Do you want to make a beautiful and practical piece of furniture yourself? Then try making a bean bag chair and any other variations frameless furniture.
It's not that difficult, the main thing is not to make mistakes with the patterns and find a good filler. Let you be inspired by the fact that in online stores bean bags cost an average of 2.5 thousand rubles apiece. You'll likely end up with some hefty savings. In addition, you can choose your fabric option, which is most suitable for you. in the best possible way matches your interior.

What are the benefits of bean bag chairs?
They were invented not so long ago by Italian designers. The bean bag chair is quite lightweight, it quickly transforms to suit individual body shapes specific person– this is an indescribable feeling of comfort. You can fluff it up like a pillow and lie down and sit more comfortably. Many people note that bean bags relax their backs and especially lumbar region. And children also love this furniture!
What are they made of?
The key point is the filler. The most common is foamed polystyrene (expanded polystyrene), more precisely, polystyrene chips, with granules from 1.5 to 5 mm.
Don't be confused by the "smart" name. Polystyrene is the same foam. It is absolutely hygienic, safe from an environmental point of view, does not absorb moisture, does not rot, and does not harbor mites or bacteria. Moreover, polystyrene foam is an excellent insulation material. Chairs with such “stuffing” will never be “cold”.
Your task is to find exactly the crumbs, and not the foam plates. It is not a fact that your search will immediately be crowned with success. Call furniture manufacturing companies construction companies and supermarkets.
Please note that polystyrene foam is sold in large quantities, as a rule, the minimum volume is one cubic meter. It's a lot. You can't carry it by hand; you'll need a car. One cubic meter is usually enough for 4 medium-sized bean bags. The cost of a cubic meter of polystyrene foam chips is from 950-1000 rubles.
It is more profitable to unite and go to wholesale stores.
From leftover polystyrene foam you can also make decorative pillows, as well as fun toys for kids. Over time, polystyrene foam becomes damaged and compacted, so it’s worth leaving a small bag of filling in reserve.
In the hayloft
You can get creative and make bean bags with unconventional fillings - for example, with fragrant hay or buckwheat husks (like the famous pillows). Just keep in mind that all these materials are very sensitive to high humidity. And when intensive use the filling will have to be changed every 6-12 months.

An excellent frameless bed, and the pattern is simple and the bean bag chair is a pyramid-shaped pattern.
Textile
The bean bag chair consists of two covers - an internal one, where the filling is placed, and an external one.
The inner cover should be made from durable fabric, you can take a raincoat fabric or a mattress one. For outdoor use, it’s worth looking for good furniture fabrics, but denim, velvet, and faux leather, and suede. Please note that if the fabric is cheap, then the outer cover can be changed as many times as you like, it’s even more interesting!
Online stores emphasize that they use super-fabric with fantastic abrasion resistance, hence high price behind finished item. But think about it, do you really need the durability of the outer case in this particular case?
The outer cover is made with a zipper approximately 50-60 cm. The zipper must be metal and durable. It is advisable to place it in the part of the chair that will be located below, so that it does not break due to accidental excessive load on the chair. An alternative to a zipper is several buttons.

How to cut?
The situation with patterns is not the best. But ingenuity will always help needlewomen. Start with the most simple shapes– from ottomans, sausages (they can be rolled into knots and woven original chair or sofa), bananas, then move on to trapezoids and only then to more complex pear-shaped and teardrop-shaped shapes.
You can make a lot of variations with a chair in the form of a regular one, only very large pillows- here and comfortable mattress, and a chair with a back, if you put the “cushion” in a triangle.
To begin, make a small pattern on paper, to the appropriate scale, fold it, check if everything fits.

The seams for the covers should be especially strong, about the same as on jeans. You should not use ordinary cotton threads, but reinforced ones, because they will have to withstand a large load.

remember, that main secret successful production of frameless furniture - loose filling of the covers, only two-thirds. Otherwise there will be no plasticity and easy flow of forms.

A bean bag chair, a bean bag chair, a big bag and just a big soft pouf - so many different names this thing, which this master class is dedicated to making with your own hands!
You can buy such a chair, but it is much more interesting (and, by the way, more economical) to sew it yourself. Everything is very, very simple.
For the chair we will need the following materials:
fabric for the inner cover, quite dense and, preferably, slippery (I sewed my cover from an old synthetic curtain, just the slippery fabric);
the fabric for the outer cover is thick and elegant (I used cotton fabric);
zipper – 1 m long (or two 50 cm each) – for the outer cover;
zipper 40 cm – for the inner cover;
foam granules.
There are so many free pear chair patterns you can find online. As a beginner seamstress, I chose the simplest one and adapted it to my sizes.
My free pattern consists of three parts:
Main part;
Top part;
Bottom.

Both covers are sewn using this pattern: outer and inner. And then, attention!
Important point
The zipper of the inner cover is short, we sew it on side B, and side A is the fold.
(In the photo below there is an inner case, already with balls, a zipper on the front)

On the outer cover, the zipper should be larger, so you sew the larger zipper in side A, and B is the fold line.
(The photo below shows the outer case, the zipper is not visible, it’s on the back)

It's simple: when both covers are sewn, fill the inner bag with foam granules, fasten and put on the top cover.

It turns out to be a cool anatomical chair. Very light, by the way, for the armchair.

Note to the owner:)
1. Foam granules are very light. Don’t make my mistake - I took 10 kg without looking. And now she is doomed to sew chairs for all her relatives. 10 kg. - This is a bag the size of a car.
2. Polystyrene foam granules become highly electrified and scatter, sticking to walls, furniture, etc. and so on. You can deal with flying balls using a vacuum cleaner or a dust brush. A brush (such a multi-colored broom) is perhaps even better.

A bean bag chair or, as it is also called, a bean bag chair is easy to move from room to room. Sit in front of the TV, or on the country lawn. It can be whatever you want and it’s not at all difficult to make.

Any mixed fabric is suitable for the inner cover.

For a pear chair 120x90 cm you will need:
– Filler (polystyrene balls) – 0.3 – 0.4 m3
— Fabric for the inner cover — 2.5 m x 1.4 m
— Fabric for the outer cover — 2.5 m x 1.4 m
— Zippers – 40 cm and 1 m
— Velcro — 10 cm x 5 cm
Strong threads
- Scissors

To sew a large chair, you will need 3.6 m x 1.4 m of fabric for each cover.

Step 1: Cut the fabric

Transfer the pattern to graph paper or parchment paper and cut it out. Do the same with the bottom, top and handle. Place the pattern on the fabric, trace with chalk or soap, then cut it out.

Position of the pattern on the fabric

Step 2: Sewing covers

Fold two wedges front side inside. Sew them together, leaving a seam allowance of 1-1.5 cm. Similarly, we sew all six wedges and sew on a zipper. Stitch on the front side, taking in the seam allowances. Then we sew on the bottom and top of the bag. To avoid unnecessary waste, the bottom part of the bag consists of 4 parts; if desired, you can make it from 2 parts or even a whole one. Use the same method to sew the outer capsule bag.

Step 3: Filling the capsule with polystyrene beads

Make a funnel out of paper by rolling it into a ball. Insert the narrow edge of the funnel into the inner capsule bag. Sprinkle required amount filler from the packaging into the capsule (about three quarters). Make sure there are no polystyrene beads left in the funnel, then remove it. Zip all the zippers on the covers all the way.

The chair is ready! All that remains is to vacuum the room.

Now this designer chair has become widely known in all corners of the world. Until now, it does not have an exact name - bean bag chair, pear chair, pouf, bean bag. Nevertheless, the essence remains the same - this is comfortable frameless furniture with soft filling, which even a novice seamstress can easily make with her own hands.

What are the benefits of frameless furniture?

A feature of this type of furniture is the absence of a rigid frame. The classic variation has the shape of a drop (pear). The chair is a bag with soft loose filling that imitates liquid. An effect is created similar to that if the inner cover was filled with water - the chair takes the shape of the human body and evenly distributes its weight.

After just two minutes of rest in such a chair, you can feel the relaxation of the back muscles and the removal of stress from the spine. Due to the low thermal conductivity of the filler - foam balls - an additional warming effect begins to be felt very quickly. Polystyrene foam works as a heat reflector and warms the person sitting with the energy of his own body.

The traditional frameless chair is pear-shaped

Today, frameless furniture designers are constantly searching for new solutions. There are already models on sale not only of the most different sizes(for a child, for one or more adults), but also in shapes (drop-shaped, round, rectangular, in the form of fantasy figures). The bean bag chair will easily warm you up and help you fall asleep. active child, not to mention the mother, tired of everyday worries. Therefore, the desire to have such an accessory for relaxation at home is quite understandable. However, there is no need to rush to the store to buy it. Even novice craftswomen can sew a bean bag chair.

The main advantages of a bean bag chair include the following aspects:

  1. Loose filler increases the level of rest comfort.
  2. Frameless furniture is safe because it does not have sharp corners, which allows it to be used in children's rooms. And environmentally clean materials reduce the likelihood of allergies to zero.
  3. The chair is very practical; thanks to its light weight, it can be easily moved during cleaning.

  5. A bean bag will fit into any interior; all you need to do is choose the right design.

Important! If you are planning a renovation and a change of design, do not rush to throw away your old bean bag chair - just add some filling to it, sew a suitable cover, and it will become the highlight of the new interior.

Tools and materials

Footage required material and the amount of filler varies depending on the dimensions of the intended bean bag.

In order to sew a medium-sized chair with a diameter of approximately 85 cm (for 1 adult), you will need:

1. Paper for making patterns, tracing paper or graph paper is best.
2. Fabric for sewing the inner cover - smooth synthetic. The length of the cut is 3 meters with a width of 150 cm. It is better to take a light material without a print so that it does not show through the outer cover.

It is better to choose a sliding fabric so that the chair better takes the shape of the person sitting.

3. Thick (preferably furniture) fabric for the outer removable cover. The length of the cut is 320 cm with a width of 150 cm. It should be a little larger so that the inner bag with filling fits easily into it.

When choosing a material, give preference to durable canvases. It is better to choose materials that are dense, resistant to abrasion and frequent washing. It can be linen, denim, tapestry, velor, phlox, artificial fur and even eco-leather. Select colors in accordance with the overall color scheme interior

4. Two zippers 40 cm and 60 cm long (for the inner and outer cover, respectively).
5. Filler. In this case, we take 0.5 cubic meters of foam plastic with a crumb fraction of approximately 0.5 cm. You can buy it online or at any specialized hardware store.

The minimum packaging of polystyrene foam is usually the 0.5 cubic meters we need. m.

6. Sewing machine, reinforced threads.
7. Chalk or pencil, ruler, pins.

Filler selection

Most often, frameless furniture manufacturers use polystyrene foam granules as filler. Foam balls They are considered the most hygienic filler, as they do not absorb dirt, sweat and odors. This is especially true when the bean bag chair is used in in public places(cafes, show rooms, lounge areas). Expanded polystyrene is non-hygroscopic, and insects will not grow in it. In addition, this filler is the most affordable.

Expanded polystyrene is the best filler for frameless chair

For those who are looking for an environmentally friendly and natural alternative to polystyrene foam, we can advise choosing materials such as:

  • horsehair;
  • wood shavings;
  • seeds, herbs, buckwheat husks;
  • peas, beans and beans, rice, millet;
  • wool, feathers or down.

However, when choosing an organic filler, it is worth considering that such a chair can only be used in a room with moderate humidity. Otherwise, molding may begin.

Important! Feathers and down can cause allergies.

If you decide to use sawdust, pay attention to their quality. Before filling the bag, be sure to inspect the shavings and remove any chips, otherwise you risk getting splinters or scratches. It is better to use cedar shavings. It has a pleasant smell, which is famous healing properties and will repel insects.

It is also necessary to take into account that over time you will need to completely replace or add an additional portion of filler, since it tends to wrinkle.

Pattern and step-by-step sewing instructions with photos

On the given pattern there are two options for cutting the lower circle of the chair. The first option involves sewing the bottom from two semicircular parts, and the second - from four. You will need to cut out 6 side wedges, 1 top piece (hexagon), 1 handle piece, 2 or 4 bottom pieces from fabric. We will sew the inner and outer covers at the same time.

Material selection

To sew the product you will need 2 types of fabric. After all, a bean bag chair consists of an internal and external cover. Before choosing a material, decide on the model. Because each variety has its own pattern. It is better to sew a bean bag chair from whole pieces of fabric. That is why initially select a model and calculate the required amount of material.

The following materials can be used:

  • satin;
  • tissi (this kind of fabric is used for making workwear);
  • raincoat or mattress textiles;
  • polyester material (it is durable and does not allow water to pass through).

How much fabric is needed on average? For example, you chose the pear chair pattern. Beanbag in finished form will have the following dimensions: diameter - 90 cm, height - 120 cm. Such a design requires about 2.5 m of fabric, the width of which is 115-122 cm.

For the outer cover, choose a fabric that will harmoniously fit into your interior. The most commonly used materials are:

  • flock;
  • chenille;
  • artificial suede;
  • velours;
  • jacquard;
  • faux fur or leather;
  • tapestry.

Features of the cut

Your soft bean bag chair will last for many years. That is why to choose upholstery fabric should be approached very carefully. In addition, it should be possible to remove the top cover for washing. To do this, be sure to sew in a zipper when sewing.

  2. Fabric for inner and outer cover.
  3. Lightning - 2 pcs.
  4. Pencil, ruler, chalk, scissors.

They are very dangerous if they get into respiratory system! If the balls do scatter, collect them with a vacuum cleaner. But to avoid this, it is recommended to pour the filler through a watering can, paper funnel or plastic bottle with a cut bottom.
  7. The bag should not be filled to capacity. Remember that the beauty of this design is that it adapts perfectly to the shape of the body. Therefore, the filler needs to be filled 2/3 full.
  8. Put on the top bag. Zip up. The soft bean bag chair is ready. You can enjoy your work.

  1. A completely different pattern is used for the model. You can use the one below or build your own. The pattern is for classic product- these are hexagon and pentagon.
  2. When cutting on fabric, it should be taken into account that there should be many such parts. Pentagons should be cut out - 12 pcs. And you will need 20 hexagons. It is very important to accurately cut and cut parts. Even the slightest deviation can cause the model to skew.
  3. Before starting to assemble the product, it is recommended to process all parts with an overlocker. It’s even better to decorate the cuts with edging. Of course, this will take a lot of time, but such details will definitely not fall apart.
  4. Now you need to sweep the product. Difficulties can arise with lightning. After all, the fastener simply won’t fit on one side. Therefore, the zipper should be positioned along a curve.

You already know how to sew a bean bag chair and put stuffing into it. That's why this procedure It shouldn't cause you any difficulties.

Beanbag: “drop”

This is another type of frameless furniture that may interest you.

The pattern below is transferred to graph paper. A drop bean bag chair is made as follows:

  1. The pattern below is transferred to graph paper.
  2. When laying out the parts on the fabric, be sure to take this into account. This will protect the model from skewing. For one cover you need: 2 sides, 1 bottom, 1 top.
  3. Now sweep away the pieces. Mark the zippers.
  4. Finish the edges and stitch according to the marks.
  5. Add filler. Close the zippers.
