How is PVC attached? How to cover walls with plastic panels with your own hands. Calculation of the profile for the sheathing

Panels made of polyvinyl chloride are considered a durable and practical material; they are widely used for decorative wall decoration. They are suitable for any room. A variety of shapes, colors and textures will allow you to create a cozy and stylish interior. Installing PVC panels on walls is quite simple; even a novice master can cope with the task.

Panel selection

Among the wide range of such panels you can get confused. In order to avoid mistakes when choosing, you should familiarize yourself in advance with all the characteristics and types of finishing materials. Low-quality panels quickly fade, they do not have the necessary strength, so you need to buy only certified material.

The advantages of PVC panels include:

  • ease of installation;
  • increased moisture resistance;
  • hygiene;
  • fire safety;
  • long service life without changing appearance;
  • resistance to the influence of any microorganisms.

One of the disadvantages is low impact resistance, so you need to be very careful when transporting and installing plastic wall panels.

The material can be divided into glossy and matte. The design technology can be printed or film. Strength will depend both on the thickness of the walls and on how many stiffening ribs are located inside. It is enough to press your finger on the surface to check the strength: bending plastic is a clear sign that it will not last long.

You should not take the material if:

  • there are scratches on the surface;
  • coatings differ in tone;
  • panel sizes do not match;
  • stiffeners are damaged or deformed;
  • on the front side there is a fuzzy pattern with blurred edges.

It all starts with preliminary calculations: how much is needed finishing material. Typically, panels can be mounted horizontally and vertically. When mounting vertically, calculating the quantity is simple: you need to measure the perimeter of the room, subtract the width of the openings and divide by the width of one wall panel. Several lamellas are added to the resulting number so that there is a small margin.

If horizontal installation of PVC panels on walls is assumed, then the area is measured minus windows and doors, then divided by the area of one lamella. The margin should be 10%, since material consumption increases due to trimming. The height of the walls must be divided by the sheathing pitch (usually 0.5 meters), then multiplied by the perimeter. The resulting number will indicate the length of the slats (calculated in linear meters). When measuring the height of the corners and multiplying by their number, you get the total footage of the profiles for the corners.

Mounting methods

The lamellas are attached in three ways at the discretion of the master: with self-tapping screws, clamps or with glue. The last option will only work in case of smooth walls. Select glue “liquid nails” or special for PVC. Due to this, installation of panels becomes cheaper - you don’t have to spend money on lathing. But there are also disadvantages: you are unlikely to be able to easily replace a damaged lamella.

Fastening with self-tapping screws is considered a convenient and reliable option, which does not require a perfectly flat surface. You will need a screwdriver so that the process does not take too long. The disadvantages of this method include the fact that a wooden frame is best suited for self-tapping screws, therefore, you will have to spend time cutting the timber and processing it.

Claymers are the best option. They are quickly and conveniently attached to the lathing, fixing the lamella to the wall. The lathing is assembled from metal profiles; there is nothing complicated about it. At the same time, damaged panels are very easy to replace without damaging adjacent ones.

The method of fastening is selected individually: everything depends directly on the condition of the walls and on the individual preferences of the person planning the repair. But in any case, glue is not used on surfaces with strong unevenness, because then it will not be possible to securely fasten the panels and it will not be possible to achieve a smooth and neat appearance. Then all your efforts will be in vain.

Everything should be at hand when working. Therefore it is necessary find out in advance what materials and tools may be required. Taking this into account, a list of everything necessary is compiled:

  • the plastic panels themselves;
  • fine-toothed hacksaw;
  • square and level;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • plastic profile or slats;
  • self-tapping screws, dowel-nails or clamps;
  • hammer drill and screwdriver;
  • sealant and antiseptic composition;
  • ceiling plinth.

It is worth noting that due to their versatility and ease of maintenance, plastic panels are often installed in the bathroom.

Step-by-step installation instructions

Before covering the wall, it is necessary to clean, seal existing cracks, level out defects if any, and treat the working surface antifungal agent. Then dust will not accumulate under the plastic and mold will not develop, which negatively affects the microclimate in the room. If the cladding is done on a frame, then the surface does not need to be carefully leveled first.

Wall marking

The sheathing is attached strictly level to avoid distortions. Markings on the walls are needed so as not to measure each rail separately. The bottom row of the sheathing is located a couple of centimeters above the floor, so you need to mark the height point on the wall with a pencil, and then use a level to draw a horizontal line along the perimeter of the entire room.

The same line will be required under the ceiling or along the edge of the trim (if the walls do not need to be sheathed to the full height). Then 50 centimeters are measured upward from the bottom line, a beacon is placed, and so on until the top. Parallel lines are drawn through the lighthouses. After this, the markup can be considered complete.

PVC panels are attached to the sheathing perpendicularly, so that the vertical frame is sheathed horizontally, and vice versa. For vertical sheathing, marking is done as follows: the first line is drawn from the ceiling in the corner to the floor itself, using a plumb line. Then the second angle is marked and the remaining lines are drawn (steps of 50 centimeters).

Installation of sheathing

It is imperative to prime all slats with an antiseptic if wood was chosen for the lathing. Drill along the marking lines holes for dowels maintaining a distance of 50 centimeters, then the slats themselves are applied, aligned horizontally and fixed directly to the wall. If there are irregularities on the wall, then you need to place wooden wedges under the sheathing. The wiring running along the wall is hidden under the trim. But to do this, you also need to take measurements in advance, drill holes and secure the wires with clamps so that they do not protrude beyond the sheathing.

Fastening the slats

After that, you can move on to the most important thing. The first lamella must be installed from the entrance in the far corner. You need to take measurements and, if necessary, cut the panel to the required length using a hacksaw. The panel is inserted with one edge into the side molding, applied to the corner and attached from the back to the sheathing.

The second lamella needs to be inserted into the fastening groove of the already installed panel, press the joints tightly, and fix it on the slats of the created frame. Usually, the side edges are lightly coated with silicone before insertion: this ensures good sealing of the joints. Subsequent elements are mounted in the same way until all walls are covered with the selected panels.

Holes are cut out in the panels for sockets and switches with a sharp knife, then these areas are covered with plastic boxes. The last lamella usually requires cutting to width, so you need to try it on the wall, mark the cutting line with a pencil and carefully cut off all excess with a hacksaw.

Installation of moldings

In order for the surface to look smooth and monolithic after installation, without gaps around the perimeter and at the seams, it is necessary to close special moldings all joints, corners and joints. These moldings are usually made of plastic. Their design allows you to insert panel edges on both sides, this will give the corners a finished look.

It remains to install decorative molding along the perimeter of the ceiling, and a plastic plinth along the perimeter of the floor. After this, finishing the walls with plastic panels can be considered complete. With careful use, such material can last a very long time without losing its original attractiveness and without requiring any repairs.

Even without the appropriate knowledge, there is nothing difficult about installing decorative panels yourself; you just need to strictly follow the instructions and do everything carefully - there is no need to rush into repairs. And caring for them is as easy as shelling pears: just wipe them with a damp cloth from time to time. Then PVC panels can decorate any room in the apartment. Even in the bathroom or kitchen they will look stylish, creating a cozy atmosphere.

During renovations, you don’t always want to deal with “wet” work - laying tiles, for example. There is a simpler technology - decorating walls with plastic panels. You can handle it yourself, even without much experience in construction work, and in a day or two you can carry out repairs in the bathroom, toilet, balcony/loggia and kitchen.

Types of plastic panels for wall decoration

This type of finishing material is made from PVC - polyvinyl chloride. In a semi-liquid state, this polymer is squeezed into a mold. A drawing is applied to the finished panels. It can be first printed on film, then glued and varnished (laminated panels). Moreover, these panels may not have a smooth, but a textured surface. The design applied using this technology retains paint for a long time, but similar materials cost about twice as much.

Several samples of laminated PVC panels for wall decoration

Another technology is to apply the design directly to the plastic, and then cover it with two layers of varnish. Cheaper technology, but the service life and quality of the drawing are lower.

Ceiling and wall

There are two types of plastic panels - for ceilings and for walls. Those intended for the ceiling have a thickness of 5 mm and thinner partitions, while those for walls have a thickness of 5 mm and more thin partitions, from 8 to 10 mm. You can determine which species is in front of you by looking at the cut. This type of finishing material is distinguished by the fact that it has a smooth surface and, when joined tightly, the seams are not very noticeable.

Plastic panels for wall decoration

There is another standard size, which is also called plastic lining - with a thickness of 10 mm, the panel has a width of 10 cm and shaped edges that are more characteristic of plastic lining. If you decorate the walls with this material, the surface will not be flat, but embossed, similar to wooden lining.

Sizes and prices

The width of plastic wall panels is most often 25 cm and 37 cm, length - 2700 cm and 3000 cm. There are other non-standard sizes, but these are the most common. There is quite a wide variation in price - it depends on the wall thickness, type of printing, manufacturer, complexity of the design, etc.

Thin PVC wall panels

Above we discussed products that consist of two layers of plastic connected by jumpers. Along with a lot of advantages, they have a rather serious drawback: if you apply enough force, they can be pushed through. This is often the reason for refusing to use them. Therefore, thin plastic wall panels appeared on the market not so long ago. Their thickness is 3 mm and there are no cells. Only a layer of plastic with a pattern applied to the surface. Accordingly, there is nothing to push. The dimensions of this type of panels are 950 * 480 mm or so.

Their installation method is different - they are glued to the walls. Due to the fact that this finishing material has a very small thickness, it is cut with scissors and, moreover, takes up very little space from the room - 3 mm.

What to look for when choosing

It is clear that the choice begins with color and pattern. But to avoid any difficulties during the installation process, you need to keep track of some points when purchasing:

  • Inspect the cut of the selected plastic panel. The thicker the lintels and the front and back layers of polymer, the stronger the finish. You can also focus on weight - the greater it is, the thicker the panels will be.
  • The thickness of the plastic is the same everywhere, without thickening or thinner places. This is a sign of normal quality.
  • Pay attention to the geometry. The cells should not be wrinkled, the edges should be absolutely smooth. Even if everything is packed, it doesn’t hurt to unpack and inspect it so that there are no problems later.
  • Inspect the front surface. The pattern should be applied evenly, clearly, without blurry spots.
  • If you choose panels from different packs, but of the same color, carefully look at the colors - they may differ.

To ensure beautiful wall decoration with plastic panels, check the quality in the store

It is also worth checking the quality of the polymer used. You need to take one plank so that it bends by about 30% and straighten it. After that, examine it. If there is no damage to the plastic or pattern, everything is fine.

The correct technology for installing plastic panels on walls

The good thing about decorating walls with plastic panels is that you can do it yourself and it takes a little time. Well, one more plus - you need the usual tools:

  • drill with drills (install dowels) and a wood bit (drill holes for sockets, etc.);
  • a screwdriver or screwdriver, a construction stapler, glue - depending on what type of fastener you prefer;
  • saw with a metal blade - cut plastic panels;
  • building level;
  • sharp knife - cut to width.

The lathing for wall panels must be in the same plane

This is all that may be needed when installing PVC panels on walls. The time required is one to two days, depending on the availability of experience and the areas being repaired.

What to make the sheathing from

Installation of PVC panels on walls according to the technology should be done on the lathing. The sheathing is made from:

  • Wooden bars. The optimal cross-section is 40*20 mm. Before installation on the walls, it is advisable to treat the wood with antiseptic compounds. If you plan to decorate walls with plastic panels in a damp room, then special treatment against mold is also necessary. The panels are attached to the wooden planks using wood screws, nails with a wide head, and staples from a construction stapler.

Wooden planks for lathing under PVC panels

Metal profiles (galvanized)

This is what mounting strips for PVC panels look like

Of the three listed materials, it is best to use plastic for installing plastic panels in the bathroom. It reacts little to temperature changes, does not react in any way to changes in humidity, does not rot or crack. Galvanization feels good in a humid environment, but it must be of good quality, otherwise it will still rust. The most unimportant material is wood, but even with proper processing, they also last for years. And for this to happen, carefully follow the recommendations for applying an antibacterial composition. In some cases, it is enough to brush it a couple of times, in others it is enough to soak it for a while and then dry it.

How to make lathing

Before installing the sheathing under the PVC panels, the walls must be prepared. First, remove the old finish and anything that might fall off. If there are large recesses on the surface, it is better to seal them, and strongly protruding parts can be trimmed off. After the wall has become more or less even, it is treated with a primer with an antibacterial component (against fungi and mold). After this, you can begin installing the sheathing.

Basically, plastic panels are mounted horizontally or vertically

The sheathing strips are positioned perpendicular to the PVC panels. That is, if you attach the panels vertically, the sheathing – horizontally and vice versa. Install the sheathing strips at a distance of 30-50 cm from each other. The optimal distance is 30 cm (the “walk” panel will be smaller). The strips are attached at the beginning and end of the wall, as well as around window and door openings.

The sheathing is attached at the bottom and top of the wall, around window and door openings. In between, the step of installing the planks is 30-50 cm

The sheathing under the plastic panels is most often secured with dowels. 6*40 mm are placed in a concrete wall (so that a piece does not fall out from the back side of the concrete partition), in a brick wall - 6*60 mm. Fasteners are installed in increments of 50-60 cm.

In order for the wall decoration with plastic panels to be smooth and beautiful, the lathing must be placed in the same plane. To do this, place wooden spacers under the wooden planks where necessary (pieces of plywood are possible), but they also need to be treated with a composition against fungi and mold.

Wooden slats can be mounted on hangers

You can also use perforated hangers for plasterboard ceilings. They are used when placing metal profiles in one plane, but they can also be used when installing wooden blocks.

If you decide to make a sheathing from plastic mounting profiles, then it is worth considering one point: they must be strictly perpendicular to the PVC panels. Even a slight deviation can lead to the fact that the clamps simply do not snap into place and will not hold anything. Therefore, check the verticals/horizontals very carefully. One more point: it is better to install wooden planks of the same thickness as the plastic guides along the perimeter of the walls, doors and windows: we will attach the starting profiles to them.

Installation of plastic panels

In addition to the actual wall plastic panels in the store, you will need to buy some more accessories - these are corner, starting and F-shaped profiles. They are necessary to give the finish a finished and neat look.

What besides wall panels is needed for installation

At the floor and ceiling level, you can use either a starter or ceiling plinth. The starting one is just a narrow strip of plastic, and the ceiling plinth is a shaped product with a characteristic cut.

Decorating walls with PVC panels begins with installing selected profiles in one of the corners and at the top/bottom. They are attached to the installed sheathing strips. Fasteners are selected depending on what material was chosen for the sheathing. The result is something very similar to a frame. We will insert the panels into it.

The problem point is the junction of the corner and ceiling plinth (we do the same below)

Next, cut the first panel to the length or height of the wall. Plastic wall panels are cut with a saw and a metal blade. When working with your hand (and even more so with your foot), do not lean on it - push. To ensure that the strip fits into its designated place without any problems, carefully measure the length, subtract 4-5 mm and cut it off.

The protruding spike is cut off from the first strip, after which the cut side is inserted into the corner profile, tucking the edges into the top and bottom. Lightly tapping with your palm, push the bar all the way, check the verticality of the level, applying it to the edge of the installed strip. Then they fix the sheathing to each plank.

This is what a plastic wall panel looks like inserted into a ceiling plinth

Having installed and secured the first strip, cut off the second, join it to the first, secure it, etc. No difficulties. Problems may only arise with the last panel on the wall. You usually have to cut it to width, and then try to tuck it directly into the groove of the previous plank and into the corner or starting profile. It doesn't always work out neatly - the plastic often gets jammed. This situation can be avoided by not securing the second corner profile. Then a corner profile is put on the panel cut to size, the whole thing is joined together with the previous plank and only then the corner profile is secured. This is not entirely correct, since only one half of the corner profile is attached, while the second remains unfastened. But after you've been tired of trying to do it right, you don't pay attention to it anymore. Then everything is repeated - further finishing of the walls with plastic panels occurs in exactly the same way.

How to do without corner profiles

If we are accustomed to the presence of skirting boards at the top and bottom of the wall, then not everyone likes corner profiles. When decorating walls with plastic panels, you can do without them. You will need a sharp wallpaper or stationery knife. If you cut a strip of plastic from the back in the right place, the panel can be bent. This will not be visible from the front side, and you will be able to avoid suffering with the last panel. And outwardly, many people like this solution better.

Wall decoration with plastic panels: how to do without corner profiles

To correctly determine where to cut, insert the penultimate panel and secure it. We take a piece of panel a few centimeters wide, insert it into the already installed one and mark where the corner is located. We take it out, cut out a strip of plastic in the marked place, and try it on. If everything is fine, we use this piece as a template, moving the exact location of the cut. This is also not a technology, but it seems to me that decorating the walls with plastic panels looks better. Especially if the color and texture of the corner profile is different.

How else can you fix PVC panels on the walls?

Although the method described above for decorating walls with plastic panels is not very complicated, it is not suitable for everyone. For example, the walls are perfectly smooth after plastering with beacons or leveling the walls with plasterboard. It is clear that lathing is not needed. It will only take up space. In this case, they violate technology - they glue plastic panels onto silicone or polyurethane foam.

In this case, the starting profiles will still have to be installed, but they will need to be secured to the appropriate dowels. After that, foam (zigzag) or silicone is applied to the back side of the panel (in islands in increments of 10-15 cm), the bar is inserted into the profiles, pressed, and fixed in one or two places with appropriate fasteners. They continue in the same spirit.

The advantage of the method is that it is very fast, the disadvantage is that it only works on smooth (or almost) walls. But the most important thing is that it is simply impossible to remove the finish without destroying the plastic panels.

Wall decoration with plastic panels: mounting methods

Decorating walls yourself with plastic panels is not very difficult. You can refinish your bathroom in a day or two. You just need to know the sequence of actions.

Walls

It is not for nothing that polyvinyl chloride has gained such wide popularity in the construction industry. A wide variety of materials are made from it, which are used in construction and decoration. Installation of PVC panels on walls and especially ceilings is quite common, and today every team of builders offers similar services. However, due to the simplicity of the device and installation, it is quite possible to independently install PVC slabs.

Where to begin?

The first thing that sometimes receives insufficient attention is measurements and planning. It is not enough to measure the length and width of the ceiling and simply buy the required number of panels; all aspects of preliminary preparation must be taken into account. If the surface is perfectly flat, then simple gluing of slabs on the ceiling or walls will be enough for unpretentious tastes. In the case when the plans include giving the room not only aesthetic appeal, but also practicality, it is worth thinking about installing a full-fledged frame in which it is possible to hide various types of communications, for example, lighting.

Of course, it is difficult to imagine a job in which there is no need to use a tool. In this case, you will need the following:

  • a hammer drill or drill with a hammer function to the delight of all neighbors during installation work,
  • stepladder (for working in apartments with a standard ceiling height of 2.5 meters, the optimal choice would be an inexpensive aluminum stepladder 1.8 meters high),
  • hacksaws for wood and metal (a hacksaw for metal is best suited for cutting PVC panels, allowing you to make the edges of the cut as smooth as possible),
  • tape measure and building level,
  • a painter's knife or shoemaker's knife (a well-sharpened piece of steel can also be used, the blade should be tilted at 60 degrees, the optimal blade width is 10 centimeters),
  • hammer,
  • self-tapping screws or wallpaper nails with which PVC panels are fastened to the frame.

Finishing with PVC panels requires the mandatory use of the specified tools for work, since without them it is impossible to accurately perform the installation (the only exception is a hammer drill, which is needed to quickly level the problem surface). After selecting the tool, you should proceed to the first stage of work, marking.

Preliminary preparation and measurements

First, the markings are applied to the entire working surface. Since PVC ceiling slabs have standard lamella sizes, it all depends on preference. The most popular solution is “lining” - long strips that are 10 cm wide. It is necessary to draw lines to install the profile every 400 millimeters. The first mark is made along the width of the PVC panel, starting from the lowest point on the ceiling. After this, using a building level, marks are drawn along the perimeter of the surface for attaching anchors or dowels, depending on preference, with the help of which the frame will be installed to the surface of the wall or ceiling.

Please note that the profiles of the main supporting frame are always attached perpendicular to the location of the PVC plates. Experts recommend using not only a system of marks and a level for marking, but also an ordinary thin rope for quick marking. How to make it? Simple enough. You just need to “color” the rope with colored chalk and press its ends to the surface - in this case, the marks made with chalk will remain on the wall. This method will significantly speed up the marking process, which will save time spent on preliminary work. Finishing any surface with PVC panels, be it a wall or a ceiling, begins with assembling the frame.

Frame assembly

Initially, the frame consists of profile connections made from different materials. The following types of frames are distinguished:

  • wooden frame,
  • plastic sheathing,
  • metal profiles,

Each variety has its own advantages and is used depending on preference.

A wooden frame is built infrequently, since such a design has more disadvantages than practical advantages. Wood is afraid of moisture and freezing, as well as drying out due to heat, for this reason the question of the need to install a wooden frame, especially in those rooms in which the influence of climate is noticeably felt (balcony or loggia, for example) is quite controversial.

If there are no contraindications, wooden beams are attached to the covering every 60 centimeters using dowels or impact screws; a lining must be used to level the placement of the boards. In general, this type of frame is inferior in its properties to similar structures made of plastic and metal.

Plastic U-shaped profiles have many advantages, among which are:

  • low cost,
  • light weight (which is especially important when carrying out installation work on the ceiling),
  • ease of fastening,
  • insensitive to moisture and heat.

Such profiles are attached quite easily. According to pre-drawn lines, every 30 centimeters, dowels or screws are installed, which are screwed in every meter. It is important to pay attention to the fact that when joining profiles, especially at an angle, it is necessary to use a hacksaw and a miter box (which is a tray for cutting boards at an angle of 45, 30 and 90 degrees). In this case, the cut will be barely noticeable, and the joints will be smooth and tightly adjacent to each other. Another advantage of the plastic sheathing is that the internal grooves form cable channels for laying communications (wiring for lighting, for example).

A frame made of a metal profile is most suitable for the construction of vertical areas and is most often used for finishing walls with plasterboard (since sheets of this material have significant weight). Due to their light weight, PVC wall panels do not require a powerful and strong frame; for this reason, preference when choosing a design is given to plastic. When using metal, the cable for lighting must be laid in corrugated polyvinyl chloride pipes (PVC) to ensure fire resistance and prevent damage to the braid of power cables from the sharp edges of the metal frame.

Installation requirements

Despite the ease of working with polyvinyl chloride products, the panels also require compliance with certain requirements. Among them the following stand out:

  • before installation, the material must be allowed to rest for a period of time, this is especially true for those conditions when it was stored at a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius,
  • PVC slats are positioned perpendicular to the frame slats,
  • if the room humidity is high, it is necessary to make ventilation cuts in the frame,
  • When installing, gaps of 5 millimeters must be taken into account to take into account temperature changes in PVC coverings,

  • when installing coverings with a pattern, work is always carried out from the left corner to the right (this does not apply to plain coverings),
  • installation work cannot be carried out in those rooms whose internal temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius (that is, the specified PVC panels are categorically not suitable for creating interiors in steam rooms and baths),

Installation of ceiling panels

After the frame has been mounted, it is worth starting to install the PVC panels. The strips are cut along the length of the ceiling and installed in order, starting with the outermost one. The first strip is attached to the very corner, using self-tapping screws, to the transverse profiles, which form additional rigidity of the frame. The next panels are already inserted into the grooves of the previous ones, so the installation is carried out to the end.

There is a possibility that difficulties may arise during the installation of the last panel, since the material will need to be cut to width. There is another option for attaching the final panel: when it is turned over with a fastening lock in the other direction and the groove is trimmed from the side to the required length.

After the installation of all panels has been completed, it is time for the final work, namely the installation of the ceiling plinth. It is installed quite simply: a layer of liquid nails is applied to the inside, after which the plinth is pressed against the finished ceiling and held for 10 seconds for the glue to dry. After that, all that remains is to remove excess glue from the surface and the ceiling is mounted.

It is worth noting that liquid nails on moldings dry out almost instantly, so removal of sagging should be done as quickly as possible.

PVC panels are suitable for the design of any room, since there are a huge variety of models with a wide variety of external styles, but the greatest advantage is their use for interior decoration of the bathroom and toilet due to the distinctive ability of polyvinyl chloride to resist moisture. This is a significant plus in case of flooding of the bathroom by neighbors above. The panels will withstand the load and there will be no need to make major repairs. In addition, PVC boards are easy to clean and are not susceptible to the formation of mold and bacteria, which allows them to be used for kitchen decoration. Soot and fat resulting from cooking can be easily washed off using simple household appliances, so the choice of such material will be correct.

Installation of PVC plates on walls

PVC wall panels allow you to give your premises a cozy interior in a short time and without special costs. The installation process is not too different from similar work on installing a ceiling, and is described literally step by step:

  • a frame made of metal profiles is installed on the wall, previously treated with an antifungal mixture (this is due to the fact that PVC wall slabs are thick and heavy, and to hold them a more powerful frame is required than a plastic one),
  • then the first panel with a corner is inserted into the profile and mounted against the wall. The second and third panels are inserted into the groove at an angle and attached to the first using gluers (this is the name given to plastic brackets with jagged latches that allow you to securely fix the panel on the metal frame guides),
  • after that, all subsequent panels are mounted on the guides in the same way,
  • the last panel is inserted into the U-shaped corner and installed together with it on the frame.

After which finishing work is carried out related to fastening the corners and cornices. It is often possible that the wall must have access to electrical sockets and light switches, which will add some complexity to the installation process. In this case, the installation of boxes and laying of power cables must be done before the installation of PVC boards begins. Then, when covering with panels, it is enough to simply cut out the required size hole for the sockets.

It is important to remember the following at any stage of working with panels:

  • PVC material is quite fragile, so you should not apply significant external force to it when laying the panels. A strong hand press on the panel is enough to cause a crack to appear on its surface that cannot be repaired.
  • The panels must be carefully placed one against the other without any force. If necessary, you can use an improvised tool, for example, a stationery knife, the narrow blade of which will allow you to guide the edges of the plastic PVC panels.

At the moment, PVC board, which can be purchased without difficulty in almost any variation and color, is one of the most popular materials for finishing a room, both indoors and outdoors. Before purchasing, you just need to check the quality of the product by looking at the absence of transverse uneven stripes and the number of stiffeners - to make sure that the product meets the stated expectations, and then the installation of such a coating will not cause trouble, and the PVC panels themselves will last long enough.

Do-it-yourself installation of PVC panels, Construction portal

Walls It is not for nothing that polyvinyl chloride has gained such wide popularity in the construction industry. A wide variety of materials are made from it, which are used in construction and decoration.

PVC wall panels: do-it-yourself installation

Plastic panels (lining) are used for finishing the inside of houses and apartments. They are actively used to give the desired appearance to various rooms, such as balconies, bathrooms, baths, shops, offices. Installing PVC wall panels with your own hands is a simple task that can be done by anyone who has the desire to do the repairs themselves.

What are PVC panels

First of all, you should decide what is hidden behind the abbreviation PVC. There is nothing difficult or scary about this. Under the three letters lies a simple one - polyvinyl chloride, or even simpler, it is a type of plastic. It has many advantages that are successfully used in the manufacture of finishing materials.

PVC wall panels

To be more convincing, we should list the positive qualities that PVC panels have. So:

  1. The technical characteristics of this product allow them to be used in rooms that are exposed to moisture. This material is completely indestructible and does not absorb water. The only thing that can reduce the effectiveness of using plastic panels is improper use of the frame.
  2. If you have sufficiently smooth surfaces, you don’t have to deal with additional wall finishing. Installation of PVC wall panels does not require much effort and time.
  3. They can retain their appearance for quite a long time. Namely, do not fade under the influence of sunlight, do not absorb various fumes. To clean them, you don’t need any special tricks - just wash the products with soapy water and wipe dry.
  4. If a frame is used, additional sound insulation is created. This is achieved due to the air cushion between the wall and the panels. If desired, this space can be used for additional insulation of the room, as well as for hiding communications.
  5. The cost of this material is quite low compared to other types. Do not think that such an attractive price category greatly affects the quality of the product. Naturally, if you purchase panels that have neither factory packaging nor certificates, then you can run into a cheap fake.
  6. Long service life. Yes, such lining can serve for many years. The only thing they are afraid of is temperature changes. This can cause the panels to become unusable. You should also pay attention to mechanical stress, which can damage the integrity of the structure.

PVC panels are very popular due to their low price, as well as many other advantages

It becomes clear that this product can be used in different cases. Of course, it is better to avoid installing panels when making renovations in children's and bedrooms.

Material selection

Any hardware store has a large selection of plastic panels. They can be of various sizes, colors and textures. Modern technologies make it possible to obtain products that can add a certain elegance to any interior.

Plastic panels are an excellent alternative to ceramic tiles for finishing a bathroom, but subject to the correct choice of material

What do you pay attention to when choosing this material:

  • The panels are quite light, but you should immediately be wary if the weight is too light. This may indicate that a fake is taking place. Unfortunately, this happens even in large specialized stores.
  • There should be no flaws on the front or back side. Namely, any cracks, chips, or color inhomogeneities immediately indicate that the product is of poor quality.
  • When choosing PVC panels, you need to pay attention to the release date of different packages. It is better to select ones that have the same markings. Otherwise, significant variation may occur.

On a note! When choosing PVC products, do not hesitate to ask the seller for all the necessary documents. This is a guarantee of safety and long service life of the material.

Various installation methods

To carry out the work of repairing or decorating a room with PVC plastic panels, there are two main options.

1. Installation of the frame.

Lathing for PVC panels

This is the simplest option. Various materials are used for its implementation. The following can be distinguished:

  • Wooden beam. Great for many spaces, but cannot be used in areas with high humidity.
  • Plastic strips. These are specially designed products that allow you to quickly install panels.
  • Metallic profile. The same option is used that allows you to install gypsum board sheets. But this method is quite expensive, although very reliable. It is better to use for the ceiling.

2. Installation of panels without sheathing.

Installation of panels directly on the wall

This method requires some skill and fairly smooth walls. But, if you understand how this process happens, then skills come quite quickly. There is a significant drawback - if one of the elements becomes unusable, you will have to tear down the entire wall.

Each option is selected individually. It is necessary to take into account the size of the room, its shortcomings and climatic features.

Preparation stage

To install plastic panels on walls, a completely ordinary tool is used, which can be found in almost every home owner.

  • tape measure and level;
  • pencil and meter ruler;
  • drills and screwdrivers;
  • self-tapping screws (nails) and dowels;
  • stapler;
  • jigsaw (saw).

Tools and fasteners for installing plastic lining

Don't forget that you will also need consumables. These are primarily drills, bits, files and staples. It is better to prepare everything in advance, then the repair time will be significantly reduced.

Do-it-yourself installation of wall panels should not be carried out immediately after purchase; you need to give them time to adapt to the conditions of the room. To do this, they are unpacked and allowed to rest. It’s better to spend a day on this.

On a note! If during repairs the installation of plastic panels is planned without using a frame, then the surface is first primed. To do this, use solutions that are selected based on the material of the walls.

Making a frame

As already noted, the lathing can be of several types. In principle, they are all similar in their installation conditions. The installed frame allows you to correct significant unevenness and imperfections in the walls. And also create an additional layer of thermal insulation and hide numerous communications.

This method is used for finishing dry rooms with PVC panels. First, guides are made in the form of timber, which are attached to the walls, floor and ceiling. The slats are installed inside the resulting frame, doing this perpendicular to the location of the panels.

All work is similar to creating a frame for drywall. Just like when using wooden beams, the difference in directions of the facing products and the profile is taken into account.

  • Plastic sheathing.

This is the most modern option. PVC guides are attached to the wall using dowels. All of them have a special groove into which a clip is inserted, which holds the lining.

Plastic guides

On a note! It must be taken into account that the distance between the guides should be from 30 to 45 cm.

Installation of plastic elements

After installing the frame, you can begin installing the facing products. Do-it-yourself installation of PVC panels is carried out according to the following scheme (let’s look at the example of a wooden frame):

It becomes clear how to install wall panels on the frame. In the absence of sheathing, everything is done using glue, which is applied to the finishing element. The main thing is to do everything quickly and do not forget that correcting the shortcomings will be extremely difficult.

PVC wall panels: do-it-yourself installation - technology for installing plastic

The installation of PVC wall panels is easy to do with your own hands, but you must follow the rules for installing lathing. Then the repair will serve you for many years.

Instructions for interior wall decoration with PVC plastic panels

Wall decoration with plastic panels is now very popular. But before deciding to choose this option, it is worth studying information about the properties of the material and the technology of its use. At first glance, you can find a lot of information about this finishing option, but often it is distorted or presented in a form that is inconvenient for perception. For this reason, you should be careful when choosing a source of information.

Plastic as a material

Wall decoration with plastic panels has its advantages and disadvantages. They must be taken into account when making the final decision. The finishing material has the following advantages:

  • Absolutely harmless. Many people are afraid of plastic because it is an unnatural material. Modern technologies that make it possible to produce harmless products are simpler and cheaper than old ones. For this reason, it is extremely difficult to find dangerous material even among fakes.
  • The wall panels for interior decoration are very beautiful. There are many options for colors and textures. In addition, manufacturers are releasing new seamless options that are very different from the usual office panels. You can choose a wood finish, plain or colored. Photo printing is also applied to the coating.
  • Possibility of use in cramped conditions. Plastic panels for interior decoration are perfect for various niches and other corners of an apartment or house where it is inconvenient to work with other materials.
  • The panels are easily mounted together with ventilation grilles and sockets. In any color, these elements look natural and are not noticeable.
  • Plastic is perfect for finishing bathrooms and other wet rooms. The finishing of walls and ceilings is durable, does not require complex maintenance, and can be used at low temperatures (for example, on an uninsulated balcony).

PVC panels look pretty good for their price

The disadvantages include the following negative points:

  • Flammability. The material is difficult to set on fire, but when exposed to fire it maintains combustion and releases a large amount of gases dangerous to humans.
  • The panels don't breathe. They completely block the movement of air through the walls, which is necessary to ensure normal ventilation. Because of this property, the type of finish is not recommended for use in the bedroom and children's room.
  • Insects can live in the voids of the panels. This problem is especially relevant for the southern regions.
  • The need to use special tools for cutting and certain skills during installation.
  • Decorating walls with PVC panels with your own hands requires careful preparation of the base.

The finishing can look very non-trivial!

Having considered all the advantages and disadvantages of the material, you should calmly make an informed decision about the possibility of using this type of finish.

What tools will you need?

It is worth preparing to work with PVC panels. First of all, you will need to find a special tool:

  • Circular Saw. If you can’t find it, you can use a jigsaw. The file or disk must have fine teeth (“clean cut”). It is preferable to use a saw. The jigsaw file is highly flexible, so the cut can turn out wavy.
  • Jigsaw cutter with angles of 45 and 90 degrees.
  • Construction stapler for cladding on wooden sheathing.
  • Rubber mallet with a hook rule. The same tool is used for installing laminate flooring. Needed to “rip out” jammed panels. Doing this with your hands can easily damage the panel or sheathing.
  • A plaster spatula used to bend the finishing profile when installing the last plank. Spatula length 80-120 cm.

Also when performing work you will need:

  • pencil and tape measure;
  • building level;
  • square;
  • fastening elements (self-tapping screws, dowel-nails, clamps);
  • screwdriver;
  • perforator;
  • sealant;
  • antiseptic.

Installation of plastic panels for wall decoration

Plastic can perfectly replace wooden decorative elements and other finishing options. But it must be fastened in strict accordance with technology. Decorative wall panels will help make your home cozy and beautiful.

3 ways to attach panels to the wall

The walls in the bathroom and other rooms, as well as the ceiling, are decorated with plastic panels in the following order:

  1. preparation of the base;
  2. marking;
  3. lathing device;
  4. installation of start and finish profiles;
  5. installation of all other planks;
  6. facing of slopes;
  7. fixing skirting boards.

Installation instructions for PVC panels

Preparing the base

Work with plastic begins with removing the old coating. In order for the finishing coating to have an attractive appearance without distortions and other troubles, you will need to carefully seal all the cracks in the walls and ceilings and eliminate any unevenness.

Cleaning the surface of the walls is necessary to prevent the appearance of dust, mildew and mold

Before finishing the room, it is necessary to determine the location of the frame racks. Finishing ceilings and walls with plastic panels involves marking in the following order:

  1. Mark a point at a distance of 1-2 cm from the level of the floor or walls. A line is drawn along the perimeter through this point. For marking accuracy, use a building level.
  2. When marking walls, the same line must be drawn under the ceiling.
  3. From the bottom line, in increments of 40-50 cm, parallel lines are drawn to the entire height.

This marking is suitable for attaching panels vertically. The cladding is always attached perpendicular to the frame, so if it is necessary to arrange the cladding elements horizontally, vertical markings are made.

Horizontal and vertical installation types

Sheathing device

Most often, wood is used as lathing for panels for interior wall decoration. In this case, the slats must be treated in advance with an antiseptic composition to protect them from destruction. Using a puncher, holes are made along the marking lines for fasteners with a distance of 50 cm. The frame slats are secured to the wall. If it is necessary to lay wiring under the trim, this must be taken into account at this stage:

  1. provide fastenings for wires;
  2. check that they do not protrude beyond the plane of the sheathing.

Be sure to check the horizontality of the sheathing

When using a metal C-profile as a sheathing, you will need to additionally purchase elements for fastening. They are usually sold as a set. The metal is fixed to the base with self-tapping screws in dowels. All work must be performed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

To increase the thermal insulation or sound insulation of walls, special mats can be laid between the frame slats. They are fixed depending on the type of material used. For different types, both fastening with dowels and with an adhesive composition can be used.

Fastening the slats

The first plastic strip needs to be secured in the most illuminated and visible corner. Most often, this is the one located opposite the entrance to the room. Measurements are taken using a tape measure. The panel is cut to the required length with a special tool (usually a circular saw).

One edge of the strip is inserted into a special side molding. This element is designed to ensure mutual fastening of the panels, which are located on opposite sides of the corner. The element with the molding is applied to the corner and secured to the sheathing on the back side.

Next you need to connect the first panel to the second. To do this, a tongue-and-groove system is again used. The joint is pressed tightly and the plank is fixed to a wooden or metal frame. All subsequent elements are mounted using the same technology. To ensure maximum tightness of the joints, it is recommended to lubricate the side edges with silicone before installing the panel. When installing the last part, it is worth checking whether it is the right width. If necessary, the element is cut to width. The last panel is not secured to the sheathing. It must be snapped onto the finishing element. If necessary, all joints are treated with silicone (sealant).

Installation of panels on the frame using clamps and clips

Accessories must be installed to complete the installation. Such elements include baseboards and their caps, corner elements. The latter are purchased together with the panels and heated on top of them.

Accessories for panels will give your decoration a neat, finished look

To make holes for switches and sockets, use a sharp knife. They cut out holes of the required size.

Installation of panels with glue

If necessary, finishing elements can be fixed directly to the wall without the use of lathing. In this case, increased requirements are placed on the foundation. It will take more time to prepare it, since the surface must be perfectly flat.

Before starting work, purchase special glue. It is allowed to use liquid nails for installation. It is important to check the composition of the substance in the store. It should not contain solvents that destroy plastic elements.

Installation of lamellas with glue

The work is performed in the following order:

  1. cleaning the base from old cladding;
  2. treatment with antibacterial putty or a layer of primer that contains components that can protect against mold and mildew;
  3. drying the base;
  4. preparation of the adhesive composition in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging;
  5. the choice of working tool is carried out depending on the consistency of the glue: roller, brush, spatula;
  6. work begins with corner elements;
  7. the glue is applied to a small area at a time (equal to approximately 1 panel) so that it does not have time to dry;
  8. a corner piece is secured to which an ordinary element is mounted using grooves;
  9. the panels are pressed against the wall with your hands for a short time, during which the adhesive solution has time to set;
  10. install all other panels;
  11. install decorative elements, coat the seams with silicone sealant.

In addition to installation with glue and lathing, there are several other methods that professional workers use. But they have not become widespread. In conclusion, we can give some general advice:

  • The panels are recommended for finishing balconies, loggias, bathrooms, hallways and living rooms. For bedrooms and children's rooms, you should pay attention to more breathable materials.
  • It is best to use seamless plastic in rooms with air conditioning or a forced ventilation system.
  • In a bedroom for adults, it is permissible to use the material for certain sections of the walls.
  • It is not acceptable to use the elements in the kitchen. In this case, grease and other substances will settle on the surface of the panels, which will become an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.

Decorating walls with PVC plastic panels: step-by-step instructions

Decorating walls with plastic panels allows you to create a pleasant atmosphere on a small budget. We outline the entire procedure step by step.

Plastic products have many advantages and are rightly popular in construction work. Users highlight the following positive aspects of the material:

  • PVC panels for walls are not made from toxic and harmful components. The absence of harmful fumes allows you to decorate the walls of residential premises.
  • Surfaces finished with plastic are very beautiful. Manufacturers produce a wide range of panels with a variety of patterns.
  • Products can be painted, covered with material, and high-quality images can be applied.
  • Plastic consists of cells, so it has a fairly high thermal insulation value.
  • Coating modules are manufactured with high precision, which allows you to quickly cover large areas.
  • The panels can be mounted at any angle to the ceiling - horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
  • All kinds of fittings look acceptable on plastic - electrical sockets and switches, ventilation grilles, etc.
  • Plastic tolerates frost well and does not deteriorate on open balconies for many years.
  • The material is used for finishing walls and ceilings in wet rooms (showers, bathrooms, swimming pools).
  • Plastic can be used to decorate walls made of any coating without preliminary finishing of the surface.
  • The plastic is easy to clean, the seams between the panels are small, and dirt does not collect there, which is appreciated in kitchens and domestic areas.
Despite numerous advantages, plastic PVC panels for walls are not considered an ideal coating. Users should be aware of the negative aspects of the material:
  1. Before cladding, it is necessary to install a sheathing on the wall, which takes a lot of time to level.
  2. Working with the material requires patience and care; the material is processed with a special tool.
  3. The material does not breathe, it does not have the correct ratio of moisture resistance to vapor permeability. Therefore, in some rooms (for example, bedrooms) it is not recommended to decorate the walls with this material.
  4. The surface of the plastic glares, because of this it cannot be used in a child’s room, the child will be irritated.
  5. In some places, the use of PVC panels is prohibited by fire services, for example, in corridors, on escape routes. The material burns poorly, but when exposed to high temperatures, the plastic releases toxic fumes.

Types of PVC panels for walls

Plastic panels are distinguished according to many parameters, but most often they are classified according to the method of decorating the front sheet and the size of the modules.

Depending on the size, plastic lining, panels and tiles are distinguished:

  • Plastic lining. These are long sheets of rectangular shape. The panel is formed by two plates with partitions and hollow channels between them. Sample length - 3-12 m, width - 100-500 mm, thickness - 8-12 mm. Lining is used for finishing walls and ceilings. For fastening, it is recommended to lath the wall.
  • . They differ from lining in dimensions, the most common sizes are 1220x2440x3.2 mm. The front side imitates tiles.
  • Plastic tiles. Available in square shape with dimensions from 0.30x0.30 m to 1x1 m.
The classification of panels according to the decoration of the front panel depends on the method of applying the image:
  1. Thermal transfer pattern on the panel. It is distinguished by its bright colors and the ability to maintain its original appearance for a long time. With its help you can decorate a room in a specific style. The coating technology involves transferring a special thermal film with a pattern onto the plastic and then covering the surface with varnish, which protects the material from mechanical stress and household chemicals.
  2. Offset drawing. To create an offset print on a panel, a special roller is used that resembles a typographic print. The image on the panel is covered with two layers of varnish.
  3. Panel lamination. Such products are characterized by high image quality. The special film creates a three-dimensional effect and has a varied texture. The film is glued to the plastic with a special glue. After lamination, the panel's steam and moisture resistance increases. Such modules are the most durable of the entire range of plastic products.
The panels differ in the type of joint between adjacent products and can form three connection options:
  • Seamless panels. The most common type of material. After finishing the walls with PVC panels, the surface will be smooth, but the quality level of a stretch ceiling will not be achieved - the joint will still be visible. To obtain a high-quality seamless surface, the panels are carefully selected and their joints are checked in the store. You should also carefully make the covering sheathing. Seamless panels are available in widths of 20, 25, 30 and 33 cm.
  • Relief lining. It is distinguished by a relief connection between the individual modules. The material is used when there is possible deformation of the base surface, for example, when the house shrinks. The divergence of the seam between the panels is masked by the relief connection of the panels. Sheets with a width of 10, 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 33 cm are sold in the markets.
  • Panels with rustication. They have the properties of a seamless and embossed material. They differ from other types of panels in that instead of a groove or protrusion, there are chamfers at the ends of the sheets.

Criteria for choosing plastic panels for walls

In construction stores, the range of PVC panels is always large, so approach the purchase of goods responsibly. Pay attention to the following factors:
  1. Before attaching PVC panels to the wall, check that the front part is free of scratches, cuts, stains and other defects.
  2. Panels with a thick front sheet and a large number of stiffeners will be more durable. High-quality panels are heavier due to numerous stiffening ribs.
  3. Choose sheets with even edges; their condition affects the appearance of the panel. Please note that strength and PVC panels are incompatible concepts; this material should not be used in public places.
  4. There should be no visible marks of stiffeners or other defects on the surface of the panel.
  5. The panels must be connected to each other tightly and securely. With a seamless connection, after joining the sheets, the gaps are barely visible.
  6. The surface of a high-quality sheet is free of unpainted areas and has clear patterns.
  7. A high-quality panel is expensive. Cheap panels are made from low-grade material and low-quality glue. The leaves emit toxic substances and can provoke an allergic reaction in the body.
  8. If you have a choice, purchase products from well-known brands.
  9. Bend the sheet so that it bends by 30-50%, and then examine the place of deformation. There are no deflections left on a high-quality panel.
  10. Do not mix up ceiling and wall panels. The first type has lower strength; when pressed with a finger, the front sheet will easily bend. You can also distinguish panels by length: ceiling panels are produced in lengths of 6 or 12 m, wall panels - 2.7, 3 or 6 m.
  11. Wall panels with a thickness of at least 10 mm, the thickness of ceiling panels is less.
  12. You can find PVC panels in a wide variety of colors on the market. If it’s difficult to make a choice, buy white sheets, they look good with any color. Plastic panels are often marked with patterns that imitate a cut of natural material or are made as patterns.
  13. Too contrasting designs can cause irritation over time.
  14. Panels with drawings must be purchased with a reserve for joining the images. Expensive panels with patterns can be embossed; such samples are not recommended for use in the kitchen due to the difficulty of cleaning the surface.
  15. The surface of plastic panels can be glossy, matte or semi-gloss. The finishing option of the outer layer does not affect the quality of the material.

Technology for installing PVC panels on walls

The choice of fastening plastic panels depends on many factors - the quality of surface finish, the weight of the panels, the purpose of the room, etc. Each fixation option has its own characteristics, but there are also general operations. These include choosing a tool and purchasing auxiliary elements.

Tools and materials for laying PVC panels on walls

Without properly selected equipment, it is impossible to obtain a high-quality surface. Stock up on the following equipment in advance:
  • A jigsaw or circular saw with a fine tooth. The saw is preferable due to the rigidity of the cutting tool. The jigsaw blade may become deformed during the cut, and the cutting line will turn out wavy.
  • Staple gun (construction stapler) for attaching the slab to wood sheathing.
  • A special rubber mallet for dismantling the panel, for pulling out the panel jammed in the grooves. Without it, you can damage the installation profile or sheathing elements.
  • Plaster spatula 80-120, which is used to bend the finishing profile when installing the last board.
  • Construction level for monitoring the position of the sheathing and panels in the vertical plane.
  • Drill for making mounting holes in the wall.
To simplify the installation of PVC panels on the wall, it is recommended to purchase additional profiles that will speed up the work and improve the quality of the surface:
  1. Starting profile - is attached first and is the base level along which the panels are aligned.
  2. Finishing profile - installed last after attaching the outermost sheet.
  3. External corner profile - allows you to form beautiful protruding corners of the room.
  4. Internal corner profile - installed in the inner corner of the room.
  5. Docking profiles - used to extend a plastic sheet or to create a mounting surface on a wall for installing a mirror.

Laying plastic panels on the wall on a frame

One of the options for covering a wall with panels is to attach plastic to a frame. The lathing allows you to install the covering without leveling the walls in any room.

The basis for the plastic coating is wooden beams or metal profiles. Wooden slats are chosen with a width of 40-60 mm and a thickness of 20-25 mm. For sheathing, buy well-dried lumber a little longer than the height of the wall; it is always easier to cut off the excess than to add the missing part. It is also advisable to impregnate all wooden blocks with a water-repellent composition.

Metal profiles are sold in standard lengths, so the choice of length is limited. For sheathing, it is recommended to use a C-shaped rack profile. The material of the slats depends on the purpose of the room. For example, if stainless steel profiles are installed in the bathroom, the wood will quickly rot.

Wall covering with PVC panels is carried out as follows:

  • Clean the walls of old decorative coating. Inspect the surface for the presence of fungus or mold, remove the damaged surface if necessary.
  • Treat the wall with an antiseptic.
  • The placement of profiles on the wall depends on the orientation of the panels - horizontal or vertical. In a vertical orientation, the slats are first attached to the top and bottom of the walls.
  • The bottom rail is fixed near the floor to secure the baseboard. Then, in the corners of the wall, the walls are aligned vertically and vertical profiles are attached, while their outer surfaces should lie in the same plane with the surfaces of the already fixed slats.
  • Allowable gaps under the ceiling depend on the method of covering the ceiling. If the ceiling is finished with PVC panels, make the gap wide. Otherwise, attach the bars as high as possible.
  • When fixing the slats, it is necessary to control their position in the horizontal plane with a level and their vertical position using a plumb line. Any gaps between the profiles and the surface are sealed with wooden spacers.
  • The internal battens should always be perpendicular to the long side of the slabs. They are placed in increments of 40-60 cm. During installation, the bars must be parallel to the slats fixed along the perimeter of the wall, and located in the same plane as the upper and lower slats.
  • Using a plumb bob, mark vertical lines on the wall in the corners of the room to attach the starting and finishing or corner profiles. Attach the starting (corner) profile to the vertical batten with a stapler, guided by the vertical mark.
  • Attach the horizontal starting profile to the top profile. Measure the distance between the top starting profile and the floor.
  • Cut the panel sheet from the blank to size.
  • Insert the first sheet into the groove of the starting profile.
  • Check the vertical position of the sheets with a level.
  • If the results are satisfactory, secure the panel to the sheathing with a stapler. Insert the second panel into the groove of the first sheet, slide until the seam between them disappears and secure. Check its position in the vertical plane.
  • Repeat the operation to lay all the panels until the end of the wall.
  • The last sheet is attached in a special way. First, attach the finishing profile to the sheathing. Then measure the gap between the penultimate sheet and the finishing profile and cut the extra piece along the sheet to size. To install, bend the panel slightly and place it in the seats of the sheet and finishing profile. The last sheet is not attached and is held in place only by the profiles.
  • If it is necessary to finish the walls of the room along the perimeter, a corner profile is installed in the corner, attached to the wall, and then cladding of the next wall begins.

Fastening PVC panels to walls using tape

The opinion that plastic modules are attached only to the sheathing is long outdated. Under certain conditions, do-it-yourself wall finishing with PVC panels is done on soft lathing or using the adhesive method.

Installation on a soft sheathing involves the use of double-sided foam tape with a width of 60 mm and a thickness of 2-4 mm. Scotch tape is very viscous and elastic; when a load is applied, it stretches, and after removal it returns to its original form.

Laying panels on soft sheathing is done as follows:

  1. Clean the walls from paint, wallpaper, and peeling plaster.
  2. Level the surface with putty. Irregularities and protrusions with a depth of no more than half the thickness of the tape are allowed.
  3. Cut the panel blanks to the height of the wall.
  4. Draw vertical lines on the walls along which the panels will be aligned.
  5. Glue the tape to the wrong side of the sheet, around the perimeter.
  6. Remove the protective tape from the tape and glue the panel to the wall as quickly as possible, following the mark on the wall.
  7. Check the verticality of the panel with a level.
  8. Fix the adjacent panels in a similar way, check that they are vertical and that there are no differences with the adjacent sheet.
  9. After finishing the work, attach the plinth to the top and bottom of the lining. Another option is to install starter profiles instead of baseboards.

Fixing PVC panels to walls with glue

This method is used if the wall is perfectly leveled with putty or finished with plasterboard sheets. The advantage of an adhesive connection is the absence of lathing, which allows you to maintain the size of the room.

The panels are glued as follows:

  • Clean the wall of old coating. If the surface is painted with oil paint, then the coating does not need to be removed, but only primed.
  • Carefully level the surface into one plane using putty, layer thickness - 2-4 mm. If the base wall is poorly processed, all irregularities will appear on the panels.
  • Prime the surface with an antiseptic primer.
  • Attach the starting profile to the top or bottom of the ceiling.
  • Clean the surface of the panel from dust.
  • Apply glue to the underside of the sample in wavy lines. Wait 5 minutes, then install into the starting profile and glue to the wall.
  • To form the corners, use ordinary 20x20 mm plastic corners without lining grooves.
The process of finishing the wall with the adhesive method is accelerated, but the glue does not hold very heavy modules. You should also not use adhesive joints in the kitchen, shower, or gym.

While working, use the following recommendations:

  1. Bring the material into the room several hours before work, this way you can avoid deformation of the coating after installation.
  2. It is advisable to finish the walls after finishing the ceiling and floor, this will make it easier to finish the corners of the room.
  3. Various components can be hidden behind PVC panels; provide removable panels to access them.
  4. Determine in advance the locations of sockets and switches and cut openings in the sheets.

When designing interior finishing work, the question of choosing a material for such work often arises. Today, the construction market offers a large selection of finishing materials. But it is worth remembering that the material for such work is selected based on the use of the room, and using the wrong type can lead to destruction or rapid deterioration of the appearance of the entire finish as a whole. One of the universal finishing materials is PVC panels. Since the appearance of this material, this finish has been quite popular for a number of reasons.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) panels are a type of finishing material made on the basis of polyvinyl chloride with the addition of various additives. In hardware stores, these plastic panels are called lining. It is used for finishing any building elements, as well as premises in general. The use of PVC panels is mainly used in places where dry finishing is required; this material can also be used for both interior and exterior work.

Plastic PVC panels

Types of PVC panels

This finishing material can be divided into two types:

  • Ceiling panels;
  • Wall panels;

Their difference is that Shelf panels are thinner . This is explained by the fact that when mounted on the ceiling, the lining will not bear any loads, so the production of panels with a large thickness will not be required for ceiling decoration. Also, the ceiling lining is significantly lighter in weight, and this greatly simplifies the installation process, and at the same time reduces the weight of the entire suspended structure.

Also, PVC panels can be divided according to the method of connecting the lamellas:

  • Seamless;
  • Embossed;
  • Lamels with chamfer;

Pros and cons of PVC panels

When choosing a finishing material, you should know and take into account all the positive and negative qualities. For PVC panels the following can be noted: positive traits :

  • Easy installation;
  • Long service life;
  • Availability;
  • Large selection of colors;
  • Does not require special care;
  • This material is suitable for finishing any room;

Along with positive qualities there is also a number of disadvantages , which you should pay attention to when choosing it:

  • Low impact resistance;
  • This material is not resistant to ultraviolet radiation. That is, it is not advisable to install the lining in places that are constantly exposed to the sun;

It is worth noting that such shortcomings can be removed depending on the pricing policy. Therefore, when choosing PVC panels, great attention should be paid to these parameters.

Surface mounting methods

Before installing PVC panels indoors, you need to decide on the mounting method. Here you should know that the panels can be attached in three ways.

  • Vertical mount;
  • Horizontal mount;
  • Diagonal fastening (rare);

The method of fastening must be determined in advance based on the design features of the room. This is necessary in order to properly mount the frame. In some cases, if it is necessary to sheathe a column, then only diagonal fastening is used. In most cases, when installing lining, the method of fastening depends only on the wishes of the customer.

Panel Fastening Tools

When fastening PVC panels yourself, you will need a tool that needs to be prepared in advance so as not to interrupt the sequence of work for a long period. To complete the work you will need:

  • Hammer or drill;
  • Bulgarian (angle grinder);
  • Rule;
  • Level;
  • Roulette;
  • Stapler;

Any of these tools is necessary, since when performing some tasks manually, the quality of the entire finish as a whole can seriously suffer, which will entail additional costs for the purchase of material. Therefore, you should not neglect such nuances.

Choosing a frame for PVC panels

In order to carry out all installation work efficiently, you should first familiarize yourself with the preparatory work. The installation of wall or ceiling panels depends 90% on a high-quality frame for them. It is intended for fastening panels, since such material is not used on the main surface. In some cases, it also performs the function of leveling the main surface.

The frame can be made from wooden slats or from a metal profile. This profile is used for drywall work. The difference between these materials lies primarily in the pricing policy. But it is also worth noting other nuances.

Wooden frame It is made faster and will cost a little less, but before installing it, additional costs and time will be required for fire-prevention wood treatment. Also, if the rail was purchased raw, after its installation it may change shape. As a result, more dowels will be required to secure it.

Main advantage metal frame is its durability and ease of operation. It does not require any additional work with it.

It is also worth noting that if the walls are uneven, the wooden slats will require more than the metal profile. A metal frame is simply necessary in places with high humidity, since under such conditions the tree can be affected by fungus and the entire frame can collapse in a short period.

To choose the right material for the frame, you will also need to take into account the location and type of wiring if the work is carried out indoors.

To properly install PVC panels, you initially need to make a lathing (frame). This is done as follows. First, a visual inspection of the surface where the panels will be installed is carried out. At this stage, it is necessary to identify defects in the wall and, if any, they need to be eliminated. Afterwards a check for irregularities is carried out. This will require a rule and a level. To determine the inclination of the sheathed surface, you can also use a plumb line.

Checking the unevenness of the wall

At the next stage, you need to decide on the method of fastening the lining sheets. If horizontal fastening of the panels was chosen, the frame slats must be installed vertically. When the panels are mounted vertically, the slats are mounted horizontally. Marking is also carried out to determine how many slats are required for the sheathed surface. The slats should be placed at a distance of no more than 50 cm from each other. A necessary condition is that the first and last slats must be placed in the corners of the sheathed surface.

When all the nuances have been determined, you can begin the actual work. The first rail is installed from the corner and secured to the wall using dowels. During installation, it is necessary to strictly control the evenness of the installation using a level. The next rail is mounted in the opposite corner. After which, a thread is stretched between them, and all subsequent slats are installed along it. The end result will be a frame onto which PVC panels can be attached.

Before installing the panel sheets, corner moldings are initially installed and stapled to the frame. In another embodiment, starting moldings can be attached along the perimeter of the sheathed surface if the sheathed area does not have corners.

PVC panels are mounted using a stapler. They are connected to each other using side slats.

Installation of PVC panels on the ceiling is carried out in the same way as on the walls. A significant difference is that all work is carried out above head level. At the initial stage, it is necessary to assemble a frame for the ceiling decoration. In such cases, it is more advisable to use wooden slats, since it will be a little easier to work with them, but do not forget that the metal sheathing will still last longer, so you can choose it. Also, before starting work, the method of fastening the sheets is determined. For such work, any fastening method can be suitable. This parameter depends more on the design of PVC panels.

The frame for the ceiling cladding is made in the same way as for the walls. When constructing the ceiling sheathing, the routing of electrical wires should be taken into account. Since PVC ceiling sheets are thinner than wall sheets, it is necessary to provide additional elements for a chandelier or spotlights in the frame.

Just like in the wall version, moldings (ceiling plinths) are attached along the perimeter of the ceiling.

Installation of ceiling plinths on lathing

Fastening is done to staples using a stapler for wooden sheathing and to self-tapping screws for metal sheathing.

Fastening PVC panels to columns

Sometimes there is a need to cover a column with PVC panels. This is a rather labor-intensive task if the column has a round shape. But such work can also be done independently. To cover the column, you will need to calculate the required amount of metal profile, since a wooden frame cannot be used. The whole point of column cladding is the correct installation of the frame.

The metal profile has a U-shape. You need to cut triangles along its edges on both sides. This can be done using a grinder or metal scissors. This way the profile can be bent into a perfect circle. Its fastening is carried out using special metal plates, which are initially attached along the entire circumference. Then the profile is mounted on these plates.

Fastening the lining in such cases is usually used diagonally, since the sheets of panels are rectangular in shape and can be easily attached to a round surface.

Fastening PVC panels to a metal profile

To install PVC panels on a metal frame, the first thing you need is to correctly calculate the required amount of profile. To begin with, you need to secure profile guides (UD) along the entire perimeter of the sheathed surface. Their installation is carried out along a pre-marked line. If you have a laser level, this work can be completed much easier and faster.

The next step will be the installation of wall profiles (CD), they are located at a distance of 50 cm from each other along the guide profiles. When the installation of wall profiles is completed, they are secured using fastening plates every 30 - 40 cm. Such a frame is in many ways reminiscent of sheathing for plasterboard.

Installation of metal lathing under PVC panels

At the next stage, PVC panels are cut and installation is carried out. They are fastened using self-tapping screws to the profile. It is important not to forget that when assembling the sheathing, the wall profiles should always be mounted perpendicular to the direction of fastening the panels.

As with wood framing, installation of starter moldings is also required if the surface does not have corners or turns.

Fastening PVC panels to metal sheathing

An unpleasant moment when working with metal profiles is attaching panels to them. This process is very labor-intensive and time-consuming.

How to attach PVC panels without lathing

Sometimes there are cases when PVC panels are mounted without a frame. But such fastening is not very popular since the lining sheets will repeat all the unevenness of the sheathed surface. But for decoration the following method is used. A sheet of plywood, chipboard or particle board is initially attached to the surface to be sheathed. This is necessary in order to level and strengthen the entire sheathed surface. Next, a sheet of lining is cut to the specified dimensions and attached to a wooden base using a stapler or self-tapping screws.

How to decorate the walls of your home? This question often arises when it’s time for another renovation or when buying a new apartment. There are many answers in my head: paint or

glue wallpaper, cover it with decorative tiles or apply decorative plaster. Most of these options require preliminary preparation work. Which entail both investment investments and labor costs. And oh, how I don’t want to do this.

There is an alternative method to solve this problem - covering the walls with PVC panels. This is a universal finishing material for balconies and loggias, utility rooms and corridors, hallways and even some areas of the kitchen. Wall cladding with PVC panels is an aesthetically pleasing look at an affordable price. The material is new on the sales market, but is quite suitable for finishing residential and technical premises.

PVC panels as an option for wall cladding

We found out that cladding walls with PVC panels is the easiest and most economical way to cladding the walls of a residential or utility room. With their help you can decorate almost any wall surface including a bath or shower room. They easily lay on brick or plaster, facing tiles.

Moreover, using PVC panels for walls, installation can be done with your own hands. It does not present particularly difficult moments and does not require certain skills. The need to level the surfaces of the walls disappears in principle, which makes renovations in the apartment easy, quick and not labor-intensive.

But still, in order for the repair work to be successful, you need to know exactly how to attach PVC panels to the wall, and in what ways this can be done. Our article can help you with this. In it we will try to give you all the comprehensive instructions and advice on installation, features and characteristics.

Wall cladding with PVC panels is used very often today. And this is not an accident, but, most likely, a pattern. Why do buyers prefer this building material? They have already managed to appreciate a number of undeniable advantages of these panels:

  • resistance to the effects of humidity - absolute;
  • level of mechanical strength - high;
  • susceptibility to the influence of temperature or atmospheric influences on them is zero;
  • are not exposed to ultraviolet radiation;
  • ease of installation work;
  • the ability to use the material for finishing both inside and outside.

Production technology

Manufacturers of PVC panels use two main components as a basis: the first is table salt, and the second is petroleum products. Therefore, the technology must imply environmental friendliness, as well as the purity of the material.

The construction of internal partitions from panels gives them good strength, so their use in houses, apartments or public buildings is acceptable. The use of special seamless technology in production makes it possible to make the joints between them almost invisible. If we talk about the strength of the material, then it is quite sufficient so that various lamps for additional lighting with electrical sockets and switches can be mounted on its surface.

When installing PVC panels, there are locks on one side and grooves on the other. They are provided by the manufacturers so that the panels can be fastened without the use of additional devices and directly onto the frame using self-tapping screws.

As for the thickness of the panels, it varies from 8 ml to 62 ml. This means their scope is wide. If the surface is treated with hot lamination, then their wear resistance increases and the adhesion process between the wall and the panel is enhanced.

Types and classification

Wall panels are divided into three main types:

If we consider all types of panels based on materials, they can be divided into two classes:

  1. Polyvinyl chloride.
  2. Chipboard, MDF, fiberboard materials are the result of wood processing.

Features and Properties

Laminated chipboard panels. This class of material is considered one of the worst in terms of mechanical strength; it is not environmentally friendly and hygroscopic. It crumbles very easily and can be easily damaged even during transportation. Moreover, resins of synthetic origin are used in its manufacture. Therefore, it is not advisable to use it in residential premises.

MDF panels. Newer and more modern compared to fiberboard. They are more resistant to stress and less hygroscopic. Manufacturers use lignin as a base, which is obtained from wood. After wood, it is the second most environmentally friendly material. The appearance of the panels imitates various types of wood, which gives them uniqueness and style.

For walls - the most moisture-resistant material of all types. They found their main application as cladding for those rooms in which there is a high level of humidity. Among the disadvantages, we can only note their cold appearance: plain options, granite or marble. But they look good for exterior wall cladding.

Stages of preparatory work

Before attaching PVC panels to the wall, you must carefully take and calculate all measurements of the house or apartment and assess their condition. Only after an assessment can we determine in which direction the fastening process will take place, taking into account the size of the cladding as such and the features of all the walls of the building. If there are openings and other non-standard structural elements, then there is a possibility of additional costs and amounts of material.

Before attaching PVC panels to the wall, experienced specialists recommend keeping them in any room at room temperature for at least half an hour. The surfaces where you plan to mount the panels must be thoroughly cleaned of dust, dirt and other debris.

Before attaching the PVC panels to the wall, the surface of the facing tiles must be sanded, the wallpaper must be cleaned and any residues removed if your panels are attached with glue. Each panel is covered with a protective film on top; it is better not to remove it during installation work, so you can preserve the presentation of the material.

Tools

Before you begin installing PVC panels, prepare the necessary tools:

  1. Electric drill with a drill and a special tip. Diameter equal to the dowel head.
  2. Hand-held electric saw.
  3. Electric screwdriver. You can use a simple screwdriver.
  4. Correct building level.
  5. Stapler. Maybe a hammer.
  6. Marking pencil, chalk, tape measure.
  7. Metal scissors.
  8. Hacksaw for carving wood or metal.
  9. Ladder.

Methods for attaching PVC panels to the wall

PVC panels are fastened to the wall using profiles, nails or gluing. These are the most basic types of panel fastening when finishing walls.

Fastening with staples or nails

Installing PVC panels on the wall using staples or nails is the most commonly used method. To use this technology, the construction of sheathing is required. To build the sheathing, you will need wooden beams with a cross-section of 40x25 cm.

With their help, a frame is created on the surface of the wall. The beams are attached perpendicular to the panel surface 50 cm from one another to the wall with screws. One point you need to pay attention to.

In this option, the walls are leveled using the panels. This means that the sheathing must be erected perfectly evenly, strictly according to the level. Next, it is advisable to start attaching PVC panels to the wall from the corner of the building structure, securing the finishing element in it with a bracket or nail. The direction does not matter, just make sure that the comb of the PVC panel is directed in the direction where the installation movement is directed.

If you start attaching PVC panels to the wall, then make sure that the panels are pressed more tightly to each other. To make the wall cladding look neater in the corners or where PVC panels adjoin window, door or other openings, use special starting and end moldings.

They are on sale, you won't have any problems finding them. When laying the last strip of the panel, you need to apply a little force to push it into the finishing element or corner, as well as into the previous strip.

Fastening panels with mounting profile

The technology for installing panels in this way involves the use of profiles special for plastic panels. They are made of either plastic or galvanized steel. During

For installation, they must be attached to the wall as in the first method.

Then you need to insert the corner profile; it is snapped to the rail with special clips. This is also where you need to insert the first piece of PVC panel and attach it to the rail using a clip. Next, all subsequent strips of material are inserted into all previous ones and are also attached.

Fastening PVC panels with glue

To use this cladding method, the wall must be perfectly flat, clean and dry. If this is not the case, but you have chosen this particular method of cladding, then before gluing you need to prepare all surfaces of the walls. Next, the panel is smeared with glue evenly and thoroughly, then attached to the wall.

The panels can also be glued to the frame. Then there is no need to level the walls; the slats or lathing are covered with a layer of glue. In order to glue PVC panels to the wall, only specially designed glue is used. It is otherwise called “liquid nails”.

Under no circumstances should you use glue that contains a cleaner or solvent. When adjusting the height of PVC panels, do not forget that they can expand in winter and summer.

Therefore, you need to leave small gaps. In a room with high humidity, using slats as sheathing, make small cuts for air circulation.

Shape and dimensions

PVC slatted panels for walls have the following dimensions: the width of each of them is 10÷30 centimeters, length - 2.5÷6 meters and thickness - 8÷25 millimeters.

Sheet panels. Their typical dimensions are: 122÷244 cm, 260÷100 cm, 200÷100 cm, 130÷100 cm, 260÷490 cm, 130÷49 cm, 128÷98 cm, 260÷98 cm. Thickness 3÷6 mm .

Square PVC panels for walls have the following sizes: 30÷30 cm, 30÷60 cm, 15÷60 cm, 98÷98 cm, 98÷49 cm.

Wall decoration with PVC panels

Plastic panels are a material of non-natural origin. They contain polyvinyl chloride and a minimal amount of softener. The structure of the material is cellular, thanks to which it has good sound insulation. Various textures or patterns are applied to the surface of the panels using printing. On top they are covered with a special antistatic layer, which increases wear resistance and protects against ultraviolet radiation.

On top they can be coated with varnish or a matte-silky coating. You can cover the walls with PVC panels in rooms with direct moisture on their surface, for example, in a bathroom or shower. The material is absolutely waterproof and easy to clean. Sheathing walls with PVC panels is much simpler and lighter than with plasterboard.
