Description of the Viking cultivator

Viking cultivators are equipped with powerful, but at the same time compact, four-stroke gasoline engines with overhead valves. The engine is located low on the frame, which ensures excellent balancing of the unit. For ease of transportation, motor cultivators are equipped with auxiliary wheels. The grip width is adjustable - the maximum for younger models is 45 cm, for older models 85 cm.

The control handles are connected to the unit through a vibration-absorbing system, which ensures comfort even during long-term operation. They are also height adjustable and fold into a transport position for easier transportation. For safety, all rotating components are guarded. The Viking cultivator also has a attachment for additional equipment (hiller, plow, etc.).

To work on hard soils, it is possible to attach additional loads.

A special feature of the Viking motor-cultivator is its easy disassembly and adjustment without the use of special tools.

Principle of operation

To drive the unit, as mentioned above, a four-stroke gasoline engine with electronic ignition is used. The motor air intake system includes dust filters that reliably protect it even when processing hard, dry soil. The torque from it is transmitted through a belt drive, which also partially reduces the rotation speed, to the worm gearbox.

In older models, it is reversible and allows you to change the direction of movement of the working parts and, consequently, the movement of the cultivator. The gearbox reduces the speed and increases the torque to the required value, then transmits the movement to the shaft on which the knives that cultivate the soil are mounted.

Advantages and disadvantages in comparison with domestic manufacturers

When comparing the Viking motor-cultivator with domestic units, only the advantages can be noted (maybe with the exception of the price, but more on that below), we will list them.

Viking walk-behind tractors and cultivators- This is Viking’s own development, capable of satisfying the most demanding demands. Thus, the manufacturer garden equipment from Tyrol offers discerning amateur gardeners innovative and technically advanced Viking walk-behind tractors. Powerful engine, attractive design, numerous ergonomic advantages to make work easier.

Loose soil after processing Viking walk-behind tractors without large lumps will please any gardener. Viking walk-behind tractors actively contribute to this, relieving you of heavy, monotonous manual labor with a shovel or hoe. The special geometry of the knives allows you to process even extremely hard and dense soils. Where the Viking HB motor cultivator has passed, the soil becomes loose and permeable to water and air. When creating new beds, the motor cultivator performs the most important preparatory work. At the same time, it easily deals with weeds: by crushing organic material, which is then released into the soil to rot. With Viking walk-behind tractors, you can cultivate large areas and use a walk-behind cultivator, for example, in tree nurseries, viticulture and gardening.

Ergonomic advantages of Viking motor cultivators: benefit for the user. From the very beginning, Viking engineers had a goal: for all its exceptional power and durability, the walk-behind tractor should be as user-friendly as possible. Ergonomics starts with the drive handle. It can be installed in three different height positions in one step. You can just as easily perform its lateral rearrangement to the right or left. The last function will be useful to those gardeners who do not want to follow the cultivator through freshly plowed soil. With the drive handle in a fixed lateral position, the unit nevertheless moves clearly along the desired furrow. Braking occurs via a 3-position brake, which is easily accessible in the control area. Viking specialists have made special efforts to reduce vibration. Special knives They cut rather than plow the soil. Thanks to their smooth movements, Viking tillers move more smoothly and vibrate less. The damping elements between the drive handle and the gear housing greatly facilitate the work. They effectively dampen vibrations. For the user, this means longer work hours without fatigue. A good feeling of traction and stress-free maneuvering are the result of a carefully balanced weight distribution. This is also facilitated by the low center of gravity. Comfort is increased by an additional reverse gear.

Uncompromising quality of Viking walk-behind tractor materials, reliability and ease of maintenance. Due to harsh operating conditions, Viking relies on very durable components. These include, for example, a forged crankshaft and a steel cylinder liner. They also have a long service life and are durable aluminium case gearbox, hardened steel worm shaft and bronze alloy worm wheel. Assemblies subject to heavy loads, for example those connecting the limiter, the chassis and the gear housing equipment, are particularly robust.

The safety of Viking motor cultivators is confirmed by the GS mark. It confirms that the tiller complies with the requirements of the Equipment and Product Safety Act. To protect the user from foreign objects, there is, for example, a rigid housing with a durable casing and double-walled polymer protective pads. To eliminate operating errors, Viking has equipped the forward and reverse gear control levers with an automatic safety lock. When the user engages forward gear, reverse gear is blocked and vice versa. The handles of the drive handle, covered with special rubber, allow the user to confidently control the unit. Thus, all these factors ensure safe operation. To make transporting the cultivator easier, Viking specialists installed two wheels at the rear of the cultivator. The user only needs to tilt the unit back by the drive handle so that the knives do not touch the ground. The design of the wheels is also well suited for bringing the Viking motor cultivator to the cleaning position. To do this, it should be completely tilted back and brought into vertical position. The protrusion on the body makes this operation easier. Now the motor cultivator is in a stable position, and the tilling kit is at a height convenient for cleaning. Soil and plant debris can be removed quickly and easily. Practical: With the drive handle folded, the cultivator takes up little space.

Viking motor cultivators awarded the “Good Design Award”, recognized throughout the world. For the Viking HB 585 cultivator, which successfully debuted on the market in autumn 2010, the Langkampfen-based garden equipment manufacturer Viking received the world-famous Good Design Award. Service

Before the first start or after a long period of inactivity, a break-in must be carried out, which extends the life of the engine and allows all parts to get used to each other. The break-in procedure takes little time and does not require significant effort.

Certain steps must be taken:

  • Check the presence of engine oil.
  • Start the engine and leave it running at low speed for 30 minutes, periodically shifting gears.
  • For the next 8 hours, you can use the cultivator at half power.
  • After finishing the break-in, drain everything engine oil and replace with new ones.

Below is a video review where you can clearly see how easy and simple it is to work on the Viking HB 585 walk-behind tractor

Since all models are equipped with 4-stroke engines, the appropriate oil should be filled. Much also depends on the seasonality of work. Most oils have a viscous structure, so using semi-synthetic oils in cold weather will not be effective.

Since the cooling system on Viking walk-behind tractors is air-based, you should ensure its cleanliness. Working on dry soil is especially dangerous, as dust penetrates inside the casing and settles on the components and elements of the cultivator.

Main malfunctions and ways to prevent them

As numerous owners of Viking walk-behind tractors have noticed, the weakest point of the device is the gearbox. Even though it is well protected metal body, after wet processing or washing, moisture remains in the form of condensation, which has a detrimental effect on the parts.

The following video provides an overview of the Viking HB 560 walk-behind tractor:

Do not get upset prematurely, since manufacturers have provided this option and supply the gearbox with high-quality lubricant, the amount of which is designed for a long operating period. But over time, the lubricant wears off, careless handling also makes its own adjustments, so the gearbox becomes unusable. Unfortunately, this part of the mechanism cannot be repaired and will have to be completely replaced.

Important! Do not leave fuel in the tank after completing all work on the walk-behind tractor, as after a few days condensation may form in it, which will render the entire fuel system unusable.

If the engine does not start, it is necessary to: check the presence of fuel and sparks in the spark plug, clean the air filter and fuel tank.

If the engine gets very hot, the reason for this may be a lack of oil, clogging of the ventilation, engine or muffler. In this case, it is necessary to clean the parts and refill with oil.

Owners taking care of their equipment will prevent premature breakdowns.

Adhering to the following rules will increase the service life of the walk-behind tractor:

  • When buying a walk-behind tractor, ask the seller to check the operation of the gearbox and make sure there is no moisture in it.
  • Protect valves.
  • It is advisable to store the walk-behind tractor in a dry, warm place at times when it is not intended to long-term use technology.
  • Check regularly air filters which must be clean.
