constantly prays for us. Through her intercession, the sign of the venerable Cross and through the prayers of all Your saints, preserve my poor soul, Jesus Christ our God, for You alone are Holy and Glorified forever. Amen.

Prayer 5

Lord our God, who have sinned in these days in word, deed and thought, as He is Good and Lover of Mankind, forgive me. Grant me a peaceful and serene sleep. Send Your guardian angel, covering and keeping me from all evil, for You are the guardian of our souls and bodies, and we send glory to You, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Lord our God, what I have sinned on this day in word, deed and thought, forgive me, as the Good and Humane One; grant me a peaceful sleep, free from the disturbance of passions; send Your guardian Angel, protecting and preserving me from all evil, for You are the Guardian of our souls and bodies, and we send glory to You, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

all dreams and dark pleasures except; restrain the desire of passions, extinguish the kindling of bodily rebellion. Grant us to live chastely in deeds and words; Yes, a virtuous life is receptive, Your promised good things will not fall away, for Blessed are You forever. Amen.

demonic To her, my Lord and Creator, do not want the death of a sinner, but as if he were converted and live, grant me conversion, the accursed and unworthy; take me away from the mouth of the destructive serpent, who yawns to devour me and bring me to hell alive. To her, my Lord, is my consolation, Who for the sake of the accursed one has clothed himself in corruptible flesh, pluck me from accursedness, and grant consolation to my more accursed soul. Plant in my heart to do Thy commandments, and forsake evil deeds, and receive Thy blessedness: for in Thee, O Lord, have I trusted, save me.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Your Most Honest Mother, Your disembodied Angels, as well as Your Prophet Forerunner and Baptist, the preaching apostles, the bright and victorious martyrs, the reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, deliver me from the present attack of demons. Oh, my Lord and Creator, who does not desire the death of a sinner, but awaits his conversion and life, grant conversion to me, the accursed and unworthy; take me out of the mouth of the destructive serpent, eager to devour me and bring me alive to hell. Inspire my heart to fulfill Your commands and leave evil deeds and receive Your blessedness, for in You, Lord, I trust, save me.

Prayer to the Mother of God, St. Peter of Studium

To Thee, O Most Pure Mother of God, I fall down and pray: Behold, O Queen, how I continually sin and anger Thy Son and my God, and many times when I repent, I find myself lying before God, and I repent in trembling: will the Lord strike me, and every hour again I create; I pray to this leader, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, to have mercy, strengthen me, and grant me good works. Believe me, my Lady Theotokos, for the Imam is by no means in hatred of my evil deeds, and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God; But we do not know, Most Pure Lady, from where I hate, I love, but I transgress what is good. Do not allow, O Most Pure One, my will to be fulfilled, for it is not pleasing, but may the will of Thy Son and my God be done: may He save me, and enlighten me, and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that I may cease from here from filthiness, and so on may I live as commanded Thy Son, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, with His Originless Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages, Amen.

Falling down to You, the Most Pure Mother of God, I, unfortunate one, pray: You know, Queen, how I constantly sin and anger Your Son and my God. And although I repent many times, I turn out to be a liar before God, and I repent again with fear, and immediately do the same again: will the Lord really strike me down? Knowing this, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, I pray that she will have mercy and strengthen me and teach me to do good. For you know, my Lady, Mother of God, that I completely abhor my evil deeds and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God, but I don’t know, Most Pure Lady, why I don’t do good, but do evil that I don’t want. Do not allow, Most Pure One, my evil will to be fulfilled, but let the will of Your Son and my God be done, Who will save me, enlighten me and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that from now on I will stop doing bad things, and the rest of the time I will live according to the commandments of Your Son, to whom belongs all glory, honor and power are with His Originless Father and His Most Holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Read prayers for the coming sleep

There is a Prayer Book that contains all the petitions, and these are the ones that need to be read before going to bed. For monks - Orthodox prayer book. You need to pray not only in the evenings, but also in the morning. Definitely every day. Take this with complete seriousness and responsibility.

If you have not prayed before, start with five prayers and add one more every ten days. Read intelligently, slowly, and think about every word. She must go sincerely and from a pure heart. There are times when you don’t have the energy or time to read the full rule. Remember that it is better to pray briefly and thoughtfully than in a hurry, “for show.” Such speed reading would be a big mistake.

Here is one of the petitions to the Lord for a good dream:

“Eternal God and King of every creature, who has made me worthy even at this hour, forgive me the sins I have committed this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, O Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen."

Prayers for the coming sleep with Andrey Tkachev

Who is Andrey Tkachev? From one thousand nine hundred and ninety-three to two thousand and five he was a priest in the St. George Church. Since two thousand and six he has been rector of the Kyiv Church of Agapit of the Pechersk; since two thousand and seven he has become rector of the stone church of Luke of Crimea. In two thousand and fourteen he moved to Russia to serve in the Church of the Resurrection of the Word.

Some know him from videos on the Internet, where a man gives various lectures, including prayers that are read before bed. This program helps you learn the Holy Scriptures. There are many prayers on the Internet that you can download for reference, including for the coming sleep. Read the petitions with Andrei Tkachev more than once and you will achieve a positive result.

A short prayer for the coming sleep

Prayer helps us in difficult times, whether we are awake or asleep. Often we sleep poorly because we anticipate a bad event or misfortune. Pray in your sleep too. It's possible. This way you can prevent trouble.

Small children often do not sleep soundly. The morning then begins with whims, and the parents are completely sleep-deprived. There is a way out in this situation. In order for the child to sleep peacefully and soundly, there is a prayer for the baby’s sleep to the Mother of God. She will save him from nightmares. After putting the baby to bed, the mother should read a petition to the head of the crib:

“Oh, Most Pure Lady Theotokos, Queen of heaven and earth, the highest angel and archangel and all creatures, the most honest, pure Virgin Mary, the Good Helper of the world, and affirmation for all people, and deliverance for all needs! You are our intercessor and representative, you are protection for the offended, joy for the grieving, refuge for the orphans, guardian for widows, glory for virgins, joy for those who cry, visitation for the sick, healing for the weak, salvation for sinners. Have mercy on us, Mother of God, and fulfill our request, for everything is possible through Your intercession: for glory befits You now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

Dear parents, poor sleep is often the cause of fear. Be kind, considerate and gentle. In case of fright, it is recommended to read a special plot for two to three weeks.

If the baby still sleeps restlessly, then most likely he has been jinxed. Then you should read.

After reading, you will see the result for yourself. The baby will wake up only once at night to eat. When your child grows up, teach him to pray on his own.

Prayer for the coming sleep Optina Pustyn

This is an appeal to the Higher Powers of the Optina elders from the monastery. Reverend Joseph says that if you are not able to adhere to the rules of petition, then you should come to church for the service. At the same time, add five hundred. What it is? This is the same cell rule. Reverend Anatoly says that after prayer it is worth thanking God. Otherwise you will judge yourself. If you do not have the opportunity to read, play the audio recording, which you can hear below in the video.

Peaceful and humble dreams to you!

Evening prayer to the Holy Trinity

Turning to the Holy Trinity will help you get rid of unpleasant memories, as well as protect yourself from evil people, the evil eye and damage. The prayer should be said after the last meal, and it sounds like this:

“Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on me and deliver me from the temptations I have encountered during the day. Yes, protect me from the evil that my enemies want to inflict on me tomorrow or another day. Glory to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen".

You should say this simple prayer every day, and then failures and troubles will always pass you by.

Prayer for forgiveness of sins before bed

Misdeeds we commit during the day can lead to dire consequences. None of us is immune from mistakes, but if you want to avoid the wrath of God, we suggest you say a prayer for the forgiveness of sins every evening.

“I turn to the Lord God, His Son Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Mother of God, I pray for forgiveness of the sins I have committed. I ask you to cleanse my soul from evil, from bad thoughts and direct me, servant of God (name), to the true path. Amen".

You should only say this prayer if you truly repent of your sins. Otherwise, your appeal will be meaningless.

Evening prayer to the Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel is your main heavenly assistant and protector. In order for the heavenly messenger to protect you daily, you must say this prayer every evening.

“Guardian Angel, I ask you, protect me from enemies and the evil that they can cause me. I ask that every day begins and ends under your protection, that you protect me from failures and sins. Amen".

Throughout the day, a person needs additional help, and Higher powers can provide it. To enlist the support of the Saints at the beginning of the day, we suggest you use morning prayers. We wish you happiness, and don't forget to press the buttons and

A prayer to the revered Christian saint, whom God has endowed with the gift of healing sick people, is considered one of the most powerful. ...

One must resort to prayers not only at the moment of grief or misfortune, but every day, thanking the Almighty for every day lived. Find out...

Before we fall asleep, we think about how our day went. And everything would be fine if we just thought. But, unfortunately, people often cannot fall asleep until the morning, literally going crazy from the attacks that their own thoughts create. Christians are practically free from many such things, and in this they are helped by a correct lifestyle and evening prayer before going to bed. This is why it is so important to turn to the All-Holy Trinity before going to bed. In order for sleep to pass easily, you should definitely talk to the Creator, protecting yourself from all kinds of internal and external storms. And both material and spiritual.

Why are evening prayers needed?

Every Christian is, in fact, a warrior who has stood up to fight for light, love and truth in his soul, as well as for his destiny in eternal life, which will come with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of dead bodies.

The enemy of the human race is the devil, who, according to Sacred Tradition (the history of mankind, which is partially transmitted from mouth to mouth), was immediately against God creating anyone other than Angels, because these spiritual beings already possessed all the virtues and enormous opportunities . And animals were already created by the Creator who were carnal creatures. The proud star was perplexed, why add another flesh-bearing creature, an animal - a person?

But the Lord wanted to create a creation that would unite in itself all the rest of his creations - both spiritual and material. Therefore, another creature appeared, angels in essence, but having their own material expression - people.

The first man, Adam, was that first fruitful angel, the crown of creation, in which God united the practically incompatible - spirit and matter, and “made friends” between heaven and earth. The devil was overcome with jealousy and offended that God did not take his opinion into account, but at the same time realized how dear the person was to God. And he decided to take revenge. Since the Creator himself he could not cause any harm, the former angel decided to strike at God's beloved creation.

According to Tradition(and partly Scripture), God visited Adam at noon in paradise and taught him the secrets of the Universe. The first man alone, and then together with his woman Eve, quickly comprehended science. Adam penetrated into the essence of many things and therefore was able to give names to animals in accordance with God's plan for each of them. The devil realized that soon people would develop in such a way that they would become serious contenders in the arena of championship, which existed only in the minds of an ordinary angel who had fallen and degenerated into a sadist. Those Angels who remained with God and His truth only rejoiced at their new brother and sister, joyfully accepting new members of the huge family.

The devil decided to “seize the day” while fallen and crippled spirits still remain smarter and more experienced than simple-minded and pure people, so attached to the Father that they sacredly observe the ban on eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Then Satan, as is known, having entered the body of the serpent, crawled up to Eve, as if she were younger and inexperienced, and, having slandered the Creator that He did not allow eating from the Tree, because He was allegedly afraid that people would become like Him, he persuaded Eve to taste the fruit.

At that moment, when the youngest succumbed to cunning and distorted lies, Satan practically spiritually killed us, people: the fruit from the Tree gave such consequences that the first flesh-bearing angels were unable to live according to God and were deprived of heavenly bliss. He also killed us physically - through sin and death came to us, that is, the inability of the body to live forever. Therefore we call the devil, who was once one of the most beautiful and luminous angels, whom his fellows called Lucifer - Morning Star:

  • the father of all lies,
  • enemy of the human race,
  • murderer
  • misanthrope, etc.

But the loving Heavenly Father did not allow his beloved creation to perish, which, like the Angels, was created eternal. People continued to grow, multiply and develop, but in different conditions, going through the harsh school of life on earth, where we were given a choice: we should continue to live with God or without Him.

On the path of each of us, regardless of faith and lifestyle, spiritual enemies who hate us have stood, stand and will stand in fierce malice, who will resort to any lie in order to seduce us, subjugate us, distract us from Heavenly Father. It is known that Satan “boasted” that he would subjugate every single one of us and rule over us in hell.

God created hell, a specially designated place from which He withdrew His active participation and grace so that those who do not want to be with Him may have such an opportunity. Michael the Archangel threw the devil there, and with him those who went over to the side of the liar and the proud went there.

And now the demons want only one thing: to drag along as many people as possible in order to mock them for all eternity and take revenge for the fact that that God still loves man, and even for the sake of salvation and life together with him in the Kingdom of Heaven, in paradise, he was crucified for us, and even conquered death!

So is it really impossible for us to get rid of this spiritual abomination? Can. Jesus said: “this generation,” that is, demons and demons, are cast out “by prayer and fasting.” That is why everyone who has decided to resist and return to eternal life and love with God should often pay attention to their Parent - the Heavenly Father - and communicate with Him and pray. Prayer at night before going to bed will protect you from demonic trials (temptations) and help in various needs.

Brief evening prayer rule

For strong protection, the holy fathers, who were able to defeat the devil and gain the constant presence of God in their souls, based on their experience, compiled several prayer rules. One of them is the Midnight Office. But for a modern person living in a crazy age of speed and loads, it is too heavy and long.

Therefore, now this midnight rule, consisting of prayers and reading the psalms of David, remains only in monastic life, and occasionally in secular life. And for the laity it was replaced by an abbreviated rule - prayers for the coming sleep. The complete ancient prayers are now read by monks or Old Believers who did not recognize the innovations and relaxations.

A relatively new evening rule consists of 10 prayers, which are addressed to each hypostasis of the Trinity:

  • the first prayer is dedicated to the Father - the Creator of all living things,
  • the second - to His Son and our Savior, thanks to whom man has the opportunity to return to his “first grace”,
  • the third - to the Holy Spirit, the third hypostasis of God.

The rule also includes prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos, the Guardian Angel, and ends with the obligatory confession of sins to one’s Creator. The last phrase is sending your spirit to God and asking him to preserve and preserve it while the one praying remains in sleep.

This whole rule is aimed at nightly preparation a person to possible death - the transition to the spiritual world and waiting in an individually prepared spiritual space for the Second Coming of Jesus and the Last (Last) Judgment, which will decide the fate of a person in eternity. This is evidenced by the meek, contrite prayer of St. John of Damascus, read by attentive worshipers with special trepidation.

It begins with the words “Master Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed?” It encourages each person to renounce earthly values and encourages them to remember their heavenly homeland, delicately reminding them that life is finite and God will definitely ask a person what he has decided: to return to “first grace” and prefer life with God in paradise, or choose a sinful life, and then hell and its inhabitants will be closer in state to him.

The Christian also asks in his conversation with God, “those who hate and offend” forgive him. God will judge a Christian not only by his prayers and sincere repentance of sins, but also by whether he prayed for his enemies.

An even more abbreviated prayer rule

Unfortunately, the modern realities of life are such that for the average Christian even this abbreviated rule, in comparison with the Midnight Office, turns out to be beyond his strength. There is no officially recognized church shortening of the already short rule. However, there are some options for reductions and even complete replacements posted online. How beneficial this replacement is to the soul remains an open question. But in a situation where the spiritual potential of a Christian can be expressed by the words “either this way or not at all,” it can be used as a huge assumption. But on one condition - there must be a blessing from the priest.

Blessing will allow you not to indulge in selfishness and pride, but to act out of obedience, and this is one of the virtues that pleases God.

There are at least two options:

  • Seraphim's rule
  • The evening rule, reduced to several prayers.

Seraphim's rule (prayer for the coming sleep, short 3 strong)

This is a short rule that St. Seraphim of Sarov blessed for people who, not due to laziness, but due to the severity of their work, did not have the opportunity to read the full version every day.

It includes three prayers:

  • Our Father (read three times)
  • Rejoice to the Virgin Mary (read three times),
  • The Creed (“I Believe”) is read once.

Abbreviated everyday rule

Schematically it looks like this:

It is also worth noting that the prayers are written, albeit in Russian letters, but in Church Slavonic, so some words may be incomprehensible. In this case, it is necessary to turn to the interpretation of these words so that the conversation with God does not turn into the reading of some kind of spells. This is a godly thing. Beloved by God, David, the great-grandfather of the Most Holy Theotokos, writes in his psalms as an instruction to believers, “Sing to God, sing wisely,” that is, understand what you say, understand.

Miracles of those who pray at night

To strengthen faith and to encourage prayerful deeds, we will give several examples of what happens when a person includes in his life a nightly conversation with the Heavenly Father.

Getting rid of bad thoughts and images

A certain woman was often tormented by bad thoughts: they constantly crawled into her head when she was already going to bed. Her imagination painted her various unpleasant pictures, indecent scenes. This soon became a big problem. Realizing that she couldn’t cope on her own, she went to church for confession. The priest, after listening, said that it was the demons who forced her to watch and listen to all these things, so that she would accept them as her own and thereby sin by applying her will and her choice to them. The servant of God recommended that she read prayers for the coming sleep every evening. Imperceptibly the temptations stopped, as if they had never existed.

Deliverance from demonic dreams

Demons, in order to confuse and subjugate a person, often try to intimidate him. To do this, they look for weaknesses, passions or fears and begin to “inflate” them. This is what happened to one man who experienced mystical fears - he was afraid that the vivid dreams that he had almost every night were actually prophetic. Fear was fueled by the fact that some episodes from dreams actually came true, and things began to happen that could well be taken as signs, indications of possible events.

All this finally drove the impressionable person into a corner. Conversations with a psychologist did not bring any lasting effect, and the man went to church for confession, realizing that this was the last resort. The priest blessed him to read the evening rule. The man soon noticed that ambiguous dreams and events that could be taken as signs or omens began to recede, and he himself stopped taking much of it seriously, focusing on more important things in his life, including the spiritual.

God's help to a praying widow

A certain young woman was widowed early and was left alone with a young child in her arms. In horror, she went to a spiritual man, an elder, in a holy place, to ask how she could continue to live. He told her not to lose heart, to live on, explained that her husband was alive and well, that only the “clothing” of his soul had been lost, but his personality had been preserved. He ordered me to treat my spouse as if he had simply gone “on a long business trip” and blessed me to pray every morning and evening according to the rules established by the Church, as well as to begin receiving Communion every 2 weeks.

The frightened woman, who tried her best to carry out the priest’s blessing, noted that every day she had support from above. She succeeded in absolutely all her affairs (and there were a lot of them after her husband left), the Lord arranged for her cash payments and a part-time job, and the baby was quickly accepted into kindergarten. As a result, she thanks the Lord every day for his help, support and love, for the fact that she and the baby do not need anything, and prays for her beloved husband, just as she did during his earthly life.

One believing woman from a neighboring church invited her to go together to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. On the way, they read Orthodox morning and night prayers together, stopping for this in convenient places. In the monastery they prayed together for their departed spouse and they gave forty for him. The next night, the widow dreamed of her beloved husband, who was standing in line for some spiritual rewards in a certain place, like a small temple. The dream began from the moment her husband approaches the sacred person and receives a certain reward from his hands.

Every Orthodox Christian must adhere to a certain prayer rule, performed daily: morning prayers are read in the morning, and in the evening it is necessary to read prayers for the coming sleep.

Why do you need to read prayers before going to bed?

There is a certain rhythm of prayer intended for monastics and spiritually experienced lay people, for example, they may use a rosary.

But for those who have recently come to the Church and are just beginning their prayer journey, it is quite difficult to read it in its entirety. And it happens that unforeseen situations arise for the laity when there is too little opportunity and time for prayer.

In this case, it is better to read the short rule than to mindlessly and without reverence jabber the full text.

Often, confessors bless beginners to read several prayers, and then, after 10 days, add one prayer to the rule every day. Thus, the skill of prayer reading is formed gradually and naturally.

Important! Any prayer request will be supported by Heaven when a person directs his activities to serving God and people.

Evening prayers

In the evening, the laity reads a short rule - a prayer for the night before going to bed:

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, our souls.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Thrice)

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; Perplexed by any answer, we offer this prayer to You as the Master of sin: have mercy on us.

Glory: Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You; Do not be angry with us, do not remember our iniquities, but look upon us now as if you are gracious, and deliver us from our enemies; For Thou art our God, and we are Thy people; all works are done by Thy hand, and we call upon Thy name.

And now: Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who trust in You, so that we may not perish, but may be delivered from troubles by You: for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Good Mother of the King, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Thy Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Thy prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that I may pass through the rest of my life without blemish and through Thee I will find paradise, O Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure One and Blessed One.

Prayer to the Holy Guardian Angel

Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and protector of my soul and body, forgive me all who have sinned this day, and deliver me from every wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that in no sin I will anger my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.

Kontakion to the Mother of God

To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as having been delivered from the evil ones, let us write thanks to Thy servants, the Mother of God, but as having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ti; Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.

Glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may You save our souls.

I place all my trust in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your roof.

Virgin Mary, do not despise me, a sinner, who requires Your help and Your intercession, for my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

Prayer of Saint Ioannikios

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Interpretation of individual prayers

  • Heavenly King.

In prayer, the Holy Spirit is called the King, because He, like God the Father and God the Son, rules the world and reigns in it. He is a comforter and still provides comfort to those who need it. He guides believers on the righteous path, which is why he is called the Spirit of Truth.

Icon of the Holy Trinity

  • Trisagion.

The petition is addressed to the three hypostases of the Holy Trinity. The heavenly angels sing a great song before the throne of God. God the Father is the Holy God, God the Son is the Holy Almighty. This conversion is due to the victory of the Son over the devil and the destruction of hell. Throughout the prayer, a person asks for permission from sins, healing of spiritual infirmities for the sake of glorifying the Most Holy Trinity.

  • Lord's Prayer.

This is an appeal directly to the Almighty as the Father; we stand before Him as children before their mother and father. We affirm the omnipotence of God and His power, we beg to control human spiritual forces and direct them to the true path, so that after death they will be awarded the honor of being in the Kingdom of Heaven.

About other Orthodox prayers:

  • Prayer to the Guardian Angel.

He is the Good Spirit for every believer, determined by God Himself. Therefore, praying to Him in the evenings is simply necessary. It is he who will warn against committing sins, help to live holy and will protect the soul and body.

The prayer especially highlights the danger of attacks from bodily enemies (people pushing to commit sin) and incorporeal (spiritual passions).

Nuances of the evening rule

Most people have a question: is it possible to listen to Orthodox chants on audio recordings?

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul says that it does not matter what a person does, the main thing is that any of his work is done for the glory of God.

Apostle Paul

Important! It is necessary to understand that you cannot replace prayers for future sleep by listening to Orthodox songs.

Prayer should begin before going to bed. Before starting to read the rule, it is recommended to thank God for everything that He has given throughout the day. You need to turn to Him with your mind and heart, realizing the meaning of every word spoken.

Advice! If the text is read in Church Slavonic, then you need to study its Russian translation.

In modern practice, the rule is supplemented by reading prayers for:

  • close and dear people
  • living and deceased;
  • about enemies;
  • virtues and about the whole world.

How Orthodox Christians pray:

In a dream, a person is especially vulnerable to the devil’s army; he is visited by sinful thoughts and bad desires. Night in the Christian understanding is considered a time of rampant demons. A person can receive information that can seduce his body and lead his soul into sin. Demons are very insidious; they can send nightmares in a dream.

Advice! Even when all life circumstances are going well, we must not forget about faith and the Heavenly Father, because human destinies are initially predetermined in Heaven. Therefore, it is necessary to turn to God before going to bed, and the next day will definitely turn out better than the previous one.

  1. It is useful to listen to the singing of the elders of Optina Hermitage. This men's monastic monastery is famous for its miracle workers who could and can foresee human destinies. The need to serve the Almighty is conveyed through their prayer songs and sets them on the righteous path.
  2. The Church has a positive attitude towards viewing Orthodox videos, but this material must be treated very carefully, and in the process of listening or watching it is recommended to put aside worldly activities.
  3. Church officials advise including the prayers of the Optina Elders as part of the evening rule. Their texts have been developed over centuries and each of their phrases carries the greatest wisdom, capable of clarifying the foundations of the Orthodox faith and understanding their full depth.

Prayer is the breath of the soul of an Orthodox person. He practically cannot control his sleep, and other life processes are difficult to control. Therefore, prayer before going to bed is aimed at ensuring that the Creator participates in human life, otherwise He will not have the opportunity to help us.

Important! Offering prayer before going to bed means that an Orthodox Christian gains protection and support. In addition to their own protection, mothers beg God to protect their children and send them mercy.
