Prayer to the icon of the Virgin Mary "Izborskaya"

O All-Merciful Lady, Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord of the Highest Powers, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Almighty Intercessor of our city. With faith and love we fall down and worship You before Your holy and most pure miraculous icon, with which You work wondrous and glorious miracles. O our All-merciful Intercessor and our unshameful hope, we thank You for all the good deeds from You that have been upon us from ancient times to the present day. And now we are sinners, remembering the wondrous sign of Your intercession of the city of Izborsk, revealed during the days of the military invasion of this city, we humbly pray to You: just as in ancient times You hastened our Father to help and You saved the people of Izborsk from troubles and many signs and You showed miracles, so now, Most Blessed Lady, look upon us, your weak and sinful servants. Grant Your Mother's intercession and care so that we may be delivered from all evil. But, O Most Holy Lady Lady Theotokos! With fear, faith and love we fall before Your honest icon and with a tender soul and a contrite heart we pray to You with tears: turn away from us, our All-Merciful Helper and Intercessor, the righteous wrath of God moving towards us and deliver us from famine, hail, fire, sword , invasions of foreigners and internecine warfare. Preserve this temple and this city well and, by the faith of those who live here, preserve it in peace. Be our Intercessor and Intercessor before the Throne of the Most High, where you stand. To whom shall we resort if not to You, Most Holy Mother of the Virgin! There are no imams of any other help, no imams of other hope, except You, the Queen and Lady! We flow under Your Cover. Through Your prayers send down peace to our Fatherland, health to the people, fruitful lands to the air, and goodness to the air. Deliver us from the falls of sin, from the slander of evil people, sorrows, troubles and sudden death. Enlighten us, O All-Merciful Intercessor, how to sinlessly pass the path of this earthly life. You weigh our weaknesses, weigh our sins, but you also see faith and find hope. Grant us the spirit of contrition, humility of heart, purity of thoughts, correction of sinful life and remission of sins. Strengthen the Orthodox faith in us, put into our hearts the spirit of the fear of God, the spirit of piety, the spirit of meekness and humility, the spirit of love and patience, and success in good deeds. On the Terrible Day of God’s Judgment, through Your prayerful intercession and intercession, O Most Pure Lady, grant us to stand at the right hand of Your Son, Christ our God. to him is due all glory, honor and worship, now and ever and to endless ages. Amen.

The Izborsk image of the Mother of God is located in the St. Nicholas Cathedral near the Truvorov settlement (Pskov region). Previously, there was a city there, but it was destroyed, and after restoration it began to resemble a village or village more than a real city. The place was named Old Izborsk (as opposed to the nearby village of New Izborsk).

The face of the Izborsk Mother of God can be seen in the iconostasis of the main chapel of the St. Nicholas Church, to the left of the royal doors. In previous historical records, this icon was called “Pyadnichnaya”, since its width corresponded to the ancient Russian unit of measurement - “span”. This is how the distance between the spread thumb and index fingers was indicated.

This version of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God was first mentioned in the second half of the 17th century.

The appearance of the icon

The Izborsk Icon of the Mother of God is a chest-to-chest depiction of the Mother of God. Her head is tilted slightly to the left, towards the baby Jesus. The faces of Mother and Son touch. The right hand of the Divine Infant embraces the neck of the Mother of God, and the left is extended to her right shoulder. Overall the image is strikingly colorful and clear, although there is no evidence that it has been restored. According to local residents, there is not a single sufficiently accurate copy of the icon; all copies are too dry and faded.

The image is covered by a gilded silver chasuble decorated with pearls, on which there is the following inscription: “Renewed by Alexander and Nastasya Kamennogorodsky, July 5, 1833.”

Place in history

The Izborsk Mother of God was recognized as miraculous in 1657, when the Pskov land was attacked by the Germans. In the sixth week of Great Lent, the pious widow Evdokia, together with her daughter Photinia, saw the Queen of Heaven, depicted on the icon that was in their home, begin to cry. The women hastened to take the image to the cathedral church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Seeing the Mother of God, from whose eyes tears were flowing, Archbishop Macarius of Pskov and Izborsk ordered to ask her for salvation. For forty days, everyone who took refuge in the St. Nicholas Church prayed to the face of the Virgin Mary. When the forty-day prayer service ended, the Germans left the Pskov area.

That same year (on Peter's Fast) Archbishop Macarius ordered to bring the miraculous icon to Pskov. It was placed in a temple dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The image remained there for two weeks, and then it was decorated with a rich robe and returned to St. Nicholas Church. Some time later, with the blessing of Archbishop Arseny of Pskov and Izborsk, the day of veneration of the Izborsk face of the Virgin Mary was established - March 22.

Celebrations dedicated to this day take place in the St. Nicholas Church in the city of (Old) Izborsk.

What does it help with?

The image of the Most Holy Theotokos “Izborskaya” can be asked for deliverance from passions that torment the soul and body, for salvation from foreign invaders, as well as for the prevention and cessation of any other evil.

Korsun Icon of the Mother of God has been revered by parishioners for centuries. Unfortunately, we now have to talk about the Korsun Icon in the past tense - thirty years ago it was stolen, and now there is a copy in its place. But who knows, maybe this one will return to these walls?

Many legends are associated with the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God in Izborsk

For example, there is this story. One Izborian languished in captivity, and one day an image of the Mother of God appeared to him on a simple table board; The Most Holy One ordered him to be taken with her and run away. The escape was a success. Returning to his homeland, the former captive gave the image to his widow friend Evdokia. It was revealed to her that he did not bring a simple icon, but a miraculous one. Confirmation was not long in coming. Besieged by enemies all the time, border Izborsk only managed to repel attacks. In the middle of the 17th century, during one of the sieges, the Izborians prayed for forty days in St. Nicholas Cathedral in front of the Korsun Icon. The image streamed myrrh for forty days, and then the enemy retreated. Since then, the icon began to be given “honor and unrestricted worship.”

The miraculous power of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God

Later, already in the 20th century, the icon again repeatedly proved its miraculous power. Thus, one local merchant, former naval officer L. Kostenko-Radzievsky, was so shocked by the sudden healing of his wife from an incurable illness (she had tirelessly prayed to the miraculous one) that he erected a chapel in honor of this icon at his own expense. On the eastern and western walls of the chapel you can still find fragments of an ancient cross from one of the local burial grounds, as well as a mortgage cross. And one more thing - the merchant tried to make sure that the building did not stand out from the architectural ensemble of the entire fortress, but complemented it. And he succeeded perfectly - it is unlikely that an ignorant person would mistake the miniature, traditional Russian Korsun chapel for a monument of the last century. It looks as if from time immemorial it stood at the foot of the Talavskaya Tower.

Loss of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God

In the heady 80s of the last century, disaster struck - the great Izborsk shrine disappeared. It was stolen, and, as one of the local priests said, they took it out by dismantling the pipe. Later, godless attackers stole all the silver vestments from the images from the St. Nicholas Cathedral, and even took away the icon of St. Nicholas from the altar. “There is no peace among the parishioners,” explained the famous elder of the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery, Father John (Krestyankin), answering the question of why the wicked dare to touch the shrines. “In order to reconcile everyone in the common grief, sometimes the Lord gives such tests.” And sure enough, grief seemed to unite all the Izborians: they prayed together for the acquisition of precious relics, and two weeks later the icon of St. Nicholas was discovered near Novgorod.

The Korsun image, however, has not yet been found, but my father gave a copy of it to the temple - he loved to come here to pray. And now, as before, everyone can again venerate the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God.

Izborsk Icon of the Mother of God

Celebration of April 6
It is a copy of the Korsun Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos.
The Izborsk Icon of the Mother of God was brought from the suburb to the city fortress by the pious widow Evdokia during the German siege of Izborsk in 1657, on the 6th week of Lent. The miraculous sign of the flow of tears from the eyes of the Most Holy Theotokos on this icon, which was seen by Evdokia and her daughter Photinia, was repeated and was witnessed by the clergy of the cathedral church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, where the icon was transferred from Evdokia’s house. By order of the Archbishop of Pskov and

Macarius of Izborsk (1649-1664), prayers were held in front of the miraculous icon for forty days. Through the prayers of the Most Holy Theotokos, the city of Izborsk was delivered from the invasion of foreigners.
In the same 1657, during Peter's Lent, on the orders of Archbishop Macarius, the miraculous icon was brought to Pskov, to the cathedral church in the Name of the Holy Trinity. She stayed here for two weeks, after which, decorated with a rich salary, she was returned to Izborsk.
A few years later, with the blessing of Archbishop Arseny of Pskov and Izborsk (1665 -1681), a celebration was established in honor of the icon, celebrated on March 22.
The local celebration of the Izborsk Icon of the Mother of God is held in St. Nicholas Cathedral in the city of Izborsk. In the icon, the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted slightly inclined towards the Infant Jesus, who clung to Her face, clasping the neck of the Most Pure Virgin with his right hand, and extending his left to Her shoulder. On the silver-gilded chasuble there was the following inscription: “Renewed by Alexander and Nastasya Kamennogorodsky, July 5, 1833.”

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos before Her Izborsk Icon
*****************************************************
O All-Holy Lady, we pray to Your mercy, Your generosity to be accepted by Your people and Your wealth, become a Prayer Book to our God born from You, may He help us, who are of course perishing, and may we be swept away from incurable misfortunes. See, O Lady, we are drowned by the colic of tears, have mercy on us and do not completely reject us. Turn away Thy face, O Queen, and forget our poverty and our sadness, squander the fear and trembling that is upon us, calm down the wrath of God that has come upon us, and tame the destruction, and pacify the strife and rebellion that exists among us, and grant silence and peace to Thy servant good deed, and having applied this, we always preach Your miracles, hoping to achieve eternal life through Your prayers, glorifying the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever.
Amen.
