The barbecue is laid on a concrete base (reinforced slab, 30 cm thick). Please note that a layer of waterproofing is first made under the barbecue oven (2 sheets of roofing felt are cut to size).

The cement-based refractory mixture “Hercules” is used as a mortar for laying bricks.

Expert advice: if you use a clay solution, then you can add 200-250 grams to a bucket of clay-sand mixture. cement M400.

Fire-resistant fireclay bricks are used for construction. This particular barbecue design will require about 1200 pieces.

Masonry seam thickness:

  • for the heat-resistant mixture “Hercules” – 5-7 mm;
  • for the Martel oven mixture - 3-5 mm.

Brick cutting:

  • Chamfering bricks (cutting off an edge, done to give the brick a decorative effect) - use a tile cutter with a 180 mm diamond blade
  • Brick cutting - performed with a grinder with a 230 mm diamond blade

Before sharp fireclay brick is soaked for 5-10 minutes, red stove brick - from 20 minutes (the lower the grade, the shorter the soaking time). To remove a chamfer (edge), the brick is only wetted.

In this case, the width of the openings is 71.5 cm, therefore, boards are taken to make a circle 71 cm long. There are formulas for calculating the radius of the arch, but the master determines it by simple markings using a thread.

You need to find the axis; for this, 14.5 cm is measured, and 2 cm is left at the edges. The numbers may be different, it is important that the highest point of the circle is at least 1/8 of the width of the stove opening.

A rule or even plank is applied to the board (the task is to imitate the continuation of the axis). As a result, we have 3 points. Using a pencil fixed on a thread, we draw an arc. Using a jigsaw, we cut out a circle, along which we mark 2 more boards and cut out two more circles.

The bricks are applied to the circle and the points of contact that will need to be cut are determined. Markings are applied to each brick and the corners are cut off using a grinder.

The circle is installed in the opening and the heel (support) bricks are cut in place.

Assembly is carried out from the edges to the middle. At the end, a lock brick is inserted.

Foundation for barbecue

The first stage of construction is pouring the foundation. A deep hole is dug for him 30 cm and size, which is 20-30 cm exceeds the size of the future structure. Clay is diluted with sand in the ratio 1:1 . The consistency of the solution should be like thick sour cream. It should be easy to handle with your hands, without spreading. If a small amount of clay mortar with sand easily rolls into a rope with a diameter 1 cm without cracking, spreading or losing shape, then the quality of the solution is good.

While the foundation is hardening, you should take care of the clay mortar in advance. G lina is soaked in water for a week and stir periodically, adding water if necessary. Clay and clay masonry mortar are sold in hardware stores. We supply electricity while still pouring, before laying out the brick grill. We draw out the contacts for connection with our own hands.

Waterproofing is laid on a completely hardened foundation - polyethylene folded several times, a layer of roofing felt or other bituminous material. Then it will not take moisture from the clay, and the grip will be better.

Order: how to build a brick grill

Despite the fact that we are dismantling an outdoor brick grill that is easy to build, the order of laying the bricks (diagram) is drawn up in advance, taking into account the selected dimensions and configuration. It is most convenient to do this on a checkered sheet.

How to lay brick? The easiest installation method is with each row offset by half a brick in relation to the previous one. The first two rows are laid out solid. The very first row is made up of solid bricks, without halves.

The lower part of the grill is the base. The laying pattern is from the corners to the center along the lines outlined in advance. Every 3 rows it is necessary to check the correct installation level and plumb, lay out the mesh for reinforcement.

The height of the plinth depends on the project. It may have one or more niches where firewood, coal and other utensils are stored. It is laid out in continuous masonry.

The central part of the structure is the firebox. The base for the brazier is prepared in advance cast from concrete with reinforcement or laid out of brick. If arches for the firebox and niches are built according to the project, apply circled. To distribute the bricks evenly, chips are inserted between them.

The gaps are the same, approximately 1 cm. Only after the arch has been completely laid out is the space between the bricks wetted and filled with mortar. The laid arch is left to harden with a circle on a day or two.

If the grill will also be used as a barbecue, you should in advance be concerned about the possibility grille installation. Leave a small ledge for it, or several ledges so that the grille can be placed at different levels. Install it on reinforcement rods embedded in the walls of the barbecue.

Advice: If you leave small gaps between the bricks when laying the firebox, when using the barbecue in the future, thanks to the air penetrating into the cracks, combustion will be better.

Important! It is unacceptable for precipitation to come into contact with unfinished brickwork. If it starts to rain, it must be carefully covered with polyethylene.

The last stage is the construction of the chimney. Its presence allows you to maintain heat in the grill longer and remove smoke. 6. Selection of materials

You can mix types of bricks with each other, only taking into account the fact that each of the elements performs a specific function. So, to fill the foundation, it is necessary to use durable, fire- and water-resistant material. Granite or marble is best; you can use them to decorate the stove. However, in places of the highest temperature, fireclay should be used - a special type of facing brick.

You should choose the ShB or ShA brand, which are best suited for the construction of an outdoor stove. Their peculiarity is that they can withstand extremely high temperatures and not burst. Limestone, basalts and dolomite can also be used.

The main emphasis when choosing a material should be on its fire resistance and strength. A stove built from high-quality bricks will last a very long time.

7. Clay solution

Not only the brick is used for the construction of the furnace, the clay mortar is also of great importance. To make it, you need to buy cement, sand and red clay. Using this solution, fireclay bricks are laid.

The clay is filled with some water. For mixing, it is recommended to use a bucket or basin, which you won’t mind throwing away later. After all manipulations, you should wait 6 days, then mix the resulting mixture with purified sand and cement number 200. Then the mixture is thoroughly mixed and becomes ready for use.

8. Step-by-step technique for building a barbecue oven

9. Laying the foundation

The depth must be the same throughout the entire perimeter of the pit.

After the excavation is completed, the pit is filled with slag material once and then compacted very carefully. The use of slag is strictly mandatory.

Then the formwork is made. For this purpose, boards are prepared from boards having a width of 30 centimeters and a length equal to the length of the trench. They are installed over the entire area of ​​the foundation, both inside and outside. The entire structure is covered with reinforcement. You can use pieces of lying around wire and metal. These debris should be positioned so that they do not extend beyond the pit.

After this, grade 100 concrete is mixed. To save money, you can make it yourself, but construction stores also sell ready-made mixtures. The formwork is completely filled with concrete.

The concrete pouring is complete, but it must be allowed to completely harden for about three weeks.

10. “Kiln Leg”

Two or three days after pouring the concrete, when it has not yet hardened completely, the formwork must be removed. After complete hardening, the process of laying out the oven itself begins.

It is necessary to mark a small indent equal to the width of five fingers and draw it from the base to the edge. The bricks are laid out in a checkerboard pattern, which will make the structure more reliable.

As a result, eight layers of brick should be laid. The standard parameters of a brick “leg” are as follows:

  • Half a meter wide and deep.
  • A little over half a meter in height.

If desired, you can designate a different height by adding one or two more layers of brick. Most importantly, it is necessary to adjust the size of the oven to the person who will cook on it. This is a basic safety requirement and will also allow for more efficient use of the building.

11. Bottom of the firebox

Next you need to start forming the firebox bottom. It may be concrete. The standard size is 0.8 meters. Just like when pouring a foundation, formwork is required. It is installed along the “leg”. To make it easier to remove the boards, they can be fastened with self-tapping screws.

The reinforcement is laid out according to the already known principle. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that not only the void inside the “leg”, but also the tabletop should be filled with concrete. This will strengthen the stove, the bottom of which should be significantly heavier than the top. After removing the formwork, you should also wait for the solution to dry.

After this, another layer of ordinary brick is laid around the perimeter of the building, and the center should be lined with fireproof brick.

12. Firebox walls

Please note that the front side of the firebox must remain empty. Eight rows of bricks are used to build the walls. Particular attention should be paid to the fastenings of the grill and skewers. If desired, you can mount them into the wall.

14. Chimney roof

At the corners of the chimney, columns should be formed from the remaining brick pieces. A concrete slab about 5 centimeters high is placed on them.

When building a barbecue oven, you should follow stages and be careful. Errors, if they occur, are better to correct immediately than to wait for dire consequences. After securing the structure, you can begin pleasant chores: finishing with plaster, furnishings and building a canopy.

15. BBQ and gazebo
