Chandeliers with branches for the hall. A chandelier for the living room is the central element of lighting. Chandeliers for the hall

Lighting plays a key role in shaping the image of any room. Depending on size, purpose and set functional zones space, it may have different sources of artificial light. But in almost all cases, ceiling lights - chandeliers - are used. Long gone are the days when a chandelier performed exclusively the functions of a lighting fixture. In a modern interior ceiling lamp can act as the main decorative element, be a color accent of the design, serve to link the central objects of the room or reflect the concept of any stylistic direction. In a word, the choice of a chandelier, no matter what room you are decorating, must be taken responsibly, because you will need to solve many dilemmas - the size and shape of the lamp, the color scheme, the power of the device and even the color and intensity of the light fluxes. Well, the fashionable design of pendant lamps for rooms for various purposes You can look at our large selection of photos of design projects collected around the world.

Criteria for choosing a modern chandelier

In addition to its main functional component - lighting a space, a chandelier can perform other options - zoning a room, visually making it more spacious and voluminous due to correctly selected lighting intensity and distribution of light fluxes, it can create the necessary accent, become a central element of the interior, and distract attention from unsuccessful objects or entire areas.

So, the choice of chandelier is influenced by the following criteria:

  • purpose of the room - it is obvious that a chandelier for a bathroom and a living room, for example, must be chosen differently;
  • the size of the room and the number of functional zones, the presence of other lighting fixtures - even in small rooms, the lighting system rarely consists of one pendant lamp, given the multifunctionality of the premises, each segment requires its own source of artificial light;
  • the color palette of the interior influences the choice of chandelier design, its power and lighting color (warm or cold flow);
  • the stylistic direction in interior design directly influences the choice of chandelier model;
  • the financial capabilities of the owners of the room for which the lamp is being selected and their idea of the beauty and practicality of lighting fixtures - the range in cost of modern chandeliers is incredibly wide.

Types of modern chandeliers by design and style

In terms of design features, the most popular type of chandeliers today are pendant lamps. The name speaks for itself - such a chandelier must have a string, cord or chain on which the main elements of the lamp are attached - a lampshade (one or more) and its supporting structure. The length of the pendant lamp can be adjusted depending on the size of the room (mainly the height of the ceiling) and the atmosphere that needs to be created in the room with its help - a solemn one, brightly illuminating the entire space, or an intimate one, scattering the lighting and dimming it.

The second most popular type of chandeliers is ceiling lights. Such lighting They do not have a suspension and are attached directly to the ceiling. The design may consist of one large lampshade adjacent to the ceiling surface or several lampshades supported unified system. Ceiling chandeliers are an ideal option for rooms with low ceilings. These lamps are easy to care for. But to replace a light bulb in a chandelier consisting of one large shade, you will have to unscrew the entire structure from the ceiling.

There are also chandeliers that are difficult to identify as one of the two types of lamps from a design point of view. Most often, these are designer models with an elaborate shape; they can be partially fixed to the ceiling, partially located on pendants, or represent a structure that is externally difficult to identify with one or another type of lamp.

Classic chandeliers and their variations

One of the most popular types of chandeliers in terms of stylistic design is the classic model. Most of us associate the very concept of a chandelier with this type of lamp - smooth lines of a suspended structure with several shades, most often containing decorative elements. But the name “classical” chandelier should not confuse you - this type of lamp is relevant for almost any style of interior design - from neo-classical to avant-garde. Traditional chandeliers with a modern design can be presented in a wide variety of variations.

Initially, the classic chandelier was the personification of the wealth and taste of the owners (in fact, only wealthy homeowners could afford chandeliers). They were carried out from natural materials– metal, glass, crystal, lampshades could be made of fabric. For many of our compatriots, a crystal chandelier is still a symbol of luxury, elegance and prosperity.

The first chandeliers were essentially hanging candlesticks. Candles were inserted into special metal frames. Memory of roots classic chandeliers found its embodiment in modern models. Pendant lamps with imitation of burning candles are incredibly popular and look great in rooms of any purpose, made in the neo-classical style, various modifications of the classical style, contemporary and shabby chic.

Modern chandeliers in traditional style can be made entirely of plastic, decorated with decorative elements (such as Swarovski crystals) and at the same time look luxurious, respectable and even pretentious. But the modern style of decorating living spaces still inclines us to purchase chandeliers of laconic design, with minimum set decor.

If you add a lot of decorative elements to a classic chandelier of bright colors, then it easily becomes not only an interior decoration, but its main color accent, the center of attraction of all eyes.

The most popular are chandeliers of the traditional model with a metal, lightweight frame and several shades, most often made of fabric. Such pendant lamps are quite versatile; they fit harmoniously into modern interior premises of any type. Such a chandelier would be appropriate in a living room, bedroom, even a children's room or a spacious hallway. In addition, this model does not require very high ceilings in the room.

Art Nouveau pendant lamps

Art Nouveau style appeared as a counterbalance to all classical motifs in the field of interior design. Everything new and ultra-modern, going against traditional forms, was usually called modern. In fact, at present, any chandelier that differs in type from the classical one can be called a lamp in the Art Nouveau style. These include ultra-modern chandeliers with an avant-garde design that bring creativity to the design of space and minimalist lamps that can be used in the interior of any room.

There are countless options for designing a chandelier in the Art Nouveau style. These can be laconic designs with several light bulbs without shades or elaborate lamps with many decorative elements, behind which it is difficult to see the light sources themselves.

Eco-style chandeliers

The desire to use everything natural in a modern style could not ignore such an area of interior design as the production of lighting fixtures. At the same time, chandeliers created using natural materials, can organically fit not only into eco-style or country. They perfectly complement almost all varieties. modern style, look harmonious in rooms decorated in the style of shabby chic, Provence, eclecticism, Scandinavian and even avant-garde.

When making eco-style chandeliers, natural materials are used - metal, wood, glass, crystal, fabric, paper (most often rice), shells, pebbles, twigs, straw, bamboo can be used as decorative elements.

Chandelier for zoning a modern room

Traditionally, a chandelier is hung in the center of the room. But in Lately Multifunctional interiors have become increasingly widespread - spaces consisting of several segments require a more comprehensive lighting system. Often central chandelier complemented by built-in lighting - this may be like LED Strip Light, located along the perimeter of the ceiling, and lamps placed locally depending on the location of the functional areas.

The chandelier can be located not only in the center of the room. For example, it can become an element of zoning for a particular functional segment. In the living room, which combines the functions of a dining room, the chandelier can be placed above dining table. In a common room with a fireplace, the chandelier can be “moved” towards the soft zone, especially if, in addition to the pendant lamp, there are other light sources - a floor lamp or wall sconces.

In the bedroom, the chandelier can be hung not in the center of the room, but at the foot of the bed (if you want to use a fairly long structure, but the height of the ceiling does not allow it) or you can equip the bedside tables on either side of the bed with a pair of pendant lamps.

For a spacious room, a pair of identical chandeliers is quite often used. design technique for foreign projects. But even in our country, many homeowners were able to appreciate the benefits of such an arrangement of lighting fixtures. On the one hand, you can illuminate a considerable area of the room while maintaining a symmetrical setting, on the other hand, you can create an original tandem that can become the highlight of the interior.

What if there are not two chandeliers, but three? Of course, for such lighting and decoration, a considerable area of the room is required and its height is sufficient. A trio of identical pendant lamps looks especially impressive when placed strictly in a row.

It is logical that a chandelier, if it is not the only lighting fixture in the room, should match the style of other lamps. At the same time, experts argue that there is no need to select devices from one collection; it is enough to opt for models of the same stylistic affiliation, made of the same materials, albeit in different colors, decorated with different decor.

On the other hand, chandeliers that are excellent in the way they are executed and decorated, illuminating one room, are an interesting and bold design move. If you feel brave enough for such interior design, it will become distinctive feature not only this room, but the entire home.

Modern chandeliers: photos of 2018 models

Hello! My hands have reached a serious and large topic, I don’t know if it will even fit into one article. So, today we will talk about chandeliers. There is an opinion that chandeliers are last century and now is the time for built-in ceiling lights. Of course this is all complete nonsense. Chandeliers are always relevant, they are timeless. Built-in light will solve the problem uniform lighting and that is all. A good chandelier puts the finishing touches on the decor of the room.

In terms of its role in the interior, I compare a chandelier to jewelry in clothing. You can do without them, but the image will be boring and unfinished. Ridiculous decorations will indicate a lack of taste on the part of the hostess. Outdated because she has no idea what fashion is. Awkward ones can highlight figure flaws. It's exactly the same with light. All lighting elements (including sconces, desk lamp, floor lamps) are Jewelry and jewelry for your home. And their choice must be approached very carefully so as not to spoil the entire impression. They don't have to be expensive. Price is not the main thing. But they should decorate, and not nullify all efforts to bring beauty.

At the same time, the decorative role of lighting is still not the main one. After all, light is primarily a function. Therefore, I will call the most important and first selection criterion the sufficient lighting area that the chandelier covers. And we’ll definitely talk about beauty, but a little later.

Mistake #1: small chandelier lighting area

Firstly, we need to at least approximately calculate the area of the room that we need to illuminate. And based on this figure, guide your choice.

An ordinary small ceiling chandelier with 3 arms with 40-60 watt lamps is designed for 6-9 square meters.

Why is it important? Because there is nothing more valuable and important than health. Constantly being in a room with insufficient lighting is simply harmful. Okay, the bedroom, but such chandeliers are also chosen for the nursery.

There are special standards that you should follow. You can find out more about them by following the links Code of Rules “Natural and Artificial Lighting” and SanPiN 2.2.1/2.1.1.1278-03. Don’t be alarmed by such huge amounts of information (for example, we just need to choose a chandelier for the bedroom), just keep in mind that the average standard for residential premises is 100-150 lux.

Always carefully study the technical characteristics of the chandelier; the recommended lighting area is usually indicated there. At least in most online stores this information is indicated. And if the technical part scares you, then just ask managers about it, that’s their job.

And you should always keep in mind that:

  1. Dark walls or ceilings will reflect light worse, which means that with the same chandelier in such a room it will be darker than with white ceilings and walls.
  2. High ceilings “eat up” the light.
  3. Rough surfaces do not reflect light well and give micro-shadows - therefore, wooden houses it often works out dim lighting. I wrote about this in an article about.

Well, if you want to approach the issue even more seriously, then use the DIALux program.

This error almost always goes along with the next one.

Mistake #2: small chandelier size

Often found when decorating houses and cottages, rooms where there is second light and in general high ceilings(above 3 meters). If the room is more than 16-20 square meters (the average size of a typical living room with ceilings of 2.5 meters), then a chandelier of normal sizes (what you were used to while living in an apartment) will most likely be small. What is suitable for an ordinary room, in country house, most likely, will be insufficient.

In general, scale and proportions are very important. There is even a formula by which it is recommended to calculate the size of a chandelier:

Diameter (cm) = Room length (m) + Room width (m) * 10 (cm)

For example, for a room measuring 3.8 m by 5.6 m (an ordinary small living room in panel house) the recommended diameter of the chandelier is as follows: (3.8 m+5.6 m) * 10 cm = 94 cm.

In theory, everything is just great. But in practice, chandeliers of such diameters will not cost a budget, to put it mildly. Plus, the length of the suspension will be such that in your typical apartment you will touch it with your head. And among the ceiling ones with such a diameter you simply won’t find anything. I’m not kidding, right now I’m opening the website of one of the largest online stores with light, setting a filter for ceiling chandeliers with a diameter of 90 cm, and voila, only 13 options, prices from 38 to 549 thousand rubles. You probably won't like it. Therefore, formulas are all very good, but often they are simply not applicable in life. For a standard room of 20-25 square meters, a chandelier with a diameter of 65-70 cm is suitable. If 40-50, then it’s a little too small, here you already need to look at the design, it happens that it’s good if the ceiling height is 2.7 and higher and the chandelier is vertically elongated shape. This is just the next common mistake - the height of the chandelier.

Mistake #3: Wrong chandelier height

There seems to be nothing complicated here. Low ceilings - a flat chandelier, high ceilings - a more voluminous one. The correct size will help adjust the height of the room, and an unsuccessful one will visually lower the ceilings even lower. This is generally a problem; the proportions of the room immediately collapse. Judge for yourself.

The chandelier hangs too low. Probably there is a standard 2.5 m in height, but it looks like 2.2-2.3 m. How to walk without hitting your head?

Laughter is laughter, but the head is actually an important reference point. Let's look at doorways, their height is 2 meters. This is the bare minimum required for free movement. This means the height of your chandelier should be such that there is even more from floor to ceiling, not 2, but at least 2.2, and preferably 2.3 meters. Therefore, we adequately assess the height of our room and choose either ceiling or pendant light. For suspended ones, we also additionally look at whether the height is adjustable, what is the length of the chain, whether something can be removed or unscrewed to adjust it to the desired position. Don’t be shy about asking the manager to measure the height in the store with a ruler; it’s better to measure and study it 100 times than to later make sure that the pendants rest on the top of your head and have to give it up.

But the lamp (chandelier) above the dining table is a slightly different story. This is local lighting, not general. Its role is to illuminate the table and what is on the table, and not the tops of those sitting, so it is located a little lower. But at the same time it should not interfere with communication, block the view or blind the eyes. Optimal height chandeliers above the table around 90 cm. It can be a little higher, it can be 10-15 cm lower.

Mistake #4: outdated, ridiculous, unfashionable chandelier model

So I’ve come to the most common and most interesting, but most difficult to explain from a decorator’s point of view, mistake. Someone might argue that appearance is of secondary importance, because I myself said that the main thing in lighting is function. But if you neglect it, then all your efforts to make your home beautiful will come to naught.

I noticed that light is the jewelry of the house. And it has its own fashion, which often has nothing in common with what is sold in most electrical goods stores. Everything here is the same as with furniture or clothes. There are also ugly chandeliers.

What chandeliers are in fashion now?

First, the terrible stuff. But before that, I’ll explain that for me this is the most the hard part articles, because I really have no idea how to explain what is beautiful and what is not in words. Even if you show it, you still need to somehow explain why one is beautiful and the other is scary. Let's say this is obvious to me, I just go by my taste. If I like it, it’s beautiful; no, it’s ugly. Whatever one may say, it’s the same by and large there is no taste and there cannot be any truth in this matter by definition. But personally, when evaluating something, I look at the shapes, proportions, whether something generally catches the eye or not, whether it holds attention. I will try to highlight the main points that are worth paying attention to.

Now main trend chandeliers are made of metal. There are other themes - plastic, glass, rattan, fabric, but metal was the main material and remains so. Brass and copper fittings are especially popular. This is the most fashionable squeak 🙂 But they are in the budget segment, as usual, during the day. The choice is very limited. A couple of years ago, the world's top designers with their own lighting lines, such as Kelly Westler and Jonathan Adler, brought chrome and nickel back into the mix. I even remember a slogan like: silver is coming back!!! But with it everything is a little more complicated, in the matte version almost everything is definitely yes (if you’ve already bothered with the texture, then the design is usually good), and polished nickel and chrome plating are very careful. Now I will explain why.

If a chandelier is made of yellow and red metal (both matte and polished), due to its color it almost immediately becomes fashionable. But when it comes to silver metal, this is not enough. Here the form comes into play. Because all trash and consumer goods are 90% chrome plated. I'll show you a few examples now.

The most terrible chandeliers:

  • Polished chrome and curlicue flowers and curlicues in general, waves in the style of plasterboard arches and other squiggles on the ceiling. It’s kind of modern, but collective farm modern (the chandelier designer may not agree with me).

  • Polished chrome and halogen bulbs. Personally it reminds me of ashtrays.

I actually can’t even remember the chandelier with good design and halogen bulbs. Even expensive ones. It doesn't depend on the price. If you look you can find something, but most inexpensive (and often expensive) ones are brilliant trash. I really can’t find the words or arguments why this is ugly, but it is ugly.

  • Polished chrome and LED lights.

  • polished chrome (and polished gold metal) in combination with colored glass, flowers + halogen.

In general, these models, by the way, are quite popular in great demand. They seem to still be on the control panel. I don’t know, I don’t know... maybe the managers themselves post rave reviews. In general, all this is the most ordinary cheap/collective farm, if you like (even if the chandelier itself is expensive) pseudo-glamour. Never, never, ever hang something like this in your living room.

Better pay attention to completely different models. The most current form now is futuristic and the trend towards minimalism continues. These are all kinds of sticks, tubes, balls, hedgehogs, lines, cylinders, plates - any simple geometric shapes. This applies to chandeliers made of any material: incl. made of polished and painted metal, plastic, glass, fabric. And a fashionable chandelier may not have shades at all (but this is not an indispensable condition).

Once again I will repeat the signs of modern, trendy fashion chandeliers, it is not at all necessary that they all be present at the same time:

  • futuristic shape;
  • geometric elements;
  • matte yellow, red metal (copper, brass and alloys);
  • There may be no lampshades (a tribute to the minimalism that has been trending in the last few years).

They look like this:

And one last important question. Should a chandelier strictly match the style of the room? If you go this route, you can't go wrong. It will be almost impossible to miss. But in general this is not at all necessary. Designer chandeliers 70s, industrial, fit well into classic interiors, it turns out such a modernized classic, and classic ones, on the contrary, look great in modern ones.

Which chandelier should you choose? 4 common mistakes: 93 comments

  1. Valeria

    Well...it's incredibly difficult to choose a chandelier....
    The choice is huge, there’s just so much…. and I don’t like anything...

    1. Post author

      If the budget is low, then it’s really difficult to choose, but you have to look, an ugly chandelier will be like a thorn, you can send a photo by email for advice.

      1. Inna

        Hello. Tell me, in your opinion, what kind of sconce can match such a chandelier SL483.502.03 Ceiling chandelier ST-Luce Chrome/White E27 3*60W. I liked the ST Luce SL849.101.01 Edificio sconce and the ST Luce SL591.501.01 wall lamp. I still can't choose. Maybe you can recommend something?

      2. Vladimir

        Good afternoon Advice on choosing a chandelier! Room 18m2, ceiling 2.5, modern style. I liked the Chandelier 250*750 for 20 lamps, wouldn’t it be too big, the width of the room is only 3.10. There is one for 12 lamps 175*600, what do you recommend? The color settled on chrome, the balls are grey, are there matte gold balls that look like transparent gold? I can send a photo by email if you write

  2. Galina

    Can such chandeliers be considered relevant? On the one hand, this is not halogen trash, but on the other hand, it’s hard to call it fashionable...

  3. Alexander

    Good material, informative

  4. Alyona

    I really liked the selection of trendy chandeliers) It’s a truly difficult choice - to choose a chandelier so that it doesn’t stand out in the room, but rather highlights the room) Thanks for the article))

  5. ea1

    Interesting article, but I think chandeliers are a thing of the past. This beautiful element design, but there is no light from it, plus a chandelier, even the most modern one, illuminates the center of the room, which is absolutely unacceptable in a room of more than 15 square meters. The most sensible option is LED panels with zone connection for 4-5 rocker switch allowing you to create an atmosphere and comfort. And the figure of 150-200 lumens is clearly underestimated, this is the equivalent of a 130 W incandescent lamp, in a word, darkness. I have about 1400 lumens in my room, and this is excellent, although this is a matter of taste.

  6. Anton

    good article, I will definitely use the advice.

  7. Nikitos

    I always thought that a chandelier had no special significance for the interior of a room, until I started doing renovations myself. There was a problem with the fact that the chandelier seemed “not harmoniously larger” in relation to the size of the room, it looked somehow poor :(. As a result, I had to buy another one, slightly smaller in size.

  8. Asya

    Hello, thanks for the article, I’m also looking for two chandeliers - for the kitchen and for the living room. I would like to send you the models that I have my eye on... It’s very difficult to choose

  9. Vladimir

    Yes, thanks for the informative and detailed material, I was not too lazy to read to the end (although there may be a continuation - we are waiting, sir. Chandeliers, perhaps, reflect the character and taste of the owners of the apartment best of all. And, probably, it is difficult to unambiguously evaluate and understand what will look ideal in my interior. But I don’t agree with such a concept as a fashionable chandelier. After all, this is not a piece of clothing that has been worn and changed without problems, if you buy a chandelier, it will last for many years (up to next repair least). But fashion or a trend has the ability to change, and if futuristic minimalism is in fashion today, it’s not a fact that in five years it will look just as cool. And the classics are classics in Africa too.

  10. Vadim

    I read your entire article and found what I needed in only one sentence and without specifics. Can you explain a little in the comments, maybe insert a couple of photos about the second light? The question of choosing a lighting source is already before us in a country house - we are finishing the finishing. A wooden house made of profiled timber, a living room with a second light and what chandelier to choose we simply don’t understand yet, even approximately...

  11. Tatiana

    Nelly, good afternoon! I enjoy reading your blog, it is written very concisely and there are many examples. Tell me what kind of chandelier to hang on the attic floor? The bevel runs along the length of the entire room, the minimum height at the window is 2.2 m, the maximum on the opposite side is 3.5 m. The area of the room is 30 sq. m. Thank you.

  12. Larisa

    Dear Nelly, good afternoon!

    Let me consult you on this issue. We have a two-room large apartment. two children. the eldest, 12 years old, is in a separate room. And the three of us are in the living room - the little one is 1.5 years old. The living room is 22 sq.m. with two windows (Not at the end!). The entrance to the living room is in the form of an arch from the corridor opposite the wall with two windows. And the room is clearly visible from the corridor. I really want to have a private area so that I can at least put a 1.5 bed. It seems clear how to do this, divide the room in half and that’s it!!! But I’m afraid, what will it be like later, will we be able to in the small living room, will it be comfortable. Please advise. The room is 4*6, where 6 m is its length and there are 2 windows on this wall. Or just install a partition in the form of a rack? Thank you for your informative, and most importantly visual materials!!! Sincerely, Larisa Ulan-Ude

  13. Oksana

    Nellie, good night! Your article was interesting, but it still gave me conflicting feelings. Firstly, what you are positioning now as the “squeak” of fashion will not suit everyone, and secondly, you won’t actually find it everywhere, which means it won’t be cheap or even average. Thirdly, it seemed to me that you are more in favor of minimalism, but what about the good old classics? Can all classic chandeliers really be thrown into the trash?)) In addition, I agree with the comment above that classics will never go out of fashion. But minimalism is unknown how long it will last, especially futurism. The closest thing to me is a mixture of styles. But such decisions need to be thought through very carefully so that it doesn’t turn out to be a vinaigrette)). The topic of design is also close to me because I am finishing a long-term renovation and have just settled on such interior items as chandeliers, curtains, and some of the furniture still needs to be sorted out. Tell me, is it possible to send you a photo and consult with you?

  14. Natalia Mikhailova

    Nelly, good afternoon. I accidentally came across your notes. You write well, it’s “delicious”. I would be happy to consult. Although my daughter-in-law is an amateur designer (with a construction education) who realizes her talents remarkably well. But her approach, her proposals for my apartment are to completely destroy the existing interior and create a new one, regardless of material possibilities. This doesn't suit me.
    And the question is: how do you consider interiors with the possibility of preserving high-quality polished walls, veneered with mahogany, from the Soviet period. The apartment has no storage rooms or built-in wardrobes.
    Your opinion is very interesting. Thank you.

  15. Galina

    For a room to look well lit, the light must fall on vertical surfaces, that is, walls. The human eye is designed in such a way that in a room it perceives only light reflected from the vertical as bright. Therefore, there should be several different types of lamps in the room.

  16. Irina

    Hello Nellie. I read several of your articles and realized how many mistakes I can avoid. Thank you. I've been studying the lighting issue for a week now. Our room is an L-shaped room 3 in 1: living room, dining room and kitchen (living/dining room approx. 23.5 + appendix for the kitchen 4.5 sq. m.) How to choose the right lighting fixtures so that everything looks harmonious? Is a chandelier needed in the sofa area if it is above the table in the dining area, or are spotlights with a sconce or floor lamp sufficient? Is it worth separating the kitchen-dining area with pendant lamps if it is already zoned by a bar counter and a box above it? Could you at least push me in the right direction? Otherwise, the variety of contradictory articles is already making your head spin. Thank you in advance.

  17. Irina

    Thank you very much! Now all that’s left to do is choose the right chandelier... and more than one... May the force be with me...

  18. Olesya

    Please help me with the choice. The living room has ceilings of 2.20 and the room itself is 15 square meters. I have been dreaming of a hanging chandelier for a long time, but will it fit organically into my room? I'm afraid the light won't spread properly around the room. I had my eye on this chandelier. What do you think? https://lightmarket.ru/katalog/products/osveshenie/lustry/svetilnik-maytoni-arm257-06-g

  19. Sergey

    Olesya!
    Now they have begun to produce similar chandeliers with the ability to mount them rigidly without a top cup and chain, they will be about 350-550mm high, they look very cool. Or consider similar ceiling-mounted chandeliers.
    Or ask for help.

  20. Eugene

    Nelly Mikhailova, I read your article with pleasure. “The most terrible chandeliers” especially made me smile, you won’t believe it, but these are the chandeliers that are sold most often. especially the chandelier with square glass shades(5 picture from top to bottom) this is generally a top seller)))

  21. Alekhine

    In addition to the first mistake, I would also like to add that it is important to take into account the degree of darkness of the lampshade(s). After all, if their excessive darkness for the bedroom creates an atmosphere of intimacy and comfort, then for the living room such lamps will be too dim.

  22. Olesya

    I was just recently choosing a chandelier and discovered the fact that before I had never paid attention to the lighting area. And in the store, consultants never ask about the area of the room where the chandelier is chosen. While this is the most important thing - the chandelier should illuminate! Fortunately, in the online store where I purchased the chandelier, this indicator is in the first place in the description and I simply could not help but pay attention to it!

  23. Natalya

    I have the opinion that design in any style can look interesting. At the same time, any style can be killed by a lack of taste and harmony. In my opinion, the concept " nice interior" - this is when you get a beautiful picture as a whole. And the chandelier plays not the last role. This is like the finishing touch to the design. thanks for detailed description mistakes when choosing a chandelier.

  24. Olya

    Good afternoon, Nelly! In parallel to the question about the chandelier, I’m interested in your opinion about spotlights(is it appropriate to use them to illuminate, for example, a sofa-resting area) or is it better to use soffits with 3-4 bulbs? And you mentioned plasterboard niches. Is their use not relevant at all?

  25. Andrey

    Nice lamps I was looking for a long time, I came across good sites, I went there, the prices are low, I ordered, paid, the goods arrived quickly, here are the links: alpha-centre.ru and evrosvetpro.ru

  26. Katerina

    Good afternoon, Nelly!
    I came across your site by accident when I started doing renovations. Your article about wallpaper helped, which talked about the placement of the pattern on the entire wall. Before this I wanted to do it in pieces, but I stopped in time)))
    I am turning to you for advice.
    I had my eye on a chandelier for the room (room 6*3 with beige sand wallpaper, white ceiling, wood door yellow/golden): one is light (but I'm afraid it will blend in with the room), the other is darker. What's better?

    Another question:
    Tell me, are there any standards for selecting sconces? Not included.
    What to focus on?

    Hello! I’m studying the Internet about lighting and textiles in the apartment. I came across your site. Interesting. Hats off to people who bravely share their knowledge. I'm racking my brains over one question: the renovation is finished, the furniture is almost ready (the kitchen is in place, the hallway is in place, the living room is in order), now what comes first - light or curtains? What's the best way to start? Should I choose chandeliers/lamps first, or should I choose curtains?

  28. Elena

    Good morning. What do you think about the “octopus” type chandelier? And further. According to some designers, 2.5 m ceilings are very low, so the ceiling chandelier should either be removed altogether and replaced with other multi-level lighting, or made almost invisible, which will visually raise the ceiling. So I looked for an LED flat white lamp, large enough to illuminate a room of 18 sq. m. What do you think?

    Thank you, very useful information. Like everyone else, I was looking for an idea for a chandelier and came across this blog. I wanted to thank you.
    There is little adequate and live information on the Internet. And here there is a thank you.

Lighting plays one of the key roles in the design of space. Properly selected lamps can help create a cozy, inviting atmosphere in a room. For such an important room as a living room, where family or company gatherings are common, lighting fixtures are selected with special attention.

Often the living room is filled with various functions - all household members gather here to discuss the past day, watch TV or read a book. A home office or study area can also be located here, sometimes the living room is combined with a dining room or play area. And if your apartment is designed as a studio, then the large living room can accommodate almost all vital segments of the home. And all these nuances will need to be taken into account when choosing the central element of room lighting - a chandelier.

It will be important not only to decide on the design, size and power of the lighting device, but also to choose the right location, intensity of light fluxes, brightness and even color of lighting.

In addition to its main functionality - illuminating the living room space, the chandelier also performs the tasks of zoning, accenting and, of course, decorating the room. Properly selected intensity and brightness of the room will help not only visually expand the space (if necessary), but also provide a sufficient level of illumination for the functionally filled areas of the living room.

The center of any apartment or household is the living room, here you gather friends and relatives for celebrations or host small gatherings for evening gatherings, this is where important family decisions are made or communication simply takes place - the exchange of information between household members. Therefore, choosing a chandelier for a common room should be a joint activity for the family, as you watch the play of light reflected from many decorative elements luxury chandelier All family members will be there for more than one year.

If earlier (during the inception of the central lighting fixture of a room), chandeliers were made from very expensive materials and were available only to the wealthy classes of society, then these days it is not difficult to find a chandelier model that will suit the homeowner according to all criteria, given a budget of any size. There are a lot of design options for lighting fixtures, a wide range of styles and materials for manufacturing.

Before you go to the store to purchase a chandelier for your living room, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with several simple criteria that will influence the choice of a lighting fixture model that will harmoniously fit into the created or planned interior of the room:

  • the dimensions of the room and mainly the height of the room;
  • presence additional zones within the living room (library, office, dining room, reading corner);
  • the presence of accompanying lighting fixtures (floor or table floor lamps, wall sconces etc.);
  • the presence of built-in lighting on the ceiling, structural elements of the room or furniture;
  • general color palette of the room;
  • interior style;
  • dimensions of the main furniture (upholstered living room area);
  • presence of a fireplace.

Types of chandeliers for the living room - design features

Pendant chandeliers

This type of chandelier consists of one or more shades attached to a cord, string or chain. Hanging chandeliers are usually located quite long distance from the ceiling (their length can be adjusted depending on the height of the room). Ceiling lamps in hanging chandeliers can be made of fabric or plastic, but the most popular are products made of glass.

Depending on how long the suspension will be. A different lighting atmosphere is created in the living room - formal or more intimate. The nature of illumination will also be influenced by the brightness and color palette of the light fluxes of the central lighting fixture.

The only disadvantage of this type of chandelier is the inconvenience of use in small rooms with low ceilings. But, given that the living room is almost always the largest and big room in home ownership, then this problem goes away by itself.

Ceiling chandeliers

This type of lighting fixture does not have a suspension and is attached directly to the ceiling. For small spaces or low ceilings similar chandeliers can become ideal option design of the lighting system. Lampshades for ceiling chandeliers are also made of plastic or glass and can consist of several segments or be a single solid structure.

Ceiling chandeliers have one small drawback - as a rule, it is impossible to change the light bulb without removing the lamp shade.

Choosing a chandelier based on style

Classic chandeliers

The most popular and widespread type of chandelier is the classical version. For many of our compatriots, the very word “chandelier” is associated with this type of lighting device. A traditional chandelier has smooth lines, its appearance is luxurious and presentable, it can decorate a room made in both a classical style and modern room, decorated in the spirit of the latest fashion trends in interior design.

For the shades of classic chandeliers, traditional materials are used - glass, textiles, crystal and metal. For many Russian homeowners, a crystal chandelier is still a sign of not only wealth and luxury, but also the presence of good taste and style.

Paying tribute to the times when real candles were used in chandelier designs, classic models most often equipped with imitation light bulbs with holders reminiscent of the ancient way of lighting large spaces.

Another obvious advantage of classic chandeliers is their timeless compliance with trends. Traditional lighting fixtures for living rooms never go out of style; their appearance changes slightly over time. This means your investment will be justified long years.

Classic chandeliers are elegant and elegant; they can add a festive feeling to almost any living room. Even with a neutral room decoration, modest furnishings and minor decor, the living room will shine with luxury if the chandelier looks stunning.

In a wide range of classic chandeliers, one can highlight floral style devices. It is not difficult to guess from the name that such chandeliers actively use floral and plant themes in general - for the manufacture of lampshades and decorative elements of structures.

Often in modern interiors you can find models of classic chandeliers that harmoniously combine with designer decorative elements and structures. For example, a traditional chandelier placed inside an originally designed sphere or a lamp with two-level design elements in different styles.

A classic chandelier ceases to be a familiar lighting fixture for traditional interiors if color and brightness are added to the design of its decorative elements. Such models will already be successfully integrated into modern living rooms in an eclectic style or become focal points in rooms with minimalist furnishings.

For Provence, shabby chic and some country styles, a variation of a classic chandelier using a metal frame without excessive decoration and the use of hanging glass elements may be suitable.

Art Nouveau chandeliers

Once upon a time, the Art Nouveau style was called everything new and progressive that appeared in contrast to traditional stylistics. Nowadays, almost all design models of unusual (non-traditional) shape are commonly called Art Nouveau chandeliers. Chandeliers in this style fit harmoniously into modern interiors, minimalist rooms, and eclectic designs.

In modern design projects you can often find chandeliers made in the form of a single base, to which many strings or chains with shades are attached. Sometimes all the strings are located at the same height, forming a kind of cluster of lampshades with light bulbs, but more often the strings are located at different levels, creating interesting light compositions.

For a contemporary style, the most intricate design of a ceiling chandelier may be suitable. It is in this style that the art object will look harmonious (there is no other way to describe modern design models of lighting fixtures) as the focal point of the living room.

A bright, unusual chandelier design can transform a completely boring and even austere living room decor. Moreover, the brightness of a lighting device can be not only obvious - expressed in colorful color, but also through an extraordinary approach to the shape and decor of the lighting item.

In modern living rooms you can increasingly see chandeliers with minimalist decor. Simple geometric shapes, lack of hanging elements and monotony color palette, together they create very laconic models that can decorate almost any living room interior.

A bright chandelier can harmoniously fit into the colorful interior of an eclectic living room or become the center of attention in a bright, neutral room shared by the whole family.

Eco-style chandeliers

Despite the fact that eco-style is often associated with rustic motifs indoors, it is also successfully used in the design of city apartments, townhouses and even public spaces.

Obviously, the presence of natural materials for making an eco-style chandelier is mandatory. Wood and metal become the central components of structures, which can be decorated with tree branches, straw, herbariums and other elements that can connect the homeowner's urban life with the nature of the environment.

And yet, eco-style chandeliers look most harmonious in the spacious living rooms of country houses. Filled with the warmth of natural materials and decorative elements, such lighting fixtures echo not only similar raw materials used for finishing and furnishing the room, but also the very atmosphere of closeness to nature.

Usually, ceiling chandeliers in living rooms they are installed in the geometric center of the room. But recently, more and more shared family rooms have two or more distinct zones of the room. If your living room is combined with a dining room, then the logical move would be to illuminate not only the main space of the seating area, but also the lighting of the dining group.

If two or more living segments of a room are combined within one space, you can choose one of two options for organizing lighting - use two chandeliers to illuminate the corresponding areas or leave a ceiling lamp in one segment and choose Alternative option: floor lamp, wall lamps or table lamps (depending on the functionality of the zone).

Most often, designers and homeowners, when deciding to install two chandeliers in the living room, choose the same models to maintain the symmetry and balance of the room. But an option with models that are different in design, but similar in style (to each other and to the style of your room) can become the highlight of the interior and bring not only an element of surprise to the room, but also make its design more unique.

For some living rooms, it will be logical to place the chandelier not in the center, but, for example, away from the fireplace or near a soft area, which can consist of both a sofa and two armchairs separated by a stand. The nuances of the location of the chandelier on the ceiling depend on the occupancy of the living room with furniture and areas with different functions.

Having multiple lighting sources in the living room allows each family member to do what they want while remaining part of the overall campaign. The overhead light emanating from the chandeliers of the common room, in turn, can unite household members and their guests for a common activity - a conversation or a game.

And finally, a little boring, but very useful information about the criteria for choosing a chandelier for the living room, based on technical characteristics lighting fixtures:

  • The optimal and sufficient power of a chandelier for a living room is considered to be 150-350 W (depending on the size of the room);
  • Modern chandeliers can use both conventional incandescent lamps and LED, fluorescent and halogen lamps. The light from incandescent lamps is the most comfortable for the eyes to read, but even such light sources have very low efficiency and they consume a lot of electricity. The service life of incandescent lamps is the shortest among all possible light sources. Fluorescent lamps are approximately 4 times more powerful than incandescent lamps and will last almost 10 times longer. All you have to do is decide on the color temperature of the fluorescent lamps. The cool spectrum of lighting is more suitable for rooms where you need to work, read, or engage in creativity. For a calm and relaxing atmosphere in the living room, a warm lighting palette is more suitable. But don't choose too much warm colors– your eyes will get tired very quickly. Halogen lamps are usually used when bright and intense lighting is needed. If your plans include constant housework and the living room area is not the only place to relax in the house or apartment, then what lamps will help you save on electricity and changing new light sources. LED bulbs often used for efficiency - they consume the least amount of electricity and can last for many years. But this type of light source is not suitable for every room (it all depends on the size and functionality);

  • Must be selected in proportion to the size of the room;
  • They can be created in the same style, but have a variety of forms;
  • It is not necessary to hang it in the central part of the room;
  • Lighting fixtures must be combined.

Selecting several devices is more difficult than choosing one chandelier. The owner of the hall must resolve certain issues related to suitable model chandeliers, its size and the like. Professional designers will recommend a suitable solution, style and shape.

Competently choosing a suitable chandelier for the living room is always a long and rather painstaking process. And the variety of models offered on modern market, makes such a choice much more difficult.

It is important to place the chandelier in such a way as to provide equal lighting throughout the area. You can place it in a specific area, and provide other areas with additional light sources.
