Why is the speed good but the ping is high? Why is there a high ping - causes and solution to the problem

Every user who loves online games has come across the concept of ping. The concept itself has several interpretations, but regardless of this, high ping always indicates problems with Internet speed.

Therefore, many are interested in what causes high ping and how to lower it? Let's figure this out.

What is ping?

In its primary understanding, this term is found in almost all online games and is displayed on the screen in one form or another. It is easy to see that when the indicator becomes high, problems immediately begin with any commands - they are executed slowly, the game begins to slow down and may crash.

But not everyone can answer exactly what ping is. In fact, this indicator reflects the speed at which a command is sent from your computer to the game server, after which the data is returned back. This is how the action is performed in the game when, for example, you want to take a shot or take a step.

The faster the signal travels from the computer to the server and back, the faster the game works and the lower the ping rate.

The second meaning of the term ping implies that there is a special program in the operating system with which you can send data to any of the IP addresses and calculate how long it will take for them to return back. To perform this check, do the following:

  • Open the Windows Command Prompt, search for this function in Start or hold down the menu key and press R.
  • In the window that appears, enter the cmd command.
  • A black window will appear in front of you, where you need to enter ping + IP of the game server or the address of any site, then press Enter.
  • After execution, you will see the results of calculating the speed of your connection. This will allow you to understand how bad or good the connection is, in addition, if you see that there are a certain number of data packets that are lost, then the speed leaves much to be desired.

There are also online services for measuring data transfer speed, but their results may be less accurate than what you will see directly when checking the system.

So, after you have found out the ping speed, you are wondering what this indicator depends on and how to increase it? Let's move on directly to solving this problem.

What affects ping and how to reduce it?

Here are the answers to this question:

  • First of all, it depends on the Internet service provider. If you have an inexpensive Internet connection with low speed, then all you have to do is choose another tariff that will provide high data transfer speeds.
  • There are cases when the problem lies directly in the work of the provider, perhaps you have high speed, but the quality of the transmission channel leaves much to be desired, or, conversely, the channel is good, but it lacks width (narrow channels make it difficult to transmit data packets), and this is immediately also affects the connection speed. What's the solution? You should contact your ISP, they may be able to change the settings somehow or provide you with tips to help lower your ping. If you have not received any response or desire to solve your problem, most likely you should change this provider and not pay money for low-quality Internet.

  • Features of the game server. Again, it may have a narrow or low-quality Internet access channel, which is why users experience lags. The second case is that the game server may be too far from you, and the distance and a large number of users on the way to you reduce the speed of transfer of data packets. In these situations, you should change the server and look for one that is closer to you.
  • Computer problems. The ping is affected by weak signal transmission from the network card to the game file, and to fix this, do the following:
  1. Check your system for viruses that may clog data transmission channels by downloading third-party files.
  2. Check that the drivers for your network card are up to date; they may be outdated, which is why the equipment does not work fast enough.
  3. Stop any other downloads or programs using the Internet while gaming.
  4. Check who, besides you, is using the network connection (this is especially true if you have a Wi-Fi router in your house), because if while you are playing, someone is simultaneously downloading a series via torrent, naturally, the ping will be high .
  5. In addition to checking your home network clients, make sure that no third party users are connecting to the Internet.

Utilities to reduce ping

There are a number of applications designed to optimize your connection, but they are not guaranteed to help you reduce your ping, but they are worth a try.

We suggest using the following programs:

  • Leatrix Latency Fix script - it can be downloaded for free from the manufacturer’s official website. The essence of the work is to reduce the processing time of data packets when they are exchanged between the computer and the server. Installation is quite simple. After it appears on your computer, reboot and check the result. Did not help? Try other utilities.

  • NetScream is a popular program that modifies the properties of the modem so that it works as efficiently as possible. It is worth noting that the application has been around for a long time and is easy to install and use even for beginners.

  • “Internet Accelerator” was created to increase connection speed by selecting optimal settings for connecting to the network. The program independently tests your system and determines which parameters are best to use, after which all you need to do is install them and enjoy the increased Internet speed.

  • CfosSpeed is a driver that speeds up network connections and speeds up the Internet. It is worth noting that to get the first results you need to wait a few days while the program analyzes the system and adjusts the settings.

These tips and recommendations will help you understand what ping is, how it affects the speed of your Internet connection, and how to correct this situation. Please note that if all these tips did not help you, most likely you need to change your tariff or Internet service provider, or network equipment.

How to lower ping? This is the main question that we will try to answer in today's post. Of course, we will first tell you in general what it is and about how to find out ping.

Ping(ping) is the time spent delivering a packet of information from the user (client) to the server and vice versa. In other words, this is a delay and it is actually more correct to call it lag (English Latency - lag, delay), and not ping. Ping is initially a utility that checks the integrity and quality of connections in networks, and also indirectly determines the channel load. The name of the request itself comes from this utility. It is measured in milliseconds (ms).
More often than others, players (gamers) who play online games (WOT, CS and others) are interested in ping. For these players high ping this is a big problem. The smaller it is, the smoother the picture, the better the feedback and the more comfortable it is to play. For example, in online shooters, you pressed the shot button, and due to high ping (latency), while the command from the player’s computer reaches the game server, the enemy manages to kill you. And the player throws his computer out the window in a rage :)

How to find out ping? How to check ping?

To check your ping you can do a PingTest. To do this, we will use the command line. You only need to know the network address or IP address, site url. For example, let's check the delay from my computer to the server of our site.

  • Launch Command Prompt (press WIN+R, type cmd and press Enter.)
  • At the command prompt, type ping site and press Enter.

The system will start sending packets to the server ( usually 4, 32 bytes each) and receive answers from her. At the end it will display statistics on sent/received/lost packets, as well as information on the approximate time spent in milliseconds.

As you can see in the picture, my average delay to the site is 41 ms. Losses are 0, which is very good. If there are losses, then there are serious problems on some part of the route.

High ping and low ping. Causes.

Why is the ping high and what does it depend on? This is influenced by many factors:

  • The remoteness of the server from the client's computer.
  • Channel congestion.
  • The quality and speed of the network connection (may depend on the client’s provider)
  • Quality of the client’s equipment (router, USB modem, network card, etc.)

Ping jumps. Causes.

Sometimes the ping can jump from low to high. For example, in my practice there were cases when it jumped from 60ms to 999ms. With a high ping of 1000 ms, of course, there is no question of any online games. There can be many reasons for this scatter. Let's list some of them:

  • Bad connection.
  • Torrent clients enabled on the computer
  • Programs that consume traffic
  • Workload of routers, router

If you are connected through a router and several devices consume traffic through it, this may cause a jumping ping.

How to lower ping?

Here are a few ways you can reduce your ping. In the first case, we will use a special script that will make all the settings automatically. In other cases, you will have to delve into the registry yourself and configure everything yourself. In both cases, we will not leave you alone and will help you, as always. All these settings will help lower ping in games and globally in general :)

There are two types of packages: UDP And TCP. TCP - packets with a response about receipt, and UDP without responses. What does the script do when installed on a computer? To answer, I’ll explain how the computer processes and sends packets. Having received the packet, the computer first analyzes it, processes it, draws it and gives a response about receipt. And during this time, the server, having not received a response about receipt, cannot send new packets and these packets enter the sending queue. The script changes the TCP settings so that, having received the packet, the computer first immediately sends a response about receipt and only then begins to process the packet of information itself.
It should be said here that the script cannot do anything in games and applications that use UPD packages.
You can download the script at official website or on our website using this link. To install, unpack the downloaded archive and run the .exe file. Filename in my case Leatrix_Latency_Fix_3.03.exe.
Next, click on the Install button. All! Settings have been changed. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
You can return the settings to their original state at any time. To do this, run the script again and click the Remove button.

Other ways to reduce ping

If you don’t trust any third-party scripts, then you can take some measures yourself to somehow reduce the lags. What can I do to reduce ping in games?

  • If you use a USB modem, then it is better to abandon it in favor of wired Internet.
  • Change your Internet provider (changing your tariff sometimes helps too). It might be a connection quality issue.
  • If the game offers multiple servers, then change the server and choose the one closest to you geographically.
  • Update the network card driver (How to update the driver).

You can also make some settings in the operating system itself.

Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Results
What's the result? I still recommend using the script, since it uses more than one setting to reduce delays. By the way, the changes that we made in the system registry are also performed by this script.
That's all! Wish you low ping and always a high-quality connection. You can express all your thoughts in the comments to the post.

Good afternoon, our dear readers. The topic of our article today is very specific, as it will not be useful to everyone. But for a general outlook, I still advise you to read it to the end. Today we will talk about reducing latency in various games, in other words, reducing ping. For the average user, such information can also be useful in some cases. So don’t be lazy and read the article to the end.

All our readers who like to spend their free time playing online games, such as WoW, CS or World of Tanks, are familiar with the problem of high ping in the game. For those who don’t understand what we’re talking about, we can put it simply: no matter how low the ping is, you always want to make it even lower. The fact is that the speed of connection to the online game server depends on ping. The lower the ping, the smoother the game will run.

In scientific terms, ping is the time spent transmitting a packet of information on computer networks from client to server and back from server to client.

By the way, there is some confusion of terminology, because this time is not called ping, but lag or, in fact, delay (English Latency - lag; delay, delay, aka lag) and is measured in milliseconds. The lag is related to the connection speed and channel congestion throughout the entire length from the client to the server. Ping is a little different. But I will not break down ideas about terminology now, let it be according to tradition - ping is ping.

After reading the article, you will learn how to make a number of changes in the registry that will allow, but only in some cases, to reduce the ping in many online games and applications that use the TCP protocol in their work, as well as a number of Internet applications and everything connected with it. You can reduce ping without changing registry settings. You will learn all this as you read the article.

But you must understand that all of the following methods to reduce ping are not for everyone and will not always work. This technique depends on many factors, such as the Internet provider, channel bandwidth, type and variety of installed games and applications, operating system version, connection type and many other factors.

In order not to scour the registry for a long time in search of the right place and file, so as not to spoil the operation of the system as a whole, smart people made a special script. It will allow you to make all the necessary changes automatically and without much effort. Even if you are happy with your ping level and think that it is the most optimal for you, I still recommend using this script, since it cannot harm the system, but it can reduce the ping in any case. To be sure that the script is working, you can open it and view it. A knowledgeable user will not only understand exactly how the script works, but will also be able to improve it. Actually, there are quite a lot of such script optimizers. So there is a chance to find not just a script to reduce ping, but also an improved version of it.

But, as I already noted above, it is not a fact that even an improved script will work on your computer. Therefore, after this application, the ping may remain the same. But it’s definitely worth trying to change it. But if your channel has medium or high bandwidth, then most likely the script will work and the ping will decrease.

Script to reduce ping - how does it work?

The script is used to remove the delay time in Windows for processing packets. Standard settings send notification of packet acceptance only when the segment is completely processed, and not immediately after receipt. After applying the script, notifications about the receipt of the package will be sent immediately after it is received. The script also changes the standard package sizes and everything connected with them. The list of all changes will be very large, so there is no point in writing it, and you don’t need unnecessary information, you will only get confused in the terms.

All these changes in total lead to the fact that the delay in the response to the transfer and exchange of information between the computer and the server is reduced to almost zero. The ping is reduced, you are happy, the toys are flying, you even forget to have lunch.

Script to reduce ping

You can download the script to reduce ping from the official website or modified by me for the needs of the RuNet from.

Scripts are supported by all operating systemsWindows 7, Windows 8 and 10, even XP.The system bit size also does not matter, 32 (x86) or 64 bits, the script can be installed on any OS.

The first step is to unzip the downloaded files, find the EXE file and run it. Before installation, I recommend checking the ping (run CMD as administrator and enter the command there - ping google.ru -l 32 -n 50 ) and create a restore point in case something goes wrong.

A window will appear in which we click “install”.

After the program is installed, be sure to restart the computer and see the result.

The program may not install due to the lack of the .NET Framework. So, we also need to install the .NET Framework, you can find it in our .

Perhaps you will not achieve the desired result in reducing ping, and you will want to remove this program. To do this, you need to run the EXE file and click on “remove”.

It is possible that during installation you will immediately see not the “install” button, but the “remove” button, but you have not installed any such programs. This suggests that your system is already set up for optimization. Therefore, you don’t have to install the program, but you should try to change the high ping in other ways. But I would not recommend doing this, since proper optimization has already been carried out.

We lower the ping technically and is it real?

And for those “specialists” who claim that no scripts can reduce ping or for those non-believers, I will tell you how ping is formed, lags and response delay, so that you finally understand how this whole thing works.

Before I start talking about the general principles of operation, let’s agree with you that I will denote “ping, lag and latency” in one word. That is, when I write one of these three words, then I mean the other two terms. After all, as I already mentioned at the beginning of the article, all these three terms have one common meaning, namely the time spent transmitting a packet of information in computer networks from client to server and back, from server to client.

Some people think that a lag, which is a ping, is one “action” that somehow happens. In fact, a lag is formed from several parts. Three, to be precise. A lag consists of a client, an intermediate and a server.

Now let's look at each stage of formation:

The client lag, which is also local, is formed on the user’s side and has the following structure:

  1. To The client's computer receives the packet
  2. processes
  3. replies that he received it
  4. sends a response packet
  5. waits for an answer about the receipt of the response packet.

All the time spent on the above actions is called client lag.

The next lag is intermediate. I’m sure you yourself understood that it occurs during communication between the user and the server. This delay consists of the loss of time for moving and processing information packets at all intermediate points. For example, the further the server is from the user, the longer the information will take. Also important for this lag is the power of the router, hubs and other stuff. To be more precise, the delay is due to the passage of information through the wires, the quality of the intermediate equipment, the subscriber port and the server port.

Server lag has the same parameters as the client, but only on the server side.

I'm sure now that you've learned how everything works, you're wondering about the script's impact on all of this. How can he reduce the remaining two pings and somehow influence not only the Internet channel, but also the server itself, which is located very far away? How can installing a script help fix all three lags, or even just one? And the answer is very simple: NO. The script is only able to cope with the first lag that occurs on the client side. The script can only interact with your operating system, locally on your computer.

But no matter what you think, the formation of this lag (on the client side) is a significant part of the ping problem as a whole. But even here not everything is clear. Even on the client side, how can a script speed up ping?

The fact is that there are two types of packets: TCP and UDP. The first packet is the packet that contains the response from the recipient. Remember the dialogue I described above? This is him. In the second package, there is no answer. Games and most applications have and use the second type of package. Therefore, in this case, the script will not be able to help you. But if you mainly use applications with the TCP package, then the script will most likely help you.

Before installing such a script, the client received a package, the computer analyzed it, processed it, and only then gave a response. During this period of time, several packets have already arrived and are queued for processing. With the installation of the script, the computer immediately sends a report about the receipt of the package and only then proceeds to process it.

Actually, that's where it all ends. This is how you can reduce your ping at home. If you have any questions after reading this article, I can always answer them, feel free to ask.
Also don't forget to share your experience. Thank you for your attention and low ping to you.

Question from a user

Hello.

Tell me, how can I lower the high ping in the game World of Warcraft? When you just run and kill mobs, everything is fine, but when you start fighting with other people, the game takes a long time to respond to my clicks. Ping ranges from 200 to 300 ms.

I tried cleaning Windows and optimizing it, but it still didn’t help. Is there anything else that can be done?

All the best to everyone!

In general, this is just one question out of dozens. All users who play online games: tanks, WOW, Counter-Strike, etc., I think that more than once or twice they have encountered lags and delays (that is, the ping has become very high) during the game.

In this article I will give the main points on what ping depends on, how to find it out, and how you can lower it. So...

How to find out your ping

To begin with, so that everyone understands everything correctly, I will give my definition of ping (simple and concise ☺) ...

Ping - this is the time spent sending a “piece” of data from your computer to another, and receiving a response from it. To exaggerate completely: if you ask a person a question and get an answer from him, then the time from the beginning of the question to the end of the answer to it will be the ping.

Ping is usually measured in milliseconds (ms or ms). In games they often write in English: Latency or Ping.

Of course, the higher the ping, the worse it is for you: your reaction in the game will leave the best until you press the button and it works - a significant amount of time will pass, which means they can simply win you for it. This is especially noticeable in active games where good reactions are needed.

A few words about how to find out ping

Ping is a variable value in real time, and besides, it will be different for different servers. Those. The ping to one server can be 100 ms, and to another 500 ms. Most often, you need to find out the ping for one or two servers. It is unlikely that you are interested in this value for all servers without exception...

To find out the ping, you will need the server's IP address (or its domain name, for example, website).

Then you need to open the command line: press the Win+R button combination, type CMD and press Enter.

Other ways to open the command line in different Windows operating systems -

  1. ping site- 4 packets will be sent, from which the average response time in ms is determined (see the screenshot below);
  2. ping 176.114.4.148- similar to the previous command, only the address is specified as an IP address.

As for the games themselves, in most online games the ping is shown in the game itself (sorry for the tautology).

For example, in WOW, to find out your ping, just hover your mouse over the computer icon (by the way, its color can be different: green - everything is fine, yellow - there is a delay, red - it will be difficult or impossible to play). In the screenshot below, the latency is 132 ms (if you have the English version, see Latency).

If we are talking about Counter-Strike, then the ping is generally shown both when connecting to the server and directly in the game itself. In general, I don’t see any difficulties with its definition...

How to reduce ping - what to pay attention to!

1) Internet provider, connection type

Your Internet provider plays a huge role in the quality of your Internet connection (including ping). It happens that your neighbor’s ping is tens of times lower on the same server on which you play - and the only difference is in the service provider. Therefore, the first piece of advice is to try asking your acquaintances, friends, neighbors if they have a similar problem, maybe even try running the desired game on their PC and compare the delay values. Next, decide to change the provider.

By the way, I personally know that a couple of guys I know “sit” on more expensive tariffs from not the most popular Internet providers just for the sake of a good connection with several game servers.

The type of connection can also be of great importance: say, a 3G modem will lose in ping to a conventional wired (fiber optic) Internet connection (which today, in my humble opinion, provides the best performance in terms of ping).

If you have a router installed, keep in mind that some inexpensive models may not cope with your network load and slow down (this will also affect delays and lags in games)... In this case, we can recommend turning off the router and connecting the network cable directly to the PC's network card and check how the game will run.

2) Remoteness of the server with the game

The second and also very important point is where the server with the game is located: on your local network, in your city, in your country, or even abroad? As a rule, the further away the server is, the higher the ping will be (but this rule does not always work).

Of course, I understand that there is not always a desire to change the game server (especially when friends appear and communication begins), but still - sometimes by changing the server, the ping can be reduced significantly! You can switch to play on another server with a whole clan at once (especially if you are all from the same city...).

3) Connection speed, tariff

There is such a myth - that the higher the connection speed, the lower the ping! Actually this is not true...

If the speed of the Internet connection is not enough to transfer data between you and the game server, then there will also be slowdowns in the game, delays, etc. But they are not directly related to ping - hence the confusion.

At all, speed- this is a parameter that determines how long it will take you to receive the requested data (measured in MB/s). Ping the same is the time spent on the server response, i.e. the lower the ping, the faster the download will begin, but the download time will depend on the speed.

In general, the message of this part of the article is to find out what the speed should be for a comfortable game, and then check your connection speed ( real, and not the one specified in your agreement with the Internet provider).

How to find out your real Internet connection speed -

4) Internet channel congestion

If you download something in parallel with the game, the ping may drop noticeably. Many, by the way, don’t even realize that their Windows system can download updates, uTorrent distributes files, and sometimes other users also download them from you, also look at other PCs/laptops (if you have several machines connected to the Internet), etc. .

How to disable updates in Windows -

To check which applications are loading the network, open the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc key combination) and look at the “network” column (sort the load by it).

Important! It is possible that specifically in your apartment there will be no extraneous load on the network - but the Internet channel of your provider will be loaded by other users (you are not the only one living in your house or area ☺). This is especially noticeable in the evening hours, when everyone is at home and the load on the network increases. Recommendations regarding the Internet provider are appropriate here (see point 1 above).

5) Problem with the driver for the network card

Drivers can have a big impact on the operation of a network adapter (in principle, like any other equipment). For example, on my work laptop, after I removed the drivers installed by Windows by default and installed them from the device manufacturer’s website, the Wi-Fi connection speed increased by 1.5 times!

In general, the topic of drivers is quite extensive; below I will provide a couple of links to articles from which you will learn how to correctly find drivers and how to update them.

How to install, update or remove a driver for a network adapter (using Wi-Fi (wireless network adapter) as an example) -

The best software for automatic driver updates -

6) Is your computer 100% loaded with extraneous tasks?

Perhaps your online game is slowing down not because of the ping, but because, for example, there is a high load on the processor and it simply cannot keep up and freezes. This can also happen when there is a high load on the hard drive or RAM. I discussed all this in detail in an article about computer brakes, and I recommend that you read it to diagnose and optimize the operation of your Windows OS.

Why does your computer slow down and how can you speed it up? -

7) Configuring the package scheduler (Windows fine-tuning - 1)

The QoS Packet Scheduler (or QoS Packet Manager) silently reserves a certain portion of the Internet channel for operating system updates, sending statistics, email, etc., etc. Sometimes this reservation reaches 10-20% of the channel’s capacity, which, you see, is not a little?! Therefore, it is logical that it needs to be disabled...

How to do it:

  1. go to the local group policy editor (click Win+R, enter gpedit.msc in the “Open” line and press Enter);
  2. then open the section: Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/QoS Packet Scheduler (or QoS Packet Manager)
  3. then move the slider to the "Enabled" position and set the value to "0". Save the settings and restart your PC.

Note: Not every version of Windows allows you to open the Group Policy Editor settings (in Starter and Home editions, this option is disabled).

8) Installing the Leatrix Latency Fix script (tweaking Windows - 2)

This script (by the way, it was written by a fan of the game World of Warcraft) is designed to remove the delay in the system's response to processing packets (in Windows this does not work like that by default!). As a result, the confirmation is sent immediately, which reduces the delay somewhat.

By the way, this can be done without special scripts - but you will have to rummage through the registry for a long time (which not everyone can do). A similar program works in auto mode, is easy to use, and does not require installation. What else is needed? ☺

After downloading the script, extract the archive and run the executable file (administrator rights are required).

  1. suggestion to install ( Install) - install and restart the computer;
  2. proposal to delete ( Remove) - if so, it’s better not to touch it, it means the changes have already been made to the registry (by clicking on Remove- you will return the settings to their original state).

9) Firewall and antiviruses

Another point that I would like to focus on is the operation of the antivirus and firewall (often they are combined into one security program called antivirus). By default, the firewall is distrustful of programs that are unfamiliar to it and, by default, asks you whether to allow a particular program access to the network.

All these checks often affect the performance of games. I recommend: either adding the game to the list of trusted applications, or disabling the firewall (and antivirus) while playing. Fortunately, many modern antiviruses already have a game mode...

How to block any program from accessing the Internet -

10) Installation of special utilities that increase the priority of games

And lastly, now there are quite a lot of utilities that can set the maximum priority for the game (during its launch), free up RAM, close unnecessary processes - thus, all PC resources will be used for the game (and not for extraneous tasks). Thanks to this, it is possible not only to reduce several pings, but also to speed up the game itself.

Game acceleration: the best programs and utilities -

I hope that after taking a set of measures, your ping will become lower.

That's all for me, good luck everyone!

Hello friends! Today I’ll tell you how to reduce ping! Those people who play online games constantly ask how to check the ping and how to reduce it. In this article I will tell you in detail what ping is and how to reduce it.

Ping is the time it takes for information to be sent to the server and returned back. That is, I’m from Odessa and go to the Kiev site, this is the ping time until the information reaches Kyiv and returns back. As a rule, the ping time depends on your provider; the better the Internet speed, the lower the ping will be. By the way, I recently wrote an article about, where I described all the tariffs and benefits. You can watch a video about this.

When you wander around the Internet, you don’t notice the difference between 20 ping and 150. But people who play online games can immediately pay attention to this. Because online games load the Internet a lot and its speed must be good, then the ping will be good. By the way, you can read here. This is all clear, let's see how to make the ping less.

How to reduce ping

In order to reduce ping we need to dig into the registry. To do this, go to Start > Run and enter the regedit command there, after which we will go to the registry, and then we will follow the branches HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile after double-clicking on NetworkThrottlingIndex there will be “a” (hexadecimal notation), and we need to select ffffffff and click OK.

After which we restart the computer and we already know how to reduce the ping. I cannot give you a 100% guarantee that the ping will decrease. But if you notice a slowdown in programs or your computer starts to slow down, then change everything. Or read the article
