Do-it-yourself children's chair made of foam rubber - selection of material and 2 assembly options

Prices for children's furniture are quite high, but a chair for a baby is not a bed or office chair, where mechanics are present, therefore you can do it yourself at home. I suggest step by step wizard class by self-assembly There are 2 options for such furniture, you just have to choose the model you like.

Kinds

Foam rubber children's furniture is divided into 2 large areas - these are rigid structures, upholstered with foam rubber and frameless chairs.

Upholstered

Upholstered chairs initially have a rigid frame made of wood, thick plywood or chipboard. Next, a layer of furniture foam rubber is glued or stuffed onto this frame, after which the entire structure is sheathed with some kind of furniture fabric.

If the structure is assembled and sheathed correctly, then such furniture will serve for decades. But at the same time, the frame chair turns out to be quite heavy and it is difficult for the baby to move or carry it. Plus, even though soft upholstery, a child can hit himself hard on such a chair while playing.

Frameless

As the name implies, a rigid frame is not provided in these types of chairs; more precisely, the role of the frame is played by furniture foam rubber. In fact, the craftsman only needs to cut out the foam rubber and sew a cover for the structure.

Self-production of soft frameless chair much easier than assembly frame structure. The only skill required to create a frameless foam chair is the ability to cut and sew. If you have the material and a sewing machine, such a chair can be created in 2 - 3 hours.

Option number 1: child seat on a rigid frame

The reduced dimensions of the structure do not at all mean a lightweight assembly scheme. Children's furniture is created according to the same principles as chairs with standard dimensions, and since children are very mobile, the fastening of the knots is carried out with a double margin of safety.

Materials and tools

As already mentioned, a rigid frame for a child seat can be assembled from plywood, chipboard, wood and MDF boards.

  • Plywood is considered the most suitable material for such purposes; it is durable and relatively light. In theory, you can use any plywood, even thin three-layer plywood, for a child seat, but in practice it is better to take a sheet 6-8 mm thick;

For a child seat, it is advisable to use plywood of the “FK” brand, the price for it is reasonable, plus with ecological cleanliness There is complete order there, as for the grade, the chair is completely covered in any case, so plywood of any grade except 4 will do.

  • Chipboard - the only advantage of particle boards is that they are cheap. Chipboard material is heavy, plus under constant mechanical loads it can delaminate over time;
  • Natural wood board is a wonderful, environmentally friendly material. Working with wood is easy and convenient, but the frame of a small chair turns out to be too massive. The recommended thickness of the board is 20 mm, the timber is taken 30x40 mm, no matter how hard you try, the frame comes out voluminous;
  • MDF - fibreboards are equal in weight to chipboard, but they are denser and do not delaminate. The material costs the same as plywood, but plywood has higher strength, so MDF is rarely used for such purposes.

Density of foam rubber for a child seat of great importance does not have, but according to the rules, for highly loaded upholstery it is advisable to take material with a density of 25 kg/m³.

The frame will be assembled using wood screws; you shouldn’t take too long ones, 30-40 mm is enough. The structure is dry, with closed fasteners, so take ordinary steel screws, without anti-corrosion coating.

Tool set:

  • Screwdriver;
  • Wood hacksaw;
  • Furniture stapler;
  • Scissors;
  • Roulette;
  • Pencil.

Description of work

The whole complex of work is divided into 3 stages:

  1. Cutting out parts and assembling the chair frame using self-tapping screws;
  2. Cut the foam rubber and cover the frame with it;
  3. Cutting the furniture fabric and finishing the upholstery of the chair.

Work order

Illustrations Recommendations

Step 1. Sketch.

For a small design, a hand-drawn sketch is enough, the main thing is that you understand how many parts there are in the chair and what size they are.

Step 2. Cut.

The chair was made from scrap materials. The load-bearing sides were made of OSB, the seat was made of chipboard, and the back was made of plywood.

Step 3. Screw the bars.

First, wooden blocks were screwed to the bottom of the seat, at points bordering the sides and back.

Step 4. Screw the sides.

The sides are cut out of OSB and are screwed to the side of the seat. Two self-tapping screws are driven into the end of the chipboard seat, and the other 2 self-tapping screws are driven into the support bars.

Step 5. Assembling the back.

The back consists of 3 plywood sections, they are screwed in the same way as the sides, with 4 screws each.

Step 6. Fix the back.

Small metal ties were used as additional fasteners, which were secured with small self-tapping screws. There were 2 ties for each joint, top and bottom.

For the ties, we took a metal strip with holes; it can be easily cut with metal scissors or pliers. Such tape is sold on the market for reinforcement brickwork and other similar works.

Step 7. Closing the bottom.

It was also decided to close the front part under the seat; for this, a piece of OSB was cut out and screwed on with self-tapping screws.

Step 8. Upholster the seat.

Furniture foam rubber 40 mm thick was used for upholstery. The foam rubber was attached around the perimeter using a furniture stapler.

Step 9. Upholster the verticals.

A single piece of foam rubber was used to upholster the backrest, and individual squares were cut out for the armrests.

  • First, the material is fixed in the area of the seat and the inside of the back;
  • Then the foam rubber with an overlap of 50 - 70 mm from the edge is cut, wrapped and fixed with a stapler.
Step 10. Upholstering the seat.

It was not possible to cover everything entirely, so I had to unscrew the armrests and cover the seat and back separately, and the armrests separately. No complex patterns were made; basically, the material was wrapped and fixed with a stapler.

Step 11. Assembly.

The seat and back were completely covered, so that the frame was not visible anywhere.

The armrests were covered with a soft part and a hard panel inside. Then we screwed the armrest to the chair and wrapped the outer part, securing it with a stapler from below, from the inside. This approach made it possible to hide the screws.

Option number 2: frameless foam chair

If you have difficulty with carpentry work, be it cutting plywood or fixing parts with a screwdriver, then you can try sewing a frameless foam chair with your own hands.

Materials and tools

We have dealt with foam rubber; for homemade furniture, it is advisable to use a material with a density of 25 kg/m³. Solid thick sheets are expensive, so it makes sense to choose a thick foam mat 40 - 50 mm thick.

Foam rubber is a good material, but the furniture will last twice as long if you use polyurethane foam instead of foam rubber. This filler is used in the manufacture of orthopedic mattresses.

Frameless furniture made of foam rubber consists of 3 parts:

  1. A relatively hard foam rubber plate, here, the denser the foam rubber, the better furniture will keep its shape;
  2. Foam rubber is placed in the inner cover, which is equipped with a zipper. Durable, lint-free fabric is used for the inner cover;
  3. To ensure that the furniture lasts as long as possible, an outer cover is also sewn. The configuration, dimensions and patterns of the outer cover are similar to the inner cover, and the material is selected at the request of the owner; the following fabrics are most often used.

Fabric options for outer cover:

  • Jacquard is expensive, but durable and durable material. Most jacquard models have large and bright patterns with a silky sheen;

  • Velor is a fine-haired fabric that is pleasant to the touch. The price of velor is high, plus this fabric is difficult to care for. It is not advisable to use velor specifically for a child seat; you will waste money, and the material will quickly wear out and get dirty;
  • Scotchgard is a modern semi-synthetic analogue of jacquard; it is difficult for a non-specialist to distinguish between these materials, but scotchgard is half the price of jacquard;
  • Chenille is a durable fabric with thick colored thread. Visually, chenille looks rough; some compare it to tarpaulin or burlap, but this is its charm; the large spiral thread gives the canvas a special charm. The price of the material is average, and most importantly, caring for chenille is not difficult;

  • Flock - here we are dealing with a symbiosis of cotton and polyester. The synthetic base is noticeable to the naked eye and can be felt by touch, but the price of flock is affordable, plus the material is durable, elastic and easy to clean.

As for the tools, here you need a tailor's kit:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Needles and threads;
  • Tailor's scissors;
  • Colored chalk for marking patterns;
  • Pins;
  • Tailor's meter or tape measure;
  • Zipper for sewing into the case.

Description of work

  1. First, soft mats are cut out and formed from foam rubber;
  2. Then the mats are sheathed durable fabric- this is the inner case;
  3. The work is completed by making the outer cover.

Work order

Illustrations Recommendations

Step 1. Decide on the details.

The chair consists of 5 elements:

  • Two identical wide seating elements (700x700x150 mm);
  • Two identical small elements for armrests (700x250x150 mm);
  • One back cushion (400x250x150 mm).

    All elements visually resemble rectangular “bricks” of the same thickness, only the dimensions differ.

Step 2. Cut out the foam.

We will make pillows 150 mm thick. As already mentioned, thick foam rubber is valued higher, so we decided to save money, took a sheet 50 mm thick and from it we will form three-layer pillows.

Step 3. Sew the pillows.

Everything is simple here, we take a “gypsy” needle and thread and at several points we sew one foam mat from three elements.

Step 4. Baste the covers.

Now we need to sew rectangular covers for the foam mats.

First, a pattern is made, the top and bottom parts are one canvas, plus 3 side segments.

The primary stitching is done from the inside by hand.

Step 5. First fitting.

Now turn the cover inside out front part and put foam elements in it.

Hand stitching can be easily unraveled and basted again. In this case, we need to make sure that the cover wraps the filler tightly.

Step 6. Sew the cover.

When we are convinced that the cover fits tightly around the foam filling, we need to remove the foam, turn the cover inside out and sew all the seams using a machine.

Step 7. Forming the seat.

Our seat consists of 2 large cushions. The easiest way is to sew them along the edge, but it would be more practical to either connect the elements with buttons or sew in a detachable zipper.

Step 8. Armrests.

Armrests are sewn on both sides in the same way.

Step 9. Back.

The backrest is sewn to the seat and additionally fixed between two armrests.

If even an amateur can sew rectangular covers for foam mats, then creating a throw cover for a chair requires certain skills. I won’t say that it’s too difficult, but you’ll have to tinker with the pattern. IN as a last resort, you can do without a cover, but the chair will wear out faster.

Conclusion

Both instructions above are designed for First level training a master, in other words, to become an amateur. The video in this article breaks down the process clearly. If after studying the material you still have questions, write in the comments, I will try to help.

Frameless furniture is armchairs and sofas, the design of which does not include the presence of solid parts, so it allows you to calmly, comfortably rest and relax.

The bean bag chair is a popular and therefore widely used in great demand upholstered frameless furniture, analogues of which have won many prizes and awards around the world at various exhibitions of the furniture industry.

Frameless furniture can be made with your own hands, for example, as a gift to family, friends or friends. While creating such furniture, you can invent and make various models of frameless chairs yourself. Sellers of frameless furniture inflate the price on the market, which is due to the high competition in the process of selling this type of product. The fight is aimed at those manufacturers who have to think about how to make an ottoman chair cheaper.

The diagram is a pattern for frameless furniture.

Standard frameless chairs have a height of 1 m and a base diameter of 70 cm, so they can be sold at a lower price than chairs large sizes. Having established own production frameless furniture, you can earn big income from this type of business. The scope of use of frameless furniture is very wide, from libraries to cinemas. Sewn furniture can make up an entire furniture set for an adult or a child.

If you don’t want to spend money on a frameless chair offered in a store, then you can make it yourself using patterns of more preferred sizes. Dreaming of purchasing a huge commercial bean bag or frameless sofa at a very low cost makes no sense.

In fact, bean bags of large overall dimensions can allow you to fit into them for the purpose of relaxing in a more comfortable way, which is why bean bags are called beanbags. Bean bags are ideal in children's play and nap areas, being delightful and convenient place for children's entertainment.

When making patterns and sewing chairs, you should not skimp on sizes, since it is impossible to feel the charm and convenience of a frameless chair in any other way. Thanks to their streamlined shapes, ottomans can turn into comfortable zones for people's recreation.
You can create ottomans for different people of any gender, age and status. The main thing is that the chair consists of two covers, that is, an upper and a lower one, which can be removed and put on again after they have been cleaned or washed. Routine care behind frameless ottoman chairs is associated with simplicity and versatility.

The ottoman chair needs a large zipper on the top cover, which will allow it to be removed for cleaning. Polystyrene granules are used as a filler for the lower cover. Since furniture filled with polystyrene shrinks, it will be necessary to additionally stock up on filler, which will need to fill its deficiency.

Choice of material and shape

Fabrics for making the top cover must be selected, focusing on physical characteristics material, including strength, moisture resistance, resistance to pollution, wear. Fabric can sometimes have properties that repel water, so the covering should not prevent any dirt from collecting in the fibers of the fabric.

If the chosen material is not breathable and cannot release air, then having several holes for drainage will be useful. For the production of armchairs, fabrics are used that have different characteristics, that is, color, texture, shades. The fabric used in production must be of high quality. It's guaranteed modern technologies, used for the production of fabric, associated with the production of strong and wear-resistant materials.

When sewing bean bags, you should take into account the season. Best choice for sewing the upper cover protrude natural materials. It can be linen or cotton. When the chair is used in the fall, the tailoring of velvet or corduroy furniture will be impeccable.

In winter, it is best to put fur covers on chairs made of thick fabric for the bottom cover with filling. This way you can change the upper covers on the chair every season, which will allow you to make more comfortable interior. For the production of frameless furniture, you can use genuine leather or leatherette; denim fabric is also suitable.

If desired, the selected fabrics can be combined with each other in color and texture, and the chosen design of the ottoman chair should be combined with the interior style of the room. When making a frameless chair for the first time, you can use the pattern used in most cases, since it is universal. This will allow you to get comfortable model chairs with a lower and upper cover that has a handle for carrying the chair.

At the same time, different models of chairs differ in the size of the backrest and seat. If the chair does not have a backrest, then there will be no need to turn it specifically to the side where you need to sit. Following all the curves of the body of a person resting on a chair, it forms a headrest with armrests that allow you to sit comfortably in such furniture, which provides a relaxing effect.

A frameless chair can be shaped like a pear or a ball; its shape is sometimes cubic or round. If you try, you can actually make a sofa-ottoman for a living room where several guests will relax. Frameless furniture is light and ergonomic, and its weight does not exceed 3 kg. It is comfortable to carry for both adults and children. The weight of frameless furniture will depend not only on the dimensions, but also on the fabric used for the covers. For example, water-repellent fabric or heavy furniture will increase the weight of furniture up to 7 kg.

Preparing the pattern

To sew an ottoman, a strong fabric measuring 3.5 x 1.5 m is suitable. In order to be able to release air from the cover, a very strong material with a blown air texture, which will make the ottoman softer. Sewing technology is associated with convenience and can allow you to do it yourself without any problems. You need to have on hand:

  • textile;
  • scissors;
  • threads;
  • ruler;
  • pattern;
  • needles;
  • chalk or pencil;
  • polystyrene filler;
  • compass;
  • sewing machine;
  • lightning

The filler is sold by suppliers of thermal insulation materials to the construction industry market. The polystyrene filler is white, and furniture made from it is environmentally friendly and harmless to human health. When buying polystyrene foam in granules, you must keep in mind that small granules will make the bag heavier, and large ones cannot be evenly distributed inside the lower cover. Required quantity required filler polystyrene is taken into account depending on the size of the cover. The manufacturing of a bean bag chair is based on the principle of sewing a pillowcase that is put on a pillow.

It is best to fill the bags with polystyrene granules, which should be handled with extreme care, since they are light and can fly around when filled with the lower covers under the chairs. This material is water-repellent. It is better to take balls of not very large and not very small sizes, be sure to be interested in certificates of compliance of the material with the required level of quality.

During the manufacturing process, you will need not only fabric, but also special reinforced threads that have high reliability and strength. One of the best options- this is to choose a rubberized material that is most suitable for the cover that is put on top. This material will not allow water to penetrate into the cover of the chair being cleaned. This type of fabric should be wiped with a damp cloth from time to time.

Patterns for chairs usually contain a standard set of elements consisting of:

  • sidewalls - 4 pcs;
  • round parts - 2 pcs;
  • rectangular pieces for the handle.

To make and sew a handle to the bag, you will need to cut a piece from the prepared material rectangular shape 2-3 cm longer than the length of the diameter, the size of the circumference of the pattern. To make a special template, use thick paper. Two sets of identical patterns are made on two types of material, selected for the lower cover and the upper one. It is imperative to take into account the allowances left for the seams, marking them with a pencil or chalk.

Having appeared more than forty years ago, frameless furniture continues to be a trend in the modern furniture industry, finding more and more new areas of application. And the inventors of this type of furniture were three young Italian designers who proposed a revolutionary change in the appearance of furniture that is familiar to us. Frameless furniture, or Sacco in Italian, is a container filled with small balls of polystyrene foam. At first, it was a simple bag, but over time the shapes of the Sacco changed so much that at first glance you couldn’t tell that it was a Sacco.

Frameless furniture has found a wide range of uses - in houses and apartments, in country houses and in country houses, in entertainment venues, in medical institutions, but you won’t find her anywhere. And it’s in place everywhere.

What is so attractive about frameless furniture?

Firstly, this is, of course, originality. After the stumps and stones on which our not very civilized ancestors sat, after the chairs, tables, armchairs, beds of the civilized world, made of wood, metal or plastic, something radically different from both appeared.
Secondly, convenience and comfort. This type of furniture takes all the curves of your body, and all your muscles relax. Great way relaxation.
Thirdly, safety. You cannot bump into frameless furniture and get injured. This is especially true when used in children's rooms.
Fourthly, environmental friendliness. The filler is a hypoallergenic substance and does not emit harmful substances. Other materials used are also hypoallergenic.
Fifthly, creativity. The flight of imagination when creating frameless furniture is limitless. Can be used various materials or combinations thereof, create a variety of shapes that are problematic to create when using traditional materials, you can use filler balls different sizes, etc. and so on.
Sixth, mobility. Frameless furniture is light - 5-6 kg, so it is not difficult to move it from place to place. When transporting, it takes up minimal space.
And this is just a small part of the advantages of frameless furniture. Anyone can find many more advantages.
And one more advantage of frameless furniture. Any housewife can make it. Now we will demonstrate this to you.

DIY frameless furniture

Let's make a frameless sofa like this.

As a rule, frameless furniture is made of two covers. One contains a filler, the second is external, performing a decorative function. In addition, it can be easily removed and washed if it gets dirty.
The inner cover is made of durable mixed fabric or polyester fabric, such as Oxford. The outer cover is made of dense non-stretch fabric. It is better not to use lint fabrics; dust and pet hair accumulate on them.
Necessary materials for frameless furniture:
- Oxford 600 fabric 2.5 m
- reinforced threads No. 70ll
- zipper No. 5 30 cm
- sewing machine and needles No. 100
- scissors
- chalk
- expanded polystyrene granules 3 kg
- tape and a plastic bottle.

We cut the fabric according to the drawing with tolerances of 1.5 cm.

Chop off the back and bottom front side inside and stitch to the place where you decide to install the zipper. Then we sew them together with a hand seam, straighten the seam allowances and sew on the zipper.

We rip out the temporary seams.

The front part and the back are cleaved with the front side inward and ground down. Then they are cleaved and overcast with details of the bottom and back.

The seams are processed with an overlocker or the seam allowance is folded in half and stitched.

Grind the front part. Then the cover is turned inside out and a stitch is laid around the perimeter of the front part, securing a 0.7 cm fold with it. This edging will strengthen the seam and give visual rigidity to the cover.

Then the case is filled with foam.

Pay attention to the filler for frameless furniture. The foam balls must be separate, correct form, clean and dry. It is advisable that the granules be the same size and not very small, then the sofa will turn out to be heavy. Best size granules - 4-5 mm.
The filler is poured into frameless furniture using a simple homemade device- funnels. A 1.5 liter plastic bottle (preferably with a “waist”) is used to make a neck through which the filler will be poured. We secure the neck of the case and the bag with filling with tape.

The cover is filled 2/3 with polystyrene foam granules. This optimal quantity. It is better to buy granules with a reserve, since they will shrink during use.
The outer cover is made in the same way, but it is necessary to provide a zipper of the required length so that the inner cover can be pulled out. And attach a couple of eyelets to it for quick air release when sitting on the sofa.
That's all. Use and enjoy homemade frameless furniture.
