A flat roof until recently was considered something complicated and of poor quality. Today, when modern materials have undergone tremendous changes, this type of roof is considered one of the best. For many developers, the decisive factor is the low cost of the entire structure. In addition to its low cost, it has big amount benefits. The sequence of layers during the installation of the roof is determined depending on the need for operation. In any case, vapor barrier plays an important role. TechnoNIKOL is the most popular material for flat roof and it will be discussed in this article.

General information about the flat roof

Flat roofs are becoming more and more popular every year.. This variety came to us with Western countries especially from the US and Europe. In the west, it is quite normal if a small lawn is placed on the roof of the house or trees grow. Often you can find housing on the roofs of which various banquets are held or cars are parked.

Flat roof is divided into several subspecies. It can be performed by the traditional method and inversion. In the first case, you will not be able to operate the roof, so developers often turn their attention to the second option. There is no external difference between these varieties, the whole snag lies in the position of the layers roofing cake.

Act as a protective layer traditional roofing account for roofing materials. As a rule, this bituminous products. They can be installed both in the built-up method and in bulk. By the way, the latter are distinguished by their waterproofing qualities due to the complete monolithic surface. It is worth noting that some of bulk surfaces cannot even support the weight of an average person. In this regard, the device of these roofs is not appropriate in regions with intense precipitation.

As for the inversion roof, here, after thermal insulation boards concrete screed is being laid. To reduce the weight of a concrete element, it is often mixed with bulk material, but this is possible only in the case of small loads on the roof. For example, the arrangement of a playground or the placement of sun loungers on the roof surface will be considered light loads.

Vapor barrier on a flat roof

Before talking about the material itself, let me tell you about the nuances assembly process. Let's speculate on the topic: is vapor barrier needed at all, and if not, then why overpay.

Understanding the importance of vapor barrier comes after you remember some physics lessons. There is always some moisture in the air. It is a fact that air humidity can be measured using a special device.

In addition to natural water vapor in the air, additional moisture is produced as a result of everyday human activity. An example is the process of cooking, washing dishes, brushing teeth, washing, etc. Even when people breathe, they release a certain amount of liquid.

warmed up room temperature moisture gradually rises. Having reached the ceiling, the process of condensation takes place. Due to the lower temperature at the ceiling, the steam cools down and settles on the opposite side of the element. Thus, water enters the attic space, and then into the roofing pie.

And everything would be fine if this process did not greatly affect the insulation boards. The ingress of liquid into the insulated roofing cake immediately reduces its positive properties by more than half. If you think that everything can be fixed by drying the material, then you are mistaken. Insulation boards will never have their original properties, and in a couple of years you will need expensive repairs.

To prevent this from happening, a vapor barrier layer must be laid. It does not allow moisture to pass further than the attic space. As for the truss system, it will be protected natural ventilation, removing excess moisture through its channels.

Now that you know why a vapor barrier is laid for a flat roof, you can consider its structural composition as a whole.

  • Base. As a rule, for flat roofs for this fit reinforced concrete slab or profiled metal sheets. If you plan to exploit the surface of your roof, then you will need the first option, and if you can do without it, the second
  • Insulation boards. At this stage, installation mineral plates or foam. The type of roof will help you decide: traditional or inversion. As an alternative, you can always choose other insulation
  • waterproofing layer. It is equipped with special roofing products or membranes. If you are concerned about the financial component, then it is best to use bitumen-based materials, membranes are much more expensive
  • roofing surface. All materials with high waterproofing. The fact is that a flat roof has a small slope (less than 5 percent) and not every coating can long time withstand precipitation without leaking. The ideal solution is the products of Technonikol, they will be discussed below

Note that this list did not include a vapor barrier layer. By highlighting it, I once again indicate its importance. Protection of the roofing pie from moisture coming from the inside should be located between the base and the insulation boards. Its functional task is to block the access of moisture coming from the inside.

Materials from technonikol

Not so long ago, construction stores received material under the Technonikol brand. All developers were skeptical about this phenomenon, because they already had a good product called ruberoid. Old bituminous material could perform the functions of both a waterproofing layer and a vapor barrier. The problem was that with intensive protection, he could not cope with the pressure of moisture and, under its influence, collapsed in just a few years. At the end of this period, residents of private houses had to change the coverage.

It cannot be said that technonicol has completely ousted roofing material from the market. Most developers continue to use the old roll product, but modern material has a number of advantages.

  1. Increased strength indicators
  2. Great elasticity
  3. Improved waterproof performance
  4. The surface of the material does not undergo the process of decay and does not breed microorganisms
  5. Meets all fire safety requirements
  6. Resistant to high mechanical stress

This list can be continued for quite a long time, in short, technonicol is good in everything compared to roofing material. The most popular vapor barrier material today is considered a three-layer membrane. This coating is designed specifically for flat roofs.

If we divide it into components and consider them separately, then each film will perform the following tasks:

  • Do not allow moisture that has fallen on the roof in the form of precipitation
  • Block access to moist air coming from inside living quarters

It is worth noting that such a product is a good protection with a thickness of only 1.2 millimeters. If we compare the vapor barrier produced by this company and other brands, then it is their surface that copes with mechanical loads much better than the others.

The insulating material is laid directly on the base, regardless of its material. Due to its structural features, there is no need for its thorough preparation. For laying, it is enough to clean the surface and repair large defects.

If you are going to force the roof plane with elements of a large mass, then it is best to purchase a reinforced vapor barrier material. Its structure is not much different from the previous type, but includes durable polyethylene strips. A laminated surface is applied over the already known layers to give the material greater protection.

It should not be assumed that technonicol production materials are used only in the arrangement of flat roofs, they can be used on absolutely any structures. The versatility of this material allows it to be laid anywhere, even to insulate walls and floors.

Additional layers significantly increase the mass of the material, so when laying it, this factor should always be taken into account. In addition to weight increases, and the price for 1 square meter, therefore, developers prefer to reduce their needs and arrange a simple three-layer membrane.

Often, for the arrangement of a flat roof, developers use reinforced vapor barrier of the Technonikol brand. This type of material has a similar structure to the previous type. It contains the usual layers, but in the middle of them a mesh is laid, consisting of durable strips of polyethylene. They are the reinforcing component. On top of them, the product is laminated on both sides, which gives it higher performance.

If you compare such products with roofing material, then their installation will cost you significantly more, but after 10 years you will pay for everything. When erecting a temporary structure, it is best to use the old roll material, so you save quite a tangible amount.

But if you are going to arrange a high-quality roofing pie for a residential building, then by all means buy material under the Technonikol brand.

Insulation of the exterior walls and roof of the house reduces heat loss and keeps favorable conditions in residential premises. Long-term operation of the building is ensured by enclosing structures that are not damaged by climatic influences. Hydro and vapor barrier for roofing Russian company TechnoNIKOL protects the traditional mineral fiber insulation, which easily absorbs moisture from internal evaporation and atmospheric precipitation. Wetting a porous material leads to an increase in its thermal conductivity, the return of condensate to the room, and the formation of conditions for the development of fungal microorganisms.

In the absence of a protective barrier, rotting of wooden roof structures, a change in humidity levels and a violation of interior decoration occur. Multilayer vapor barrier TechnoNikol prevents the formation of excess condensate in the fibrous mineral insulation. The membrane allows air to pass through and maintains its natural circulation in the room. The characteristics of the breathable material allow you to create a microclimate with performance wooden structure. TechnoNikol produces several types of vapor barrier film, which is used in the insulation of pitched and flat roofs, frame walls, ventilated facades.

Varieties of insulation

Mats are usually chosen as basalt wool or expanded clay gravel. Both materials have good hygroscopicity and easily absorb moisture. Rolled vapor barrier for flat roofs TechnoNikol will reliably protect the porous insulation from condensate that forms from the side of the warm slab. Three layers of polyethylene have a special density and can withstand the increased load of the coating, atmospheric precipitation in the form of snow marks and a large volume of water. The vapor barrier is laid on concrete slab or a metal sheet overlap, where it serves as a barrier to humid air from the premises and additionally protect bearing structures houses from climatic influences.

Three-layer vapor barrier For pitched roofs and walls TechnoNikol called Optima consists of two sheets of non-woven spunbond polypropylene and a film membrane between them. The inner layer with pores with a diameter less than a water molecule allows air to pass through, but retains steam. Double-sided polypropylene threads provide vapor barrier strength in tension and compression, which allows it to be used in the range from -40 to + 80C. Laminated material resistant to temperature changes, humid, acidic or alkaline environment.

Breathable vapor barrier Optima TechnoNikol is suitable for protecting insulation gable roof attic, exterior walls frame type, ventilated facades. The film is laid from the side warm room, front surface inside. The micropores of the three-layer barrier partially pass vapors that do not linger in mineral wool, thanks to TechnoNikol diffuse waterproofing. Bilateral protection of a heater provides preservation of working characteristics and long term of operation.

In addition to the use on the side of a residential attic, the vapor barrier of the Optima TechnoNikol series is used for external insulation of a gable roof along the rafters and when installing a roof with a cold attic. Unilateral diffusion of vapor through a three-layer polymer membrane prevents the formation of condensate and negative impact on wooden supporting structures. Vapor barrier on cold roof protects the interior of the house from wind, moisture and dust.

Reinforced vapor barrier for the roof consists of a durable polymer mesh, which is coated on both sides with polyethylene by ultrasonic welding. Impervious to moisture three-layer film withstands increased tensile loads, which makes it possible to use it on flat roofs, gable roofs attics and cold attics, in frame structures and internal wall insulation. Reinforced vapor barrier laid horizontally or vertically from the side of a warm room, regardless of the layer marking. The versatility of the material makes it more high cost, which pays off in strength, tensile and load resistance.

Specifications

An important element in the roofing cake is the vapor barrier of the roof. In short, a layer of vapor barrier material protects the insulation from oversaturation with moisture and, as a result, loss of thermal insulation properties. To avoid this situation, it is necessary to perform both hydro and vapor barrier of the roof.

Well, if it’s already quite on the case, then the answer is already clear from the subtitle. Laying a vapor barrier on the roof protects or isolates the insulation from steam.

It's that simple. But where does the steam come from? There is such a thing as moisture transfer. The room inside becomes damp for several reasons:

  • Cooking food;
  • human breath;
  • Taking a shower;

It's no secret that warm air tends to rise. In addition, its ability to carry moisture (steam) is much higher than that of a cold one. So, together it carries moisture with it. What obstacles does this couple meet on its way? It can be:

  • Concrete and wooden floors;
  • Internal lining of the ceiling and roof.

However, part of the steam still reaches the very top of the roof - the place where the roofing cake is located. And if there were no vapor barrier for the roof, all this steam would directly enter the insulation.

Given that the foam (foam), the insulation is not carried out inside, the heater means mineral wool, which is used most often.

For example, here is a statement that can be found on the official website of TechnoNikol - major manufacturer stone wool:

“Stone wool should not be directly soaked, because it loses its properties when wet”

So, why do you need a vapor barrier? We found out that the inside of the insulation must be covered with a vapor film to prevent steam from entering it. The roof must first be insulated, and only then covered with a film from the inside.

Protective membrane outside

A waterproofing coating is used under the main roofing (for example, for a roof made of metal). Since with outside the insulation will be affected not only by steam, but also by water in two other states, for example in the form of rain, waterproofing is needed there. Usage vapor barrier membrane like Izospan B, for outdoor work it would be a big mistake.

By the way, it is very interesting and scientific about whether a vapor barrier is needed, is described in the video below.

What to use

As in many cases, there are different materials used to solve a single problem. Roof insulation is no exception.

Polyethylene films

For a roof vapor barrier device, sometimes high material strength is required, for example, if we are talking about insulation attic floor. To increase the strength of polyethylene, they began to reinforce it. These films are of two types:

  • perforated;
  • Non-perforated.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the films on the one hand, covered with aluminum foil. Their ability to resist steam is much higher than that required for ordinary rooms. More often, such films are used for saunas and baths, so it makes no sense to choose them for the roof.

However, there are films that have two significant advantages over polyethylene.

Polypropylene films

The notorious advantages of such films are:

  • Higher strength;
  • UV resistant.

For example, such films can protect open rafters from rain and snow throughout the year.

There is a particularly attractive appearance of films made from this material. Films with antioxidant coating. On the one hand, such films are covered with a layer of viscose fiber with cellulose. This coating is able to absorb moisture (condensed steam) and store it for a certain time. After the cause of the condensation disappears, the layer dries quickly, preventing moisture from penetrating into the thermal insulation. It is important to lay such a film correctly. The antioxidant layer should be facing down from the insulation.

Most often purchased films of the following brands:

  • TechnoNIKOL,
  • Isospan;
  • Klober;
  • Tyvek
  • Juta;
  • Nikofol;
  • Izovek.

Did you know?

For roof insulation, glassine used to be used. Now this material is practically not used. There are much more perfect, and relatively inexpensive materials. Also previously used roofing felt, roofing material, or ordinary plastic film.

What vapor barrier to choose for the roof? As we have seen, this mainly depends on two factors:

  • Places where insulating material is applied;
  • The financial capacity of the owner.

Having noticed the possible types of vapor barrier, you can more clearly understand which vapor barrier is best for the roof. We settled on polypropylene films with an antioxidant coating.

Principles of vapor barrier installation

Installing a roof vapor barrier is not a difficult process in itself, however, there are some nuances here. So, the following can be distinguished:

  • Lay the vapor barrier on top of the thermal insulation. Both horizontal and vertical laying of a film is possible. Lay the film horizontally (transversely to the rafters) starting from the top row and moving down. It is imperative to make an overlap of 10, and preferably 15 centimeters. The films are nailed to the crate with a construction stapler. To fix the joints, two types of tapes are used: double-sided and one-sided. The double-sided tape is glued onto the inner strip of the film and covered with the next one. A single-sided tape is used to fix the seams from the outside and glued directly at the junction.
  • If you need to lay the insulation vertically, make sure that the joint falls on the crate, otherwise the film may tear, even if it is glued with tape. (Besides, on weight it is very inconvenient).
  • In places where the film adjoins the windows (if the roof is attic), a special apron is used. If such an element is not included with the film, stick a special tape not at the joint.
  • On top of the laid insulation is fixed additional beam like a crate. This is necessary in order to vapor barrier for the roof and inner lining had a ventilation gap between them and air circulation was possible. Minimum Thickness timber 25 mm, desirable 50 mm.
  • Avoid foam sagging. Mount it tightly.

What is neglected

As already mentioned, the vapor barrier of the roof is a simple matter, but there are several flaws that are often found here. For example, good, expensive European films are purchased, and let's say, connecting tapes order from China. Doing so is extremely wrong. Or even the material is not used for its intended purpose. For example, Izospan V is used as waterproofing.

Also, puncture sites with self-tapping screws should always be fixed with aluminum-coated tape. Alas, often on the roof you can find torn insulation. Holes greatly reduce protection and steam quickly penetrates into mineral wool, forming frost and breaking the heat-saving layer.

Cost calculation

How much does it cost to create a vapor barrier for a roof? The price depends on the density (measured in grams per square meter) and the brand of the manufacturer. Rolls are from 1 to 3 meters wide (rolls wider are rare).

For example, a vapor barrier membrane Tyvek Air Guard SD5, a roll 1.5 m wide and 50 m long, costs 9.5 thousand rubles. ($164). This means that 1 square meter of such insulation will cost 126 rubles or $2.17.

Roll Izovek In Eco costs only 540 rubles or 9.3 dollars. (Size 1.6 by 44 m). Thus, 1 square meter of vapor barrier will cost 7.67 rubles or 0.13 dollars. In our example last option will be 17 times cheaper.

An Izospan RS about the same size will cost around 1,800 rubles ($30).

Do not forget to include docking tapes and adhesive tape, as well as stacked brackets in the calculation. When ordering a complex roof, laying a vapor barrier (the work itself) will cost 40-80 rubles per square meter.

Roof vapor barrier - the most expensive, but important element roofing cake. Vapor barrier provides reliable protection truss system from decay, and the insulation performs its functions.

Vapor barrier

VAPOR INSULATION OF THE ROOF. VAPOR PROOFING OF WALLS.

Modern, energy-efficient residential buildings are built using contemporarythermal insulation materials. With their help, not only the outer walls are insulated, but also the ceilings and the roof. However, for durable and reliable thermal insulation of the cottage, it is important to pay attention not only to the choice of high-quality insulation, but also to the vapor barrier device.

In a heated room, moist steam is formed, the pressure of which is much higher than atmospheric pressure. Steam puts pressure on all building envelopes - walls, ceilings, roofs, trying to get out. Modern thermal insulation materials based on mineral fiber have good vapor permeability, i.e. "breathe". However, in winter, at sub-zero temperatures, moisture vapor inevitably "gets stuck" in thermal insulation material: having reached the dew point (a section of the wall where conditions arise for the transformation of steam into water), the steam will not be able to move further and will begin to condense. The result - the insulation, and sometimes the wall itself, will get wet. To avoid this, another layer is added to the structure - a vapor barrier.

1. Vapor barrier

2. Frame

3. Roof

The purpose of using a vapor barrier is to prevent the ingress and accumulation of moisture in the insulation. Vapor barriers are widely used in the construction of pitched and flat roofs, frame-type walls. In other words, the vapor barrier creates a vapor barrier on the inside of the insulation to keep the insulation dry for the entire service life.

Ability vapor barrier materials not letting steam from inside the room into the thermal insulation reduces the likelihood of an increase in the thermal conductivity of the insulation due to possible condensation of water in it. The installation of a vapor barrier layer is a very important stage in the production of work, especially in the case of frequent temperature changes. If the vapor barrier is poorly installed, then the thermal insulation and the frame of the roof and wall quickly lose their functional characteristics, the house becomes damp, mold and fungus start up. Vapor barrier layer must be sealed. The joints of the canvases are glued together, and the junctions are glued with sealing paste.

HEAT-REFLECTING VAPOR INSULATION

IN Lately spreadvapor barrier membranes, which also partially perform the functions of thermal insulation, with a special heat-reflecting layer. Vapor barrier metallized material is made on the basis of kraft paper with application aluminum foil. This material seems to be very effective in isolating baths and saunas. Its use allows, on the one hand, to prevent the penetration of water vapor into wall structure, and on the other hand, thanks to the aluminum coating with a reflectivity of more than 95%, significantly reduce heat loss through the walls.

FLAT ROOF VARIATION

Vapor barrier in flat roofs plays an extremely important role. The vapor barrier layer is a barrier to the penetration of moisture vapor from the warm space below into the thickness of the insulation. As a result, the thermal insulation remains dry, retaining all the declared thermal insulation properties. As a vapor barrier membrane in flat roofs, as a rule, a polyethylene film with a density of at least 180 g / m2 and a thickness of at least 200 μm is used. Special attention it is necessary to pay attention to the resistance of the film to ultraviolet radiation - ordinary polyethylene quickly loses its strength properties under the influence of sun rays, and it is not always possible to quickly close the vapor barrier film with insulation.

MARK DESCRIPTION

DELTA REFLEX

DELTA REFLEX PLUS

Energy-saving 4-layer vapor barrier film with a reflective coating for pitched and flat roofs. DELTA-REFLEX provides 100% reliability against the penetration of warm, moist air into building structure due to almost zero vapor permeability (Sd> 150 m). It has a record strength of 450 N/5 cm and at the same time high ductility.

DELTA-DAWI GP Single-layer polyethylene vapor barrier film for pitched and flat roofs. The very high Sd value of more than 100 m limits the diffusive transport of moisture from the inside to such an extent that even in winter (at the maximum differential partial pressure indoor and outdoor air), the formation of condensation moisture is excluded. The film DELTA-DAWI GP is transparent with a slight yellow tint, which makes it possible to carry out visual control of the quality of insulation laying, therefore, it allows to increase the reliability and quality of insulation work.

DELTA-LUXX Film with limited vapor permeability for pitched roofs. The DELTA-LUXX film located on the side of the room prevents the convective penetration of vaporous moisture into the insulation and the roof structure. However, DELTA-LUXX, due to its limited diffusion capacity (equivalent diffusion thickness Sd = 2 m), makes it possible to evenly remove from the premises excess moisture without the risk of condensation in the roof structure. Moreover, the DELTA-LUXX membrane allows you to dry the insulation and the truss system in the summer, when the humidity in the room can be much lower than the humidity outside. As a rule, such films are used in the construction of energy-saving houses or houses with a variable moisture formation cycle (cottages, summer cottages). Can be used in homes permanent residence, but in rooms with a normal microclimate (bedrooms, living rooms, officesand children's rooms).

DELTA-Sd-FLEXX Vapor barrier for repairing attics from the outside. With variable vapor permeability. Passes moisture through itself, preventing its accumulation in the roof structure. Reliably protects interior decoration during the repair work. Used to perform overhaul roofs with the removal of roofing, insulation and old insulating films. The complexity of such work lies in the fact that they have to be carried out from the outside of the building. At the same time, it is very important to prevent atmospheric moisture from entering the room with its expensive finish. The film has variable resistance diffusion: in a dry state 5 m, with moisture 0.2 m. In a dry state, the film prevents the convective and diffusive movement of water vapor from the room to the roof structure. But as soon as there is an increase in humidity, the film ceases to work as a vapor barrier, freely removing excess moisture to the outside.
